MacArthur entrance closed after Byron Nelson reopen Sept. 10. Linda will contact Chris Fulmer to do a Poster Session at Conference Day on the DART station. Retrofit project schedule Faculty Parking/Parking lot signage Retrofit schedule occupancy by early July Safety issue. Library gets a lot of students/faculty who cannot find their car. People need to be able to provide directions for visitors. Signage is badly needed not only for information purposes but for safety reasons as well. Example if a student or Page 1 of 5 John Watson check with Martha to determine faculty office needs during and after adaptive remodel. Need to formalize process for assigning permanent and temporary offices VPs, Deans and Faculty Association John Watson informed the group that there is a Parking Signage project in the planning stages. The committee has recommended use of native plant names that are related to

New Business: Our Students NLC plans for 2010 Core What can faculty do to help? John Hitt John Watson Closed circuit TVs are now active for the parking lots. This is an additional effort to address safety. Advising has been meeting with all of the HDEV classes to explain the 2010 CORE. Learning Frameworks Course the District has not resolved concerns over faculty credentials to teach the new course. Faculty Association officers can help identify faculty who would like to be trained on the CORE curriculum advising process and submit names to Mary Ciminelli. This would be a great way to provide students with expanded resources of people who can help them understand the new requirements. North Lake College will rely on VPs Hughes and Kelemen to assure SACS compliance for faculty teaching EDUC 1300 which is also cross-listed as PSYCH 1300 by the state. Faculty with EDUC or PSYCH credentials meet the credentialing requirements. NLC plans for HB 2504 Need an update on how NLC will be implementing the requirements to post faculty information on the web for public access. Page 2 of 5 NLC is working with the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs on implementing this requirement. Currently, there are discussions with other area community college districts to see whether others have solutions we can use. Tarrant County may have a software system that will work for us.
3 NLC plans for SACS Quality enhancement Plan how does this work,? When will we begin? Don't Drop campaign Mary Ciminelli On-going feedback on how faculty are doing with SLOs. We will need to demonstrate two cycles of review by the time of our reaffirmation. This will include online courses. All students who now show up on campus to drop a class must see an advisor. The QEP is a broad-based process. We will need input from faculty, students, and community constituents, etc. for potential topics for QEP. Candace and Linda will provide details once the timeline is established. Shirley Thompson & Ulanda Forbess reported that their goal is to have 24 classes reviewed by May 15 th using QM standards. This will help ensure faculty are prepared to show distance education courses are compliant. Faculty can expect to see more students as advisors then refer them back to the faculty member for possible resolution. Focus on Student Retention - To continue our focus on student retention, the college is working with the FranklinCovey organization on a concept called The Four Disciplines of Execution. A three-day training has been completed by about 40 college staff members who will be training others on how this works. This strategy requires us to identify a Wildly Important Goal and establish a plan to accomplish it. Page 3 of 5 North Lake College s Wildy Important Goal (WIG) is To reduce the number of W s from 3134 to 2758 by December 31, 2010 while maintaining academic standards for our students. (That is a 12% reduction in W s) The goal is subject to ratification by the teams who will be working to help us achieve the goal. Faculty Association officers were supportive of the idea of focusing on retention by reducing the number of Ws for any given term. They advised
4 the group that this goal provided a clear target for us to work on. How students go about making choices often affects retention. Ulanda discussed the Readi- Assessment tool which assesses typing skills, time management, money skills, and learning styles, similar to Myers-Briggs. Students can complete the assessment on-line and then it can be discussed with them. It s a useful tool that students and faculty can use for decision-making. Faculty Search Committees Status report there are 8 pending position openings that have been advertised. Our Community Speaker Series on Sustainability Dr. Glasscock discussed the NLC Sustainability Symposium tentatively set for April 14 th at NLC to convene the community around the topic of sustainability. This will be followed by a series of speakers throughout the coming year. Our Employees South Campus support How can faculty offer support to bring numbers up? frame. Need to be more strategic in scheduling and offerings. In keeping with Board policy, John Hitt has conferred with Linda Glasscock to give input to committee composition. Linda will also be touching base with the respective deans and VPs as the committees are finalized. Rene biggest issue is scheduling too many of the same classes during the same time Need signage on the building. There Page 4 of 5
5 are plans for an electronic Marquee Marketing of classes is essential and more attention needs to be given to this. ILC will need to do an analysis of the Fall semester in planning future course offerings. Posters What is the process for for poster approval? There are too many posters all over the place, making it look cluttered. When that happens, people tend not to read any of what is posted. What is the alternative? Mary Ciminelli indicated that Student Life manages this approval process. When items are posted, there is a specified time allowed. There probably needs to be a periodic clearing of items that are posted. Page 5 of 5
