Mansur Campus: Mission Statement Merritt The mission of Merritt College is to enhance the quality of life in the communities we serve by helping students to attain knowledge, master skills, and develop the appreciation, attitudes and values needed to succeed and participate responsibly in a democratic society and a global economy. The Associate Degree nursing program is designed to prepare the graduate to assume an entry level position as a registered nurse in hospitals other health care settings. Nursing is a profession in which a service is rendered to the community in collaboration with other professions to help individuals achieve and maintain homeostasis a state of dynamic health which allows clients to function at their optimum level of physical, emotional and social well-being. The client is defined as the patient and his/her family (or significant others) who have health care needs. The role and position of the nurse is complex and dynamic. This role results from advanced technology and increased knowledge in the behavioral, natural and applied sciences, with resultant social changes in health values and practices. Nursing care focuses on a holistic approach in the total care of the individual in his/her environment. Nursing care facilities provide a forum for adaptation for health teaching, prevention of illness, maintenance of wellness, restoration and rehabilitation toward independence and self-sufficiency. 1

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Employment Projections program Employment of registered nurses is expected to grow 26 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. Growth will occur primarily because of technological advancements, permitting a greater number of health problems to be treated; an increased emphasis on preventive care; and the large, aging baby boomer population who will demand more healthcare services as they live longer and more active lives than previous generations. Faster than average growth is expected in traditional hospital settings, as well as in non-hospital settings, such as physician s offices and home healthcare services. Growth is expected to be much faster than average in outpatient care centers, where patients do not stay overnight, such as those that provide same-day chemotherapy, rehabilitation, and surgery. Also, an increased number of procedures, as well as more sophisticated procedures once done only in hospitals, are being done in physicians' offices. The financial pressure on hospitals to discharge patients as soon as possible should mean more people admitted to extended and long-term 4

5 care facilities and more need for home healthcare. As the baby boomers grow older, there will be greater demand for home healthcare. In addition, because many older people want to be treated at home or in residential care facilities, registered nurses will be in demand in those settings. Job growth is also expected in facilities that provide long-term rehabilitation for stroke and head injury patients, as well as facilities that treat people with Alzheimer's disease (memory loss, dementia). Job Prospects Overall, job opportunities for registered nurses are expected to be excellent. Employers in some parts of the country and in some employment settings report difficulty in attracting and keeping enough registered nurses. Job opportunities should be excellent, even in hospitals, because of the relatively high turnover of hospital nurses. To attract and keep qualified nurses, hospitals may offer signing bonuses, family-friendly work schedules, or subsidized training. In physicians' offices and outpatient care centers, registered nurses may face greater competition for positions because these jobs generally offer regular working hours and provide more comfortable working conditions than hospitals. Generally, registered nurses with at least a bachelor s degree in nursing (BSN) will have better job prospects than those without one. In addition, all four advanced practice registered nurses clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetists, nurse-midwives, and nurse practitioners will be in high demand, 5

6 particularly in medically underserved areas such as inner cities and rural areas. We presently maintain our own website which gives a clear and definitive presentation of the ADN Program admissions requirements, applications process, curriculum, and NCLEX pass rates. There is also a general overview of the ADN through our Student Handbook. We provide a roadmap to illustrate the seamless matriculation process for our graduates to enter Cal State East Bay s BSN Program. Online learning has become an integral part of our nursing education and a win/win for faculty and students. Faculty are able to offer high quality coursework that incorporates modern technology and an abundance of resources by using Moodle, Peralta Colleges web-based teaching tool as well as hybrid classes. Students are able to have easy access to instructors, as well as build relationships through online communication with classmates. Instructors use MOODLE to post the course syllabus and calendar as well as integrate audio-visuals, PowerPoint presentations, quizzes, online resources, group discussions, SMART classrooms, critical thinking exercises; case studies, and group work to facilitate key concepts. Students utilize tablets and other electronic devices to support and enhance the learning process. One particular area of technology which has had a significant impact on increased preparation and higher scores on NCLEX is the Kaplan program. Kaplan a comprehensive review to prepare students for the NCLEX exam. It incorporates two key concepts: 1) A clinical judgment framework to help build the critical thinking skills needed for the test and beyond. 2) A systematic approach to answering application and analysis-level questions This grant supported resource is offered to our students as they graduate our program in preparation for the state NCLEX exam. 9

10 With our website and online learning tools the ADN Program has made a conscientious effort to be more eco-friendly and budget conscious by going paperless. We are leading the way for Going Green and being environmentallyfriendly on the Merritt College campus. IX. Consider curriculum, pedagogy/instructional, scheduling, and marketing strategies. Also, please reference any cross district collaboration with the same discipline at other Peralta colleges. Include overall plans/goals and specific action steps. 1. Provide the community with a continued supply of associate degree nurses to address the overall need in the state and our community. 2. Maintain the currency of the faculty be attending continuing education classes, department seminars and nursing workshops. 3. Continue to apply for grants to support retention by developing tutoring and mentoring programs to support expansion of the program. 4. Expand the internet links of the college s web site to include additional information about the program. 5. Continue plans for program expansion with additional classrooms in the new Science Building and hiring of faculty. 6. Develop online web-based classes. 7. Purchase state-of-the-art supplies and equipment. 8. Evaluate the feasibility of creating workshops or seminars to help our students transition into the program. 9. Recruit and hire one additional full time tenure track faculty member who meets the BRN requirements to teach pediatrics and/or another required content area and/or Simulation Laboratory. 10. Recruit and hire a qualified part time employee to help maintain the regular skills laboratory and simulation laboratory; to inventory, order and maintain instructional supplies and equipment and to assist faculty to set up the skills lab. 11. 12 XI. Needs Please describe and prioritize any faculty, classified, and student assistant needs. The full-time permanent position of a dedicated senior classified asistant. The full-time permanent position of faculty to replace the three (3) faculty that have been lost. Please describe and prioritize any equipment, material, and supply needs. A full-time clerical assistant dedicated to ADN is needed to assist with admissions, maintaining records, BRN correspondence and graduation petitioning.
