6 Introduction This Report explores the anticipated growth of industries, occupations, and staffing patterns within the service area of Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) from 2013 through NOVA s service area includes Arlington County, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Prince William County, Stafford County, Alexandria City, Fairfax City, Falls Church City, Manassas City, and Manassas Park City. Section 1 presents data for industries within the service area that are expected to grow and decline the most from. Industry growth and decline are determined by calculating the anticipated change in the number of jobs available from. Section 2 presents staffing pattern data for the specific high-growth industry that this particular Report focuses on. Staffing patterns refer to the occupations held by those working in the industry, and for the purposes of this Report, includes jobs which require at least a postsecondary non-degree award and at most a Bachelor s degree. For each occupation, a detailed synopsis is presented which includes a breakdown of jobs in the region by city/county, national educational attainment of employees, and related educational program completions in the region and at NOVA. Data were extracted utilizing the Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI) product EMSI Analyst, which compiles data from over 90 sources, including the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Internal Revenue Service. More information on EMSI can be found at A variety of terms and acronyms are used throughout this Report. Readers are encouraged to refer to the appendices at the conclusion of the Report for such explanations, as not all items are defined within the text. Appendix A includes general terms used in the text and tables. Appendix B provides explanations of NAICS codes and industries presented in this Report. Appendix C explains SOC codes and occupations and, finally, Appendix D provides details on CIP codes and programs of study. 1

7 Industries (NAICS ) DRAFT Section 1: Top Industries in NOVA s Service Area in 2013 and 2018 Using the program EMSI Analyst, data for the industries most prevalent in NOVA s service area were analyzed to determine where the most growth and declines are expected to occur from.
