1 Department of Humanities and Sciences (310) Winter 2013 Co-Occurring Disorders for Addictions Professionals Community Health Sciences X (formerly Public Health X 488.1) 4 Units Instructor: Ahndrea Weiner M.S., LMFT, LPCC Dates: January 7 March 25, 2014 Days/Time: Tuesday Evenings, 7:00pm-10:00pm Location: Westwood: UCLA Extension Lindbrook Center, Room 204 Course Description: Alcohol and drug symptoms often mimic psychiatric symptoms. The addictions professional must be familiar with the terminology and issues of the mental health field, in addition to knowledge of substance use disorders. This course focuses on co-occurring disorders, a condition that occurs when a psychiatric diagnosis is given alongside the primary diagnosis of substance abuse or substance dependence. Goals and Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Identify primary mental health disorders and substance abuse disorders independent of the other within a clinical setting 2. Identify the basic principles of integrated treatment for COD 3. Discover best practices that have effective in working with clients with COD 4. Discuss the DSM-5 and its use for those with a COD 5. Explain the process from evaluation and assessment of a client, through the application of their treatment plan. 1

You have the option of purchasing either: DSM-5* or, Desk Reference to the Diagnostic Criteria from DSM-5. *Please note that the DSM-5 will be more expensive but it is the official diagnostic manual that all mental health providers use in their daily practice. Web-Enhanced Course: This course will use a password-protected internet site on Blackboard to post course materials, announcements and grades. Course materials can include syllabus, hand-out and internet links referenced in class (no hard copies will be available in class). Instructor will post their contact information and course syllabus. Upon registration, you will be sent an with password and Blackboard log-on information. The you submitted with your registration will become the default for communications between you, your instructor and UCLA Extension Discussion forums on the course website can be used to interact with your fellow students. Participation in forums is optimal and the instructor will not be interacting on these forums. Grading: Course grades will be based on the following: Attendance 10 points In order to verify attendance, the instructor will refer to the roster at the beginning of every class. Each class you attend is worth 1 point. That means you can miss 2 classes and still be able to acquire 10 points Quizzes 40 points 4 quizzes; 10 points each. Each quiz will be given after the break. This will allow for students who are running late to be able to take the quiz. It s in your best interest to be in class the day of a quiz as each quiz is worth 10 points and there are no opportunities to make up quizzes. Final Paper 50 points Due week 10. It will be to your advantage to be present for class on February 18,(week 7) & February 25, (week 8). These 2 lectures will prepare you for and include the necessary components needed to create a comprehensive final paper. Total Points 100 points *Class participation will absolutely help your grade. Letter Grade % # Points A (90-100%) points B (80-89%) points C (70-79%) points D (60-69%) points F (<59%) 64 points and below All grades are final when filed by the instructor on the Final Grade Report. 3
