SALZBURG PRINCIPLES (2005) Original research is central to the doctorate Embedding in institutional policies and strategies Importance of diversity Doctoral candidates as early stage researchers Role of supervision and assessment Achieving critical mass 3-4 years duration Promotion of innovative structures Increasing mobility Ensuring appropriate funding
Increasing mobility: Doctoral programs should seek to offer geographical as well as interdisciplinary and intersectoral mobility and international collaboration within an integrated framework of cooperation between universities and other partners. 4

CLUES FOR SUCCES Internationalisation Internationalisation strategies should be a tool in increasing the quality in doctoral education and in developing institutional research capacity. Internationalisation at home (using the international profile of the home institution such as international doctoral candidates, staff, events and guest researchers), collaborative doctoral programmes (with individual mobility, such as cotutelle) international joint doctoral programmes (joint, integrated curricula, joint committees and juries, and the joint degree). Doctoral education should include the possibility for mobility experiences. 6
e s t r u c t u r a d a i n d i v i d u a l TYPES OF MOBILITY (LERU) Exchange mobility: Students themselves choose to have an experience abroad for a short or longer period of time, at a host institution, according to an individual mobility arrangement between the host and the home institution. The prototypical example here is mobility as funded by the Erasmus programme. Networked mobility and curricula: One university, a faculty, department or a specific university programme forms a network with several partners. The centre or demanding university sends its students for a certain period of time to one or more partner institutions, to follow(part of) their curriculum abroad. Embedded mobility and curricula: A limited number of partners (faculties, departments, programmes) engage in a consortium (e.g. ring-shaped ), in which students then rotate and follow parts of their educational trajectory subsequently in two or more partner institutions, while students of those partner institutions do the same. The curriculum is fully synchronised. 7

EDUB The Doctoral School of the University of Barcelona is committed to the promotion of the international dimension of its doctoral programs. As part of its policy of internationalization, the University of Barcelona has established networks with several prestigious universities, all committed to promote and support international cooperation and mobility of doctoral students, senior researchers and teachers. Among the wide range of types of cooperation, the most important are the joint PhD programs (Erasmus Mundus Marie Slodowska Curie actions), cotutelle agreements, or the international joint supervision. 9

CONCLUSIONS The goal of doctoral education is to cultivate the research mindset, to nurture flexibility of thought, creativity and intellectual autonomy through an original, concrete research project. It is the practice of research that creates this mindset. Doctoral research must take place in a research environment with doctoral candidates as fellow researchers; this demands that institutions base their strategies for doctoral education on their research capacity, critical mass, diversity, and ability to create inclusive environments that will make doctoral candidates active participants in the on-going research. 34
