1 ÉCOLE CHARLESWOOD SCHOOL GRADE 9 ELECTIVE COURSES ADVANCED TECH Welcome to the diverse field of Educational Technology! Technology will play a very important role in our lives as we move into a global community of Digital Learners. École Charleswood School reflects this and teaches technology to our students that will prepare them for a future that will require technological literacy. Below is a breakdown of the various themes and projects that will be completed: Computer Applications: Webpage Creation (Dreamweaver, Flash) Video Editing Morphing programs CD-DVD labeling Digital Photography CAD (3D Home Design) Animated GIF Creation Sound Technology 3D Animation Green Screening Videos Operating System installation Sound Editing on Computer Computer Hardware: Students will learn Computer component identification, upgrading computer components inside the box, and will design and construct their own Super Computer! Core Competencies : Core Comps are basic skills that the student MUST know. They are tasks that range from simple skills such as burning a CD to hooking up a Camcorder to a computer. There are about 200 Core Comps on a standardized list, which is checked off as the students complete their tasks. Due to the importance of these tasks, linking to other skill they will use in the future, we complete these early in the school year. Major Project: This will involve individual or group work, on an ongoing Multi-Media or relevant project, which will be worked on through the year. Work will be conducted independently of regularly scheduled classes. Completion of this assignment will be due in mid-may of the school year. This project will be worth 30% of the Term 3 mark. Students should start this project by the beginning of October. Other (time permitting): Exploring various problem solving activities, such as; SimQuake 2000, music creation on computer, audiovisual technology, film studies, Space Exploration (History and Future). ART The goal of the Art program is to allow students to develop their skills as artists. The Art program is based on a provincial curriculum which includes: drawing, painting, print making, sculpture, and clay. The Art program is intended to: 1. Develop visual, tactile, and auditory perception 2. Develop an understanding of the application of art fundamentals 3. Develop skills in the use of media and techniques 4. Promote aesthetic awareness of the historical and cultural environment through observations and analytical study 5. Provide a variety of art experiences so that art becomes one of the options for the individual s continuing exploration and enrichment in everyday life BASIC FRENCH (RECOMMENDED PRE-REQUISITE FOR GR. 10) Grade 9 Basic French is a multi-dimensional program aimed at developing the four language competencies: speaking (oral production) oral comprehension reading comprehension written production Classes make use of a variety of instructional strategies. Students integrate the four language skills as they study each thematic unit. Every unit includes: 1. A study of grammar and vocabulary 2. Interactive oral activities and presentations 3. Individual, pair and group work 4. Listening exercises and tests 5 a project 6. Exposure to French culture 7. Informal and formal evaluation

2 BAND (RECOMMENDED PRE-REQUISITE FOR GR. 10) The Grade 9 Band program at ECS is designed for students to further develop lifelong skills, knowledge and inspiration through instrumental music education. Essential Learning Areas Acquisition and development of skills required to read, play and interpret written music Development of instrument technique in order to produce a consistent characteristic tone quality Development of ensemble, rehearsal and performance skills Exploration of creativity, individuality and self-expression Success through cooperative learning, teamwork and leadership Understanding music in the context of time, place and community Students will have several performance opportunities throughout the school year including school concerts and participation in the Optimist Band Festival. The band experience provides an excellent opportunity for the development of a strong community of peers in a productive and positive learning environment. DRAMA The Drama Course will allow students to explore and create through the mediums of the Performance Art form in a more focused manner than the previous courses. This course will also look at the behind the scenes work more closely. Drama - Students will explore their own creativity through theatre games, exercises, script work, character development, improvisation and performances. Movement - Students will become more comfortable with their own bodies and with movement. They will also become more comfortable on stage and with stage direction. Backstage - Students will learn about and participate in the various backstage works involved with putting on a play. Group work is a necessity in this course. Students will be working with each other throughout the course. Students will be performing in front of their own class as well as larger audiences on a regular basis. EVOLUTIONS IN FITNESS Evolutions in Fitness This program is a school initiated coursed based on the importance of a healthy and balanced lifestyle. The focus of this course will center on the building blocks for maintaining a healthy body. Topics: - Workout programs - Human anatomy and basic physiology - Nutrition - Fitness Trends (P90x, Insanity, HITT) - Circuit training - Yoga - Guest Instructors This is a practical course involving primarily gym sessions. It will have a small classroom component. Students enrolling in this course should have a desire to improve their overall health and nutrition. INTRO TO APPLIED & PRE-CALCULUS MATH This new Grade 10 course is designed to prepare students for entry to Applied Mathematics or Pre-Calculus. In this Grade 10 math course the students will be exposed to the following topics: algebra, number sense, statistics, geometry, logical reasoning, functions and trigonometry. FAMILY STUDIES In Family Studies, students develop their self-concept through the study of child development and influences on human behaviour during adolescence. In doing so, they can better understand their relationships with peers, family, and members of the community, thereby promoting healthy relationships and lifestyle. Major topics include: 1. physical, social, intellectual, and emotional human needs 2. values, goals, attitudes, beliefs and resources 3. communication, conflict resolution, and decision making 4. the role of the family in society Family Studies students acquire a valuable skill set that helps to prepare them to be productive, responsible, and autonomous members of society. Students enjoy studying personally relevant topics that they can apply to daily interactions as well as many hands-on projects and activities.

3 FUTURES IN BUSINESS The goals of this course are: 1. To emphasize the need to develop a flexible plan for secondary and post-secondary education related to personal goals 2. To promote effective business communication skills 3. To promote effective management and retrieval of information through practical activities and projects 4. To provide personal guidelines for success in working with others 5. To show ability to develop and present employability business plans 6. To reinforce the importance of keeping accurate records through practical activities and projects This course has been designed around six major unit themes as follows: Futures in Business Business Communication Record Keeping and Money Management Planning for Future Learning Managing and Retrieving Information Personal Success Traits / Employability Skills HOME ECONOMICS Many of the skills learned in Home Economics today are life skills needed to live in our complex and fast-paced society. Because the everyday lifestyle of the family is changing so rapidly, the family is not always capable of teaching these skills. A home economics class can teach many of the skills necessary to manage viable resources effectively and efficiently and allow the student success through practice. Home Economics specializes in a study of ways in which families can improve their quality of life. This course is made up of two parts: Clothing and Textiles, and Foods and Nutrition. In each segment, the student will be able to... CLOTHING AND TEXTILES: 1. Develop understanding and skill in selection, use and care of textiles 2. Make informed decisions regarding textile products, and to relate textile choices to human needs and body image 3. Participate in construction techniques which promote creativity, healthy identity and personal satisfaction FOODS AND NUTRITION: 1. Relate food choice to the nutrient and energy needs of individuals and to recognize the importance of establishing and maintaining healthy lifestyles 2. As an informed consumer, make responsible food purchase decisions 3. Plan, prepare and serve nutritious, appealing and tasty foods The Grade 9 Home Economics course provides a skills and knowledge base for further study in the senior years Home Economics courses. The University of Manitoba recognizes Grade 12 Clothing, Housing and Design (40S), Grade 12 Family Studies (40S) and Grade 12 Nutrition and Foods (40S) as General Entrance Requirements for all faculties. LEADERSHIP Students are provided with an opportunity to develop their leadership skills through various classroom and practicum experiences. Students will develop in areas of public speaking and special events planning and will have a real hands-on experience with various school extra-curricular programs. Goals of this course include: promoting positive attitudes toward youth leadership, cooperation and participation in intramural and/or recreation activities; plan, organize and operate their own programs with increasing autonomy and pride; and development of individual and cooperative skills. Students will develop the skills to become interdependent positive leaders who are able to successfully plan, organize and implement their own programs (i.e. carnivals, tournaments, anti-drug campaigns, and community connections). INDUSTRIAL ARTS The Industrial Arts program is comprised of two separate elements - Graphic Communications and Woodworking. GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS: Welcome to the diverse field of Technology Education Graphic Communications! Technology will play a very important role in our lives as we move into a global community of Digital Learners. École Charleswood School reflects this and teaches technology to our students that will prepare them for a future that will require technological literacy. Below is a breakdown of the various themes and projects that will be completed: Computer Technology: This course will include computer awareness, hardware, software and communications.

4 Digital Photography: Digital Photography Editing and retouching. Webpage Design design, creation and production of a full home web page with optional uploading instruction to student server. Multimedia Technology Animation, computer, video and sound application and programs. Internet Applications browsers, communication, file and data transfers etc. Animation: Students will be introduced to 2-D and 3-D Animations and will work toward creating their own animations. CAD (Computer Aided Drafting): Students will design and a construct a 3D model of their dream house using 3D Home Architect. Video Editing: Students will create various videos such as stop-animation using software such as Pinnacle Studio and IMovie. Students will have the chance to complete bonus projects, based on their own interests, once ALL class projects have been completed. WOODWORKING: The grade 9 Woods Program will introduce the tools, materials and processes necessary to build more advanced projects. The program will cover; Basic drawing skills in both orthographic and isometric projection. Use of portable electrical tools; (router, palm sander, biscuit jointer, jigsaw, drill) Use of woodworking machines; belt disc sander, table mounted router, scroll saw, band saw, drill press, jointer, thickness planer, sliding compound MITRE saw. Laminating procedures for larger or detailed projects. Common types of fasteners and wood joints. The program will allow the student to build both a required project, and one of his/her choice. Students have in the past built structures/sets for school improvements; drama, band, or courtyard enhancement. JAZZ BAND Auditions for the ÉCS Jazz Ensemble take place in the first weeks of the school year. Students who are invited to take part in the Jazz Band will have many opportunities in the following areas: Jazz Theory: progressions. Students will learn major and blues scales and the structure of chords commonly found in jazz Jazz Styles: Students will be exposed to and perform many different styles of music in the jazz band setting, including swing, Latin, rock and funk. Improvisation: All jazz band students will be taught the skills necessary to improvise and will be given many opportunities to improvise jazz solos. Performances: Students will have many opportunities to perform, including ÉCS band concerts, local school concerts and local/out-of-town festivals. Jazz History/Listening Skills: Students will be introduced to some key figures in jazz history and will listen to many jazz recordings as a step toward learning the language of jazz RESOURCE SUPPORT PERIOD 0 credit Students who select this option could use the time afforded (3 periods a cycle) to get assistance with organization, complete homework, receive help with their courses, or attempt to achieve credits through online/distance education courses or by a Community Service Student-Initiated Project credit. By selecting this option, students will receive a maximum of 7.5 credits from Charleswood instead of 8. After students have selected this option, we will contact them about the nature of support they require so that they are timetabled appropriately. 5 ROBOTICS Course objectives: to become familiar with basic electricity principles to become familiar with basic soldering techniques to become familiar with the basic principles of robotics to become familiar with the design process for constructing a robot to become familiar with the process needed to construct a robot to become familiar with the process of using a kit to construct a robot to become familiar with why robotics are necessary to become familiar with the programming of robotics to become familiar with the various occupations that use robotic skills Course Content: basic electricity construction of a circuit basic soldering techniques proper methods of stripping and attaching wires history of robotics introduction to parts of a robot kit construction robot terminology programming a robot occupations in the work force Projects/Labs: each student will design and construct a robot each student will design, construct and program a robot to perform certain tasks SOUND-RECORDING/BROADCAST ENGINEERING Welcome to the diverse field of Technology Education Sound Engineering and Broadcasting! Technology will play a very important role in our lives as we move into a global community of Digital Learners. École Charleswood School reflects this and teaches technology to our students that will prepare them for a future that will require technological literacy. École Charleswood School is pleased to announce a school-initiated course entitled Sound-Recording/Broadcasting Engineering. This course will explore many facets and opportunities in the world of broadcasting and the music industry, as well as the recording studio. This course will explore a wide array of themes and topics. These will include: Recording Studio/Sound Engineering: Analog and digital hardware and software, including recording software such as Sound-Forge, Pro-Tools etc. Students will complete voice-overs and simulated radio stations, as well as radio and television commercial productions. The Science of Acoustics and Sound: Exploration of basic sound theory and problem solving techniques. Broadcasting: An introduction to a wide-variety of both audio and video broadcasting will be examined. Students will create and run a school-wide local radio station. Field trips to various professional and commercial workplaces will also take place. Video Editing: An introduction to video editing will be examined. Throughout the year, students will advance to the mastery level of video editing. Students will have a chance to write a basic movie score and produce and record their own sound effects to place into their movie creations. Professional musicians, engineers and broadcasters will visit our class to enhance our class themes and projects. We also look forward to visiting various media centers such as a TV and recording studio. Students will have a chance to work on various bonus projects throughout the year that are tailored to their individual interests.
