1 Grover School of Engineering CCNY Chemical Engineering MS Program Frequently Asked Questions What makes the Department of Chemical Engineering at CCNY different from other programs? The Department of Chemical Engineering at The City College of New York is an intimate community. Our faculty ratio to students is 1:3. The City College of New York is one of 14 senior colleges that comprise the City University of New York. It is located on the upper west side of Manhattan, a diversified community. The Towers, our first residence hall, provides accommodations for our students. Our program is highly competitive. In addition, there is the Energy Institute, which is concerned with global warming and energy supply shortages, and the Benjamin Levich Institute for Physico-Chemical Hydrodynamics with research projects including rheology and non-newtonian, granular flows. There is funding for our students from the Center for Exploitation of Nanostructures in Sensors and Energy Systems (CENSES) and PREM (Partnership in Research and Education in Materials). Admission Requirements For admission to the program, students must have a baccalaureate degree. Applications for admission are done online through the CCNY Graduate Admissions Office. You can apply at What are the admissions requirements? Students must have two letters of reference, a well-written personal statement (of at least one full typed page), and a minimum GPA of 2.7 in order to be accepted into the ChE ME program (this corresponds to "first class with distinction" where applicable). Foreign students must have a TOEFL score of 550 or more for serious consideration. We encourage prospective students to submit their GRE scores (verbal: 400 or above, quantitative: 700 or above). GRE is particular useful for foreign students when the GPA equivalency is uncertain.

2 What is the deadline date? The deadline date for the Fall is November 15st and for the Spring is May 1st. Do I qualify for financial aid or federal student loans? Please direct questions concerning financial aid to the financial aid office (phone: ).. US citizens and permanent residents may qualify for financial aid if they have not used aid during their undergraduate studies.. Federal student loans may be available to citizens and residents provided they are full time students. What undergraduate courses do I need to take if my undergraduate discipline is different from Chemical Engineering (ChE)? First, each student should discuss with Masters Advisors (Prof. Tardos). You have to bring your undergraduate transcript with you when you talk to the advisor. Normally, any student from science disciplines takes ChE (Transport Phenomena-I), ChE (Transport Phenomena-II), ChE (Thermodynamics II), ChE (Reaction Engineering). If you did not take math requirements for ChE such as Math 391 or Math 392, you need to take before you take these undergraduate classes. The undergraduate classes that you take during the master study will not be counted for your graduation credits. There could be many holes for students from other disciplines than sciences. Thus, please contact the Masters Advisor. How many credits do you need to complete the ChE masters degree? 30 credits of graduate classes are required to finish your master study. To obtain your diploma, you need to maintain at least B (3.0). Most of students ended up in taking 31 credits because one credit Seminar class (ChE I0000) is required. What are required graduate classes? Introduction to Engineering Analysis (ENGR I-1100), Advanced Thermodynamics (ChE I-2800), Advanced Reaction Kinetics (ChE I-3300), Foundation of Fluid Mechanics (ENGR I-0800), Mass Transfer (ChE I-9100) or Heat Transfer (ME I-3700), Seminar (ChE I-0000), one of research classes out of graduate report (ChE I-9700, 0 credit),

3 Master s Project (ChE I-9800, 3 credits), and Master Thesis Research (ChE I-9900, 6 credits). The required classes are offered once in a year except for ENGR I-1100, seminar, and research classes. Thus, please take the required class as soon as possible. To choose one of the research classes, each student should contact the ChE faculty and decide the research topic from mutual agreement. What are technical electives available? There are many courses derived from our Departmental Research Activities. If your undergraduate degree is not in engineering, there would be several undergraduate engineering courses that you would likely have to take before you could take graduate biomedical engineering courses (see the website for details). Can students take classes outside of CCNY? Yes, with departmental approval

4 What is the attendance policy? A residency of at least two semesters or 21 credits, whichever is more is required. For international students, how is a student visa obtained? If you are accepted into the program, you will receive all the necessary directions on how to obtain a student visa. The CCNY Office of International Studies provides advice and assistance to students coming from outside the United States. What if my application is not complete by the deadline given? Your application should have your form, transcripts and reference letters. The GRE scores can be added after your application is submitted. I am having a problem with the online application process what do I do? If you have any problems with the online application process, please contact the CCNY Graduate Admissions Office (the CCNY website lists the contact information)... Do you accept application fee waivers? City University of New York policy does not accept waivers. Is campus housing available? Yes. The Towers, our first residence hall, provides accommodations for our students. We do currently not provide funding for incoming MS students. However, student that have shown strong track record and participate on a research project during their masters project or thesis often receive funding from their mentor or the department. Strong candidates that continue their studies by entering the Ph.D. Programs do receive funding from their Ph.D. advisor.
