2 Sam Jamison Middle School Invention Convention Dear Parent/Guardian: We are extremely excited this year to be able to offer our 6 th grade students the opportunity to experience an Invention Convention! All students are required to create an invention for their science class and then volunteer to enter it into the Convention. (It is mandatory for Advanced classes to enter the project) Have you ever wanted to improve the normal everyday products or tools that you use for housework or jobs? Have you ever wanted to make something better? That is what your child is going to try to do: through the process of coming up with a better method or product, they will experience the creativity that it takes to build their own invention. The inventions themselves and the development will be completed at home once they have been approved by their science teacher. Inventions will be done independently (no groups or partners) by the student. Parents, we know that you want to pitch in and help, but we ask that you please supervise, offer moral support, and help with the round up of materials and supplies, only. Your student needs the experience of completing an invention on their own. Below, you will find the dates that the inventions will be due. Please assist your child by bringing the board/invention to school on the assigned dates. Grading of the inventions WILL NOT be affected by participation in the Convention. Please read the attached packet very carefully noting the timeline, presentation requirements, and rules for the Convention. Inventions are due on the following dates. Final Invention and board Due: April 25 th - 29 th Teachers will be grading the projects the next week. Before they are entered in the Convention. May 21st 26 th Judging of projects entered in Convention (tentative) Parent Night : May 26th 6:30-7:30 Please sign and return one copy of this letter indicating that you have received, read, and understand the information in the packet. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child s Science teacher immediately. We truly are excited to be doing an Invention Convention. 3 Basic Rules of the Invention Convention NAME LOCATION: NOT ON THE FRONT. IT SHOULD BE ON THE BACK OF THE BOARD IN THE MIDDLE CENTER **** If a name is on the front, the board WILL NOT be entered into the Invention Convention and points will be taken off for the grade in class. Size of display Maximum 48 inches wide, 48 inches high, 30 inches deep. The board must stand on its own if it is entered into the Convention.. Actual project/invention size cannot be larger than the display board Organisms no living creatures, including animals and microorganisms can be displayed. No type of cultured growth, spoiled food or molds can be displayed. Tissue no human or animal tissues can be displayed. Teeth, hair, nails, dried animal bones, histological sections and mounted slides are allowed. Specimen no taxidermy parts, preserved animals, embryos, or dried plant material can be displayed. Photographs no pictures of any person should be displayed on the board including you no visual presentations of surgical techniques, dissections, necropsies or other lab techniques depicting vertebrae animals or humans in other than everyday conditions can be displayed Solid waste no solid waste, soil or other waste material may be displayed. Chemicals no chemicals of any kind, including water, can be displayed. Foodstuff no human or animal food can be displayed. Sharp items no syringes, needles, pipettes or other sharp instruments can be displayed. Dry ice dry ice or other solids that vaporize will not be displayed. Fire no open flames or highly combustible materials are allowed. Tanks tanks, full or empty, used for storage of combustible gases or liquids are not to be displayed. Machinery no unshielded belts, chains, pulleys or other hazardous moving parts shall be displayed. Lasers only class II lasers with proper warning labels displayed are allowed. Class III and IV are not allowed. Heat Source materials heated above 100 degrees F are not allowed without adequate insulation. Electric Current no unshielded high voltage equipment, large vacuum tubes, ray-generating devices, bare wires and knife switches carrying at more than 12V or exposed sparks will be allowed. Embellishments - awards, medals, business cards personal information and photographs of people s faces are not allowed. Batteries no open cell batteries may be displayed.. No invention of weapons of any kind are allowed. Inventions that violate the above rules will not be considered for judging.

4 SUGGESTIONS AND WEBSITES TO HELP WITH IDEAS POSSIBLE IDEAS FOR INVENTIONS A device that cleans gutters A rain poncho designed for use when riding a bicycle A lunch-box alarm that goes off when an unauthorized person opens it A bird feeder that protects feed from the wind and rain A toothpaste cap that minimizes waste and mess A dog collar that lights up at night A bedspread that zips down the middle Safety suspenders that light up at night for joggers or bikers A newspaper launcher A new type of rake that allows you to pick up leaves without bending over A robot that distributes and collects student papers A glove with a light for signaling turns when riding a bike at night A drying rack for gloves New nightlight slippers New page holder so you don t have to hold the book while you read Sweeper house shoes- 2 in 1

5 BOARD LAYOUT GUIDELINES NAME LOCATION: NOT ON THE FRONT. IT SHOULD BE ON THE BACK OF THE BOARD IN THE MIDDLE **** If a name is on the front, the board WILL NOT be entered into the Invention Convention and points will be taken off for the grade in class. Purpose: What is the purpose of your invention? Example: to make a better mouse trap game Relevance: How it can be used in everyday life. Materials: List all the materials used in your invention. Include what, how much and what kinds of materials you used. Example of a good listing: 1 cage 1 basket 1 pulley system 2 ½ feet of rope 1 quart of water Components for the game Procedure: Your step-by-step directions are like a recipe include the quantity (amount) of each material used. Do NOT put the word I.. at the beginning of each step. You are writing the procedure as if someone will construct the invention after you. Explanation of Process: In paragraph form, clearly explain the process and any changes that were made to make your invention a success. This is similar to writing a journal as you re creating and testing your invention. Conclusion/Result: Clearly summarize the explanation process of your invention. Accurately explain the results of the invention and what changes had to be made to make the invention work. This should also be in paragraph form (3-5 sentences)

Remember we cannot read your minds!! requires extra effort/materials and we want to make sure that you have your parent s total support. You may either make changes to this idea or submit an entirely new idea. Make sure you keep your teacher informed of what you are doing. Remember it s not personal, it s business. Be diligent.
