Le but du projet est l'évaluation de la compétence des professionnels dans quatre domaines. L'Intercultool est un projet collaboratif de deux ans subventionné par l'union Européenne. Le but du projet est l'évaluation des compétences des professionaux du domaine des affaires, de public et á but non lucratif. Description: L'Intercultool est un projet collaboratif de deux ans (de novembre 2007 jusqu' á octobre 2009) subventionné par Le Programme d éducation et de formation tout au long de la vie, et entrepris par le partenariat de la France, la Hongrie, l Italie, le Pays Bas, la Suède et le Royaume Unis. Dans le contexte de dynamique interculturel présent dans des activités de la cooperation Européenne, et de la diversité ethnique et culturelle en augmentation, l importance de compétence interculturelle des individuels et des organisations est reconnu entre les compétences clés du cadre de Le programme "Education et Formation 2010". Le but du projet Intercultool est de contribuer au développement des skills et des compétences de professionaux dans la gestion des situations et des interactions influencés par la diversité culturelle dans leur domaines d activités (des affaires, de public, ou a but non lucratif) et aussi dans leur vie sociale. En outre, le projet aide la récognition et le développement de compétence interculturelle dans le domaine de l education et de la formation. The study summarizes the textual analysis with which the interviews were analysed. After analysing the main difficulties professionals faced in intercultural interactions, and the typical resources they used in those situations, the authors embedded the field research's results in the corpus of some selected theories of intercultural interaction (from selected scholars of intercultural psychology, among others, Ward, Cohen-Emerique, Van Oudenhoven and Gudykunst). As a synthesis between the fieldwork's results and 2

This model describes intercultural interactions in four main dimensions: emotions, behaviour, cognitive and identity. The four main dimensions are then broke down in 12 sub-categories. This model served as a basis for creating the assessing questions and cases of the Beta version of the Intercultool assessment tool. After the validation research, we simplified on the latent model behind the final (alpha) version of our assessment tool. **** R2: Intercultool assessment tool of intercultural competences Digital assessment tool adapted to assess the intercultural competence level and different training needs of professionals facing intercultural situations; **** R3: 1200 tests of the assessment tool done with professionals The study documents the whole research and the process of the analysis of the data gained from the research. The cca. 900 validation tests were analysed with quantitative and qualitative analysis methods, with the methods of statistics. The statistic findings were then interpreted from the perspectives of intercultural psychology and cultural anthropology. The study also makes an attempt to do comparisons between the different national and professional groups, these comparisons however shall be treated carefully, since the research was not a representative comparative research. Nevertheless, these comparisons may articulate new questions to the researchers of intercultural competence and might be an interesting as points of departure for future researches. The end of the study contains some information about the transformation of the latent model used in the Beta version of the Intercultool. WP5_study_EN_pdf.pdf R4 (English version): "Policy-oriented recommendations for the integration of the Intercultool assessment methodology into VET institutions" (study) This policy paper in its first part analyses the current European environment of V.E.T. and the themes that are high on the European Commission's agenda. It also investigates how the Intercultool project and its result respond to the current European needs in terms of promoting lifelong learning. In the second part the paper takes one step down, going from the European to the national level, scrutinizing the environment of V.E.T. in the partner countries. In each case it examines how the Intercultool is in line with the different national V.E.T. systems. It enumerates the efforts that each partner has made to help the integration of the Intercultool into the practice of V.E.T. stakeholders (private and public schools, training organisations, public bodies and companies involved in vocational or further training of professionals). It also lists further steps that will be made in each country to help the dissemination and integration of the Intercultool at regional and national level. In several points, the paper gives ideas on how the Intercultool can be used in the daily practice of organisations dealing with vocational and further education or training. 8

The web page can be accessed from the while the assessment tool is available from a sub-domain of the same: Description: The web site is a standard communication media of the project. It informs about the aim and objectives of the project, there are/were continuously published news, as well as the newsletters of the project, which inform(ed) visitors about the current state of play of the project. It also contains all the products that have been born during the project: the studies, the research summaries and background materials that help visitors interested in the professional details of the project to understand the creation of the Intercultool assessment tool in depth. Through the web page, interested visitors could also subscribe to our newsletters. We received 92 subscriptions through this media. The Intercultool assessment tool's web page is fully available in 6 languages: English, Hungarian, Italian, Swedish, Dutch and French. These does not only contain the assessing questions but they contain all the necessary information (in all languages) to understand how the tool has been created and how it can be applied in the practice of V.E.T. stakeholders. Description: The system allows real-time communication among project partners, publishing files and commenting them, etc. It is a good tool that provides great possibilities for people who work on the same project to work more efficient. It also connects the coordinators of several European Projects who are registered in the system. The users subscribed for different projects can share information with each other, thus creating a good synergy between different EU-funded projects and organisations. We need to adapt to all kinds of special situations arising from the different cultural backgrounds of the various participating actors. We also need to find a way to benefit from the advantages of this cultural diversity, ease tensions and resolve potential conflicts. To acquire particular competences in order to address the somewhat contradictory challenges of a multicultural environment, we need to know how to develop these competences and whether we are ready to face and handle the difficulties. The Intercultool Competence Assessment Tool aims to support professionals in developing these competences. Description: Living in an every time more competitive world, in the age of Life Long Learning, self study and distance learning became crucial. The key to understand multicultural situations and resolve potential conflicts is self assessment and development. The assessment tool helps to become conscious of our values and convictions, discover our own cultural references and think about our own reactions and thus: make conscious our unconscious worldview understand our acts and thoughts and their cultural motives become more open and receptive towards others and ourselves be more effective in culturally diverse situations minimize the stress when facing differences. This self-discovery can be effectively helped by the use of Intercultool, the online assessment tool of intercultural competence. Intercultool however can not only be used for the purpose of self-study. The tool can be ideally used to tailor formal or non-formal training courses to the needs of particpants. It can be also used in a mediated situation (e.g. personal coaching), as a basis of talking about intercultural strengths and weaknesses. The tool consists of four major parts: the demographic questions, which help any group analysis; the cases; the direct questions and finally the feedback part, which is based on the automated analysis of test results. The tool can be accessed for registered users. The second transnational meeting was followed by a work group meeting of the Working Group 3 and 5. Based on these discussions we clarified the tasks of Work Package 3 and set up a timetable that was accepted by the partners. The partners involved in Working Group 5 also discussed some pending questions and based on this discussion they updated their work plan of Work Package 5.
