4 ALLAMA IQBAL OPEN UNIVERSITY The Allama Iqbal Open University (with its main campus in Islamabad) was established in 1974 under an Act of parliament. It was the second open university of the world and the first of its kind in Asia and Africa when it was established. Now more than 60 such universities are providing distance education and it is among the 4 top mega universities of the world. The aim of establishing AIOU was to provide affordable and accessible education through distance learning at the door-steps to those people, who could not continue their studies through formal system of education. The University (AIOU) operates on semester system and admits students in Autumn and Spring semesters. Under-graduate admissions are offered in both the semesters whereas post-graduates courses are offered once a year. The enrolled students are given course books, audio video cassettes specially prepared by the university on self instructional principles. However, at the postgraduate level reprints of foreign books allied with study guides help students to polish their skills. At present, the AIOU is offering programs from matric to Ph.D. level in diverse disciplines included in the four faculties. The University has established study centres across the country, where distance education students are provided necessary guidance by their respective tutors. Moreover, the university has established full time study centres, wherein the students of MBA (IT), MBA (Banking and finance, BS (CS), B.E (Engineering) and MS. are being provided instruction, guidance and counseling through face-to-face education. AIOU is offering 4-year under- graduate degrees. In some courses teaching is provided through radio, TV programmes. Apart from curricular and extra-curricular activities during the academic year, the AIOU and its regional centres actively participate in the co-curricular activities by arranging educational and literary seminars, workshops and conferences, attended not only by the students and faculties of the university but also by renowned dignitaries and scholars. For the science students and research scholars, a science complex has been built where they use the latest equipment of international standard. To meet the present day challenges internet facility is also available in the student s hostel and the central library, where computers have been provided to enable students to access latest information available through open source databases. FACULTY OF SCIENCES The Faculty of Sciences at AIOU has recently undergone a major upgradation in its conceptual framework, courses/programmes offering, mode of education and establishment of departments. The Faculty of Sciences was first established in 1982 with only five departments and limited number of undergraduates and basic functional courses. Over last three to four years, four new departments and a range of higher degree programmes have been added to the portfolio of Faculty of Sciences. Most of the departments in the Faculty are engaged in the development and offering of highly technical, scientific and professional programmes. For example, post graduate programmes of Physics, Chemistry, Community Health and Nutrition, Environmental Design, Dietetics, Computer Sciences, Live stock Management, M.Sc (Hons) Agricultural Extension, 1
5 Forestry Extension, Rural Development and Mathematics have been successfully launched. It is in consonance with the overall government's policy of upgrading and strengthening higher education and research in the country. The practical work is an essential component in the teaching of science subjects. In some cases, the university has to acquire laboratories of other institutions to meet this requirement. Now the university is establishing its own laboratories at the main campus to fulfill the requirement of practical work in the science disciplines. In order to cater the research component of M.Phil/Ph.D programmes of the faculty of sciences, the construction of research complex with an investment of more than Rs.300 million has been completed at the AIOU main campus. The faculty also aims at ensuring the relevance of these programmes/courses to the needs of the real world by involving distinguished scientists, practitioners, institutions, academics and researchers from both public and private sector. In view of the present government's policy of developing the field of Science and Technology in the country, AIOU has made the development of science department on its top priority. A lot has already been done in this regard. During last two years, essential funds were given to different science departments to establish laboratories. The graduate programmes are also highly professional and in accordance with social and global demand. The list includes bachelor's degrees in Telecommunications, Automobile Engineering, Vision Sciences and Computer Sciences. Owing to the practical nature of these programmes, special arrangements are made for setting up study centers in automobile workshops, hospitals, computer centers, and other technical/scientific laboratories. Further, students are given an opportunity to avail work experience in reputed institutions. A comprehensive four years BS programme in Chemistry, Microbiology, Physics, Mathematics and Environmental Science in-accordance with the HEC guidelines has been developed. The laboratories for catering practical component are being furnished. In the very near future BS programmes will be launched. To fill the gap between secondary and graduate studies the faculty has also launched four F.Sc (HSSC) programmes in Pre- Medical, Pre-Engineering, and Family & Community Health & Home Economics. Research is an integral part of all the postgraduate programs. Studying for the research component offers an exciting prospects of working at the frontier of knowledge under the supervision/ guidance of an expert in the relevant field of study. Extensive research based M. Phil/ PhD Food & Nutrition, MS leading to PhD Computer Science, M.Phil Statistics and PhD Agriculture programmes have been launched. Attracting high caliber academics has been another very significant factor in shaping the faculty and securing good quality educational programmes. The course/programme enrollment is consistent and constently increasing in most cases. The future aims at filling gaps, consolidating overall national education policies and promoting diversified research culture in most scientific fields. DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE The Department of Computer Science is established Department in the Faculty of Sciences. The Department has received recognition nationwide in very short span of time as the large number of Computer Science students are currently enrolled in different academic programs. The students are divided into different groups. Each group consists of 20 students (Approximately). The groups, timings and days for the tutorial sessions, study centers and the tutors allotted to the group cannot be changed. Instructional System Each module in the programme may include combination of the following learning activities: 1. The four skills are practiced under the tutorial system of distance education mode. 2. A work book and audio CD will be mailed to the students. 3. Assignments for continuous assessment are given to the students, the tutor gives feedback on the assignments 4. A workshop reinforces what the students have learned and will be held at the regional campuses. Learning a foreign language is not an easy job especially when you are learning it alone. Lots of efforts are needed on the part of the student. But Vouloir c est Pouvoir (Where there is a will there is a way). So you have to plan your schedule right from the beginning. Make sure that you spend enough time on internet to learn the lessons. Before starting your study period you will receive your password and the schedule for fortnightly tutorial sessions. There are 8 modules and 8 tutorial sessions (apart from the introductory session). When you get your password, you will be able to have access to the lessons available on the internet. Now you have two weeks to prepare one lesson. Before coming to your next class or tutorial meeting, make sure that you learn the lesson well. You have to come to the class well prepared because your tutor is not going to teach you but he/she will help you utilizing what ever you have learnt. But if you have some particular problem regarding pronunciation, grammar etc. you can definitely ask your tutor. Study Material The students will be given a package containing the study materials like: 1. Modules available on the internet. Each module is composed of dialogues, multiple choice questions; fill in the blanks, listening and questions/answers. 2. Student workbook + an audio CD Normally for the Spring Semester this material should reach a student by the end of May and by the end of November for the Autumn Semester. 16
