2 COURSE SYLLABUS CLST 105 STRATEGIES FOR THE APPLICATION OF COLLEGE LEARNING SKILLS COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides strategies that will enable students to apply college learning skills to their current courses. It incorporates one-on-one mentoring, as well as weekly accountability. It is designed to foster an awareness of current academic progress and to encourage the motivation and responsibility necessary for academic success. RATIONALE Some students need additional instruction in transitioning from the acquisition of study skills to the application of these skills in their coursework. This instruction will equip the student with the skills needed to achieve greater academic success. I. Microsoft Office MEASURABLE LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: A. Design a personalized study plan in order to implement it weekly. B. Demonstrate specific study skills by completing application-based assignments. C. Display an understanding of the relationship between his or her academic standing, goals, and career aspirations. D. 3 V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS A. Lecture presentations B. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. C. Discussion Board Forums (3) Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be at least 1 words (and 3 paragraphs) and demonstrate courserelated knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student will reply to the threads of at least 2 classmates. Each reply must be at least words (and 1 paragraph). D. Master Calendar The student will create a Master Calendar that contains what assignments (including tests, quizzes, papers, etc.) are due for the next 8 modules/weeks of all courses on his or her current academic schedule. E. Individual Conference 1. Sign Up The student will sign up for a time to meet with the instructor for an Individual Conference. This Individual Conference will occur at a later time in the course, by telephone. The student will submit confirmation of the scheduled day and time for this Individual Conference. 2. Individual Conference The student will submit specific information prior to meeting for the Individual Conference, and must be prepared to answer questions related to past, present, and future coursework. 3. Reflection F. Introduction Paper The student will submit a short paper reflecting upon the Individual Conference. The student will write a 1 2-page paper that answers a set of questions. The paper must be written in a Microsoft Word document with 12-point font and double spacing. G. Study Logs (6) The student will outline steps for successful completion of assignments from all courses on his or her current academic schedule. Each Study Log will include due dates, a detailed plan to complete each assignment, whether the goals were accomplished, and all grades for previous assignments. Page 2 of 4

Self-Assessments (6) For each Self-Assessment, the student will have 1 hour to answer 4 questions in sentence form identifying his or her strengths and weaknesses in regard to various course-related topics. Each Self-Assessment will be completed in quiz format. I. Reflection Paper The student will write a 1 2-page paper that answers a set of questions. Late Assignment Policy If the student is unable to complete an assignment on time, then he or she must contact the instructor immediately by . Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: 1. Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 10% deduction. 2. Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a 20% deduction. 3. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the course will not be accepted. 4. Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted.
