5 DIVERSITY DISTINCTIONS Diversity is a vital component of any university. Exposure to a broad range of perspectives, views and outlooks is key to fostering both breadth and depth in intellectual discovery and furthering research. Brown University is founded on the ideals of academic inclusiveness and the benefits of a liberal education. These principles are held strongly at the School of Engineering, where this philosophy has developed into a culture of multidisciplinarity that crosses many intellectual boundaries. The School of Engineering s success through creative and collaborative approaches are a testament to the benefits of inclusion and working with a variety of diverse perspectives. Admissions History: Percentage of Underrepresented Minorities The Solids Mechanics graduate program was ranked No. 2 in the country by PhDs.org. Brown ranks No. 7 on Forbes list of America s Most Entrepreneurial Universities. A Brown team has won the RI Business Plan Competition for six consecutive years, including this year s winner, Dual Server Cooling, which was a team of PRIME students. The team that created BrainGate brain-computer interface won a major international award, the $1-million Moshe Mirilashvili Memorial Fund B.R.A.I.N. Prize. EQUiSat, a nanosatellite being built by a team of Brown students, is among 16 small satellites selected by NASA to fly on rockets to be launched over the next three years. The Brown/RISD Techstyle Haus was one of only two entries selected from the United States in the 2014 Solar Decathlon Europe. The team finished in the top ten in several categories in the international competition. Active Student Groups National Society of Black Engineers Society of Women Engineers Women in Science and Engineering SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING MISSION STATEMENT Brown University s School of Engineering educates future leaders in the fundamentals of engineering in an environment of world-class research. We stress an interdisciplinary approach and a broad understanding of underlying global issues. Collaborations across the campus and beyond strengthen our development of technological advances that address challenges of vital importance to us all.
