17 Mechanical Engineering Degree Programs - PhD Courses: Set by research advisor & Committee Minimum: 40 graduate coursework credits for direct admission from BS & 18 credits with MS degree 3-5 years Research: 24 credit hours required Qualifying Exam: Pass within 15 months, 2 tries allowed for all grad students on undergraduate background Comprehensive Exam: After coursework completion.by committee (written document and presentation) Dissertation Defense The dissertation is an archival document containing original and significant work, approved by PhD committee upon successful completion of public defense
18 Application and Funding Timing Applications are accepted for: Fall Semester (August 15 start): Deadline is December 15 of previous year The primary admission semester where most of the teaching assistantship funding is given Spring Semester (January 1 start): Deadline is September 15 of previous year Very few assistantships (if any) are given
19 Application and Funding Selection and Funding Approx. 600 applications are received for fall admission Typically 40 teaching assistantship (TA) offers are made on competitive basis (<10%) at 50% acceptance Most of the offers are for PhD applications (and few for high-quality MS students intending to continue for PhD) TA Funding covers the first-year of study while students identify a research advisor Subsequent years are funded by research assistantship (RA) from the advisor s research grants
20 Application and Funding Application Elements Transcripts: School and GPA TOEFL Score: University requirement (must meet) Minimum score is 80 with no sub-score less than 19 and with writing sub-score no less than GRE (Graduate Record Examination) Score: we typically only look at Quantitative section score of approximately 165 and higher (scores for Analytical and Verbal sections could be affected by language barrier) - Letters of Recommendation: Three (3) Personal and Academic Statement: Helpful to assess student s motivation, ability to overcome difficulties, maturity, etc. CV: Useful to tell about special experiences that the student has, any publications, etc.
