INSPIRING INNOVATION I INNOVANTE PAR TRADITION CMP Center of Microelectronics in Provence - Georges Charpak Campus A dynamic link between research and industry
THE CENTER OF MICROELECTRONICS IN PROVENCE (CMP), The CMP is a Research and Education center of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint Etienne (ENSM-SE), located in Gardanne (medium size city between Aix-en-Provence and Marseilles) and hosted since 2008 by the brand new Georges Charpak Campus ( m 2 ). Health, a major economic sector in Rhône-Alpes area: direct jobs et students. The CMP was created in 2003 at the heart of a major French microelectronics cluster (known as the cradle of smart card industry) which gathers leading manufacturers and designers of microelectronic devices and systems. From the beginning, the CMP has adopted a policy of strong partnerships with the smartcard industry, including large companies such as STMicroelectronics and Gemalto, as well as several innovative SMEs. Research is organized in four departments (including a joint team with CEA-Leti) covering domains of semiconductor manufacturing and logistics, digital security, flexible electronics, as well as emerging fields of bioelectronics and printed electronics. The PACA (Provence-Alpes-Côte d Azur) region holds a significant academic and industrial potential in ICTs mainly concentrated in two areas: Aix-Marseille (integrated device manufacturing and smart cards) and Nice-Sophia Antipolis (telecommunications and design). For instance, It accounts for about 40% of the French yearly production in semiconductor devices and for approx employments. Founded in 2005, the competitiveness cluster SCS (Secured Communicating Solutions) coordinates the entire value chain of ICT trades, ranging from silicon to applications & uses. Contact : [email protected] The CMP is a board member of :

TECHNOLOGY FACILITIES Clean room facilities : 700m2 Microfabrication (class 100/1,000) Inkjet printing platform (class 1,000) Characterization (class 10,000) Micropackaging prototyping line (class 10,000) Collaborative R&D platform: Micro-PackS Micro-PackS is the first R&D structure in the country bringing together public laboratories and private companies in order to stimulate innovation in the frame of the competitiveness cluster Secured Communication Solutions. The main mission of Micro- PackS is to support and boost collaborative projects in the field of packaging and integration of smart devices and micro-systems, including hardware security concerns, by providing state-of-the-art resources to their members and customers. Since 2005, Micro-PackS is an association of large corporations, small and mid-sized businesses, start-ups and academic partners (currently, 12 members) sharing operating costs with the support of the French Ministry of Industry and local authorities. Micro-PackS spreads its activities over 700 m 2 of clean room space with the support of a collaborative team of 14 people. Bioelectronics labs A full suite of laboratories that permit the integration of living cells and biomaterials (proteins, nucleotides, sugars) with electronic devices and their subsequent characterization is present in the Department of Bioelectronics. It includes a biology laboratory, equipped for molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, and cell culture, and integration laboratories equipped for electrophysiology (patch clamp, microelectrode arrays), electrical and electrochemical characterization, fluorescence imaging and video-microscopy. Digital Security labs ENSM-SE and CEA-LETI have created a laboratory dedicated to the characterization of the security of integrated circuits. The equipment of the laboratory allows preparation of the circuit to be tested, to perform fault injection attacks (electrical glitches, lasers) and side channel attacks: differential power analysis (DPA) and electromagnetic analysis (EMA). Dedicated software tools are also under development to extract sensitive information from these experimental results.
RESEARCH DEPARTMENTS Tactical planning and operational management of automated material handling in a semiconductor manufacturing facility Manufacturing sciences & logistics department (SFL) The SFL Department develops research activities in two main areas: Manufacturing sciences and logistics for microelectronics and Microelectronics for manufacturing and logistics. The first area is mostly concerned with Semiconductor Manufacturing and is interested in Advanced Process Control and modeling and optimization at various decision levels. The second area studies the impact of communicating solutions in logistics processes, in particular in supply chains, healthcare, helicopter maintenance and city and multimodal logistics. The department currently consists of about 25 members (7 faculty, 5 postdocs, 3 engineers and 10 PhD students), and regularly welcomes visiting scientists. Conducting polymer electrodes for electrocorticography Bioelectronics department (BEL) The BEL Department was created in 2009 to support the convergence of information and communication technologies with the world of health. It combines expertise in organic electronics and biology. Its research aims to elucidate the fundamentals of the electronic materials/biology interface, with a view to launching new bioelectronics technologies. Its research axes are (1) novel devices for neural interfacing, (2) biosensors for medical diagnostics, toxicology and drug discovery, and, (3) cell adhesion devices. It collaborates closely with leading academic teams across the world, and with several biotechnology/biomedical start-up companies. RFID in healthcare logistics Cell monolayer for use in in vitro diagnostics
RESEARCH DEPARTMENTS Electro-Magnetic Analysis (EMA) of secure chip. Siver-based printed interconnects Digital hardware security department (SAS) The SAS Department, a joint R&D team between ENSM-SE and CEA-LETI, conducts applied research on design and testing of secure integrated circuits (such as smart cards or trusted platform modules). The department has acquired strong practical and theoretical expertise on the threats (also called «attacks») that put at risk these circuits. The research aims to understand and model the complex physical phenomena which enable such attacks. Those models are thus integrated in ad hoc CAD tools which enable the application of «secure by design» methods. The department currently consists of approx. 26 members (10 faculty, 1 postdoc, 7 engineers and 8 PhD students). Flexible electronics department The Flexible Electronics Department conducts applied research in the fields of printed electronics and heterogeneous integration on flexible substrates. It has expertise in two domains: i) ink jet printing (material, process and devices), ii) mechanics and reliability of flexible assemblies. The department currently consists of approx. 25 persons including 4 Full Professors, 2 Assistant-Professors and 8 PhD students. The PS2 department is involved, with industrial partners, in many research projects covering 3D integration (System In Package), smart flexible devices, and printed solar cells. 8 INSPIRING INNOVATION I INNOVANTE PAR TRADITION A partner on several levels The École Nationale Supérieure des Mines of Saint-Étienne (ENSM.SE) is a Graduate School of Executive Engineering and Applied Science in the tradition of the French Grandes Écoles, dedicated to the education of engineers and to industrial-oriented research of the highest caliber. Its mission: to support the development of its students and businesses through a range of courses and research topics, from the initial broad-based education of engineers to applied and fundamental doctoral research. The school s expertise is based on formal academic education with a bridge to the realities of the business world, supported by innovative teaching methods. Its pioneering spirit in the exploration of new scientific fields and its international partnerships have lifted it into the top 10 French engineering schools. The École Nationale Supérieure des Mines of Saint-Étienne has established its fourth and fifth research centers, one devoted to microelectronics and the other forged out of a new alliance between engineering and health. These two new centers are harvesting the synergies between research and industry, demonstrating the school s vision, recepti-veness to its customers needs, and recognition of the role it has to play in today s world.
