6 KU HAS BEEN SELECTED FOR TOP GLOBAL UNIVERSITY PROJECT BY JAPANESE GOVERNMENT On September 26, 2014, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) selected 37 universities for the TOP GLOBAL UNIVERSITY PROJECT including KU. It means KU has been officially recognized as one of the leaders in the internationalization of Japanese universities. KU will receive intensive support from the Japanese government for the next 10 years. 6

7 KU CELEBRATED OUR 150-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF ITS FOUNDATION IN 2012 The Forth Higher School Ishikawa Normal High School Kanazawa Medical College ~ Celebrating 150 Years of Tradition and Excellence ~ KU has its origins in the Kaga clan s Hikoso Vaccination Center, which was established in It is the third oldest national university and the leading institution of higher education in the Hokuriku Region. KU celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2012, and is starting the next 150 years as the stronghold of intelligence in East Asia. 7

8 MOST ADVANCED RESEARCH AND GLOBAL EXPANSION KU is advancing research for the future development of bioscience through the world s fastest atomic force microscope (AFM) which makes possible the direct imaging of nanostructure in biomolecules. Also, we are advancing research on modeling human cancers and analyses on cancer stem cell biology / tumor microenvironment, cancer biology research by modeling tumors and molecular-targeting drug development. Moreover, the university is conducting advanced research on innovative brain science to clarify the human mind and nerve activity, research to solve environmental problems such as the survey of atmospheric data around the Sea of Japan, research on formulation of scientific base to collect samples of mantle materials by super-deep ocean drilling, and research to overcome lifestyle-related diseases through the use of world s largest systematic database of human-liver gene information and protein information. 12 SPECIAL PROGRAMS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Short-term to 1-year programs INTENSIVE JAPANESE LANGUAGE PROGRAM a 6-month intensive course for the graduate students to provide them with the Japanese they require for their research in Japan JAPANESE LANGUAGE & CULTURE PROGRAM a 1-year program taught in Japanese, designed to improve the language fluency as well as deepen the understanding of Japanese society and culture INTEGRATED JAPANESE LANGUAGE PROGRAM a Japanese language course to allow students taking the supplementary Japanese classes to gain sufficient fluency to be able to understand lectures in Japanese 12

14 ENRICHED INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS DOUBLE-DEGREE and TWINNING PROGRAMS There are Double-Degree Programs which students may earn master s or doctoral degree from both KU and partner university. Also, there are Twinning Programs with partner university through which students may study the last 2 years of undergraduate program at KU and receive the Bachelor s degree. EXPERIENCES IN JAPANESE CULTURE AND SOCIETY PROGRAMS In a short-term study program, Experiences in Japanese Culture and Society, students can learn about traditional Japanese culture, which still remains very alive in Kanazawa and Ishikawa. At the same time, the courses present Japanese culture in its contemporary form. CULTURAL RESOURCE MANAGER TRAINING PROGRAM This is 5-year Integrated Special Program selected as Program for Leading Graduate Schools by Japanese government, which aims to train "Cultural Resource Managers, the professionals who consider tangible and intangible diverse cultural heritages of the humankind as shared resources to the future society, who can find an effective plan for preservation, succession and utilization and who take part in their management and operation. 14

This support covers wide areas, including the initial registration procedures in starting at Kanazawa University.
