3 Special Projects 8/2005: Completed a four year project called Strengthening New Mexico Families Community Health Nursing Project, for which I wrote the grant application and provided project coordination. Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Local Initiative Funding Partners Program and local funders, the Daniels Fund, McCune Charitable Fund and the New Cycle Foundation. 5/2003 to present: Developed and implemented an early childhood parenting curriculum addressing racial disparities in education and health outcomes, and how parents can be proactive in furthering the success of their children in systems that may or may not be supportive of their goals. The FLECHA (Family Leadership for Education, Culture and Health Care Access ) curriculum was piloted in six diverse New Mexico communities, and after provision of a train the trainer curriculum and training, there are trainers in the six communities utilizing this parent empowerment tool. A state-wide parent advocacy group, Family Leadership Action Network (FLAN), was developed collaboratively with other organizations within this project, and the first joint Children s Cabinet meeting and FLAN parent s conference was held on November 5, In 2007, the FLECHA Curriculum was adopted to be utilized state-wide by Parents Reaching Out, a parent advocacy center and New Mexico s federally-funded Parent Information and Resource Center. In 2008, FLECHA received a grant from the Albuquerque Community Foundation to continue to support families attendance at the classes offered through the UNM Family Development Program and Parents Reaching Out.
