PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE OUTLINE 19 th APRIL 2009 Studio 27 Degrees, 621, Laxmi Plaza, Laxmi Industrial Estate, Off New Link Road, Andheri (W), Mumbai Cell: , Ten-day Photography Workshop This is a ten-day photography course for amateurs in the basic age category of 15 years onwards. Following are the tentative schedules of the course. These schedules are subject to change according to the convenience of the students. Students with their own SLR and digital cameras are preferred. However, we shall be training on our own cameras (both manual and auto-focus cameras), so those who don t have their cameras can learn on our cameras. The film rolls are to be got by the students for their own cameras (in case of film cameras). For our cameras, however, we shall be providing the film and processing it as well (in case of film cameras). We shall, however, be training mainly on digital cameras. The first day, Sunday, 19 th April 2009 is DAY ONE. Over the next ten days, the session timings shall be two hours in the evening mostly from 6pm-8pm or 7pm-9pm as per the convenience of the students. Day 1 Sunday 19 th April PM sharp Introduction to basic photography on the Canon EOS 20D digital SLR camera 8.2 megapixels. We shall start with the meaning of the word photo-graphy and proceed on to see how images are made through the play of light on canvas. This is a studio session theory day where the two basic key features of the camera (aperture and shutter speed) shall be introduced to the students. This is an important two hour theoretical session. The details of the aperture and shutter-speed readings are explained in this session. Day 2 introduction contd. Continuing with day 1, the session will start with a revision of the theory of apertures and shutter speed. This is a two-hour evening theory session where the students will begin to handle and observe the various features of the camera including the aperture and shutter. The day will conclude with an introduction to the in-built exposure meter of the manual and autofocus camera and the common lenses used in photography like the 35-70mm lens. The various other features of film and digital photography like film speed (ISO), lenses range, various exposure meter readings etc shall also be explained. Day 3 Still photography photographing objects, tabletops & products In the first part of this session, all doubts related to camera theory shall be cleared and two-or three-student batches will be formed to start with the practicals. The students will start with simple daylight (ambient) photography of still objects and products in the latter half of the session. The main focus of this session shall be on exposure and composition. A thorough study of the light meter shall be conducted in this session. Camera shall be on tripod all throughout this session. Day 4 - Single flash photography of still objects Introduction to flash photography, the first part of this session will be theoretical followed by single-source flash photography of still objects and people. Camera shall be handled on hand, not tripod, thereby emphasizing on the importance of a good shutter speed. Day 5 Portrait studio session double flash photography This three hour session is the longest session of the course and shall be conducted inside the studio with two or more studio flashes. The first part of the session shall be an introduction to
external light meters for flash photography followed by full lengths and close-up pictures by the students of live models. The second part (which may spill over to the next day) will consist of multiple flash photography of still objects (based on concepts given to the teams). Main focus of this session is execution of the brief as given by the instructor. For example, the students shall be required to do the advertisement campaign for products like, say, Nestle milk. Grading will be done based on visualization of the shot and then execution by the two/three-student team. This session may be extended to the next day Day 6 Zoom lens photography. Used in wild-life, press and sports Zoom lens and portrait photography (in black/white) of people in natural light. Introduction to advantages and limitations of zoom lenses. Their application in wild-life, press and sports. An introduction to the theory of wild-life and press photography. Session to be conducted in the afternoon unless decided otherwise. After the session, an analysis of all digital pictures till date shall be conducted in the studio. Day 7 Outdoor landscape and Picnic photography This is an early morning session and is one of the easiest sessions of the course. It is a fun easygoing session where the students will be photographing various subjects like landscape, expression of people, flowers, nature etc. Day 8 - Individual assignment session and digital photography LONG SESSION (Sunday) This session will commence with a digital photography schedule by the instructors in which all basics including depth-of-field, exposure compensation, slow shutter speed shooting etc will be demonstrated. In the latter half of the session, pick up a subject of your choice and complete an assignment in colour or B/W. The best six pictures are to be presented as part of your portfolio. A studio run-through of international award winning images and their making shall be presented. Session to be concluded with a session on How to photoshop images. We may go out for a team lunch after this session. Day 9 - Night photography session The session will start at around 8.30 pm when the batch will start to photograph various night life subjects like the moving traffic or buildings lit up by lights etc. This is an interesting session that focuses on slow shutter speed photography (with tripod) to capture the subjects in ambient light. We shall be photographing ghosts at night in (maybe) the ruins of a building, light-painting and shooting streaks of traffic lights etc Day 10 - Concluding session Discussion of various results over the course. Clearing of doubts. Introduction to filters and digital cameras and maintenance of camera, discussion on what camera and accessories to buy for various kinds of photography etc Digital photography and enhancement (Adobe Photoshop) are part of the course through out each session. A special digital session may be further added depending on the general interest of the batch. The course fees is Rs (Rs Nine Thousand Nine Hundred and fifty only) HARPREET BACHHER Director Studio 27 degrees We are proud to train more than 500 students many of whom have become excellent lensmen that capture the mind s eye onto canvas for posterity. If you ve got a passion for art and photography, we d love to have you as part of us! Cheers!!!
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1. Can Photography be taught in 10 days? I think its too little a time to teach everything in photography! You are right! Everything in photography cannot be taught in ten days. In fact, a lifetime is not enough to teach and learn everything. But the way this course is designed, we try and cover most of the basics that are essential for various kinds of photography like portraits, landscapes etc. By the end of the course, you will be trained to see images in everyday life and have the necessary tools and knowledge to capture it on film. By regular practice and experience in the months following the course, I think you will become a better lensman. Its all about the practice If you don t think you ll get 10 minutes per day to practice, pls don t even think of joining this course. It ll be a waste of time! When I started off as a photo-journalist, it took me almost a year to learn the basics of photography simply because there was no one to teach me. Senior photographers were too busy to take up the task of teaching an amateur and fellow photographer colleagues naturally felt threatened by another one trying to enter their domain. In photography, knowing what to do is half the battle won Doing it right, however, sometimes takes more than a lifetime! This course is a tribute to all those tough times that I encountered in trying to know what to do In short, this course teaches (in ten days) all that I struggled to learn in a year And that s not a bad deal for a 10-day course, is it? 2. I d really like to enroll for the course but don t think I can make it everyday because of my job. Do you conduct exclusive weekend courses? We d love to conduct weekend courses for you! There s a small problem however. Through our past experience, we have concluded that in trying to learn photography, the student needs to exclusively dedicate ten continuous days for best results. In this course, the combination of theory and practicals is designed in such a way that a hour revision cycle (from theory to practicals) is ideal for an amateur student to get a grip on a relatively difficult subject like photography. A gap of a week tends to get very long and yields very little efficiency in this matter. If you are really interested in learning this craft, do try and take out time for 10 days at a stretch I do believe you ll feel its worth it by the end of the course. And your boss might just let you slip off early for a week if he knows he s getting some fantastic portraits of himself shot on the next office picnic trip!!! 3. What if, for some reason, I am unable to make it for a class or am delayed? Will you be taking my class again or will I miss everything thats being taught on the day? Don t worry! We, at Studio 27 degrees, believe in having fun while trying to learn the technical and artistic aspects of photography. It is essential that you are relaxed and and the mind is stress-free. If, for some reason, you miss a class you have two options -- You may either come early on the next day and catch up with the batch or you may stay back the previous day to cover up for the next session. The timings on all sessions (except the first three) are pretty flexible and you can choose your convenient hours to come in and start with your practicals. There is however, a very strict policy of timings for the first three sessions (Sunday 4pm-6.30pm, Monday 7pm- 9.30pm and Tuesday 7pm-9.30pm). These are the base sessions that will strengthen your
basics on the subject and we suggest you DO NOT miss or be delayed at these sessions at any cost. 4. What are the general timings throughout the course? Sunday 19 th April 2009 (Day one) 4pm-6.30pm (Introduction theory) Monday 20 th April 2009 (Day two) 7pm-9.30pm (Introduction theory) Tuesday 21 st April 2009 (Day three) 7pm-9.30pm (theory + practicals) Wednesday 22 nd April 2009 (Day four) 6pm-9.30pm (Single flash) Thursday 23 rd April 2009 (Day five) 6pm-10pm (Assignment) Friday 24 th April 2009 (Day six) 4pm-7pm (Outdoor zoom) Saturday 25 th April 2009 (Day seven) 7am-11am (Outdoor picnic) Sunday 26 th April 2009 (Day eight) 9am-1pm (Technicals, photoshop) Monday 27 th April 2009 (Day nine) 8pm-11pm (Night photography) Tuesday 28 th April 2009 (Day ten) 7pm-9.30pm (Conclusion) 5. I am interested in taking up photography as a profession? Will this course be helpful? Why not? Every professional starts off as an amateur. If you can successfully complete this course and we spot a spark in your images, we may be able to suggest you to some of the biggest names in the industry and you may begin your internship under a fashion, industrial or car photographer (as your interest may be). Just make sure you pursue your passion of creating images with honesty and sincere dedication. There are no shortcuts to becoming a renowned lensman. 6. I just want to be able to click good images of my family but know absolutely nothing about professional photography. Do you recommend this course for me? If you are aiming to learn point-and-shoot camera photography or shoot decent images from your mobile phone camera, then this course is not for you. It is designed for people who want a little more than that from their images. We are generally thrilled to have students who know absolutely nothing about professional photography simply because they learn better basics than someone who is half-learnt on the subject. The aim of this course is simple to be able to teach enough photography so that you may be able to shoot, blow up and frame some of your best visuals for that beautiful picture wall in your living room. 7. What is the batch strength and what is the last date to register. Also, how do I register? Usually, the batch strength is limited to students on first-come-first-serve basis. We conduct just one batch at a time and there are plans to conduct a total of two batches this summer. In all likelihood, the next batch starts on the 3 rd May To register, pls fill out the registration form given here and submit to us. We shall be calling you shortly to confirm your registration.
8. What is the age limit for this course? Just a lower age limit of 14 years. Apart from this there is no upper age limit for people interested in learning photography. We have had housewives, engineers, doctors, architects, IT professionals, writers, assistant directors and retired personnel people of all age categories in the past batches and it s been fun interacting with such a varied range of people across almost all professions. Each person, brings along with him, a new experience and the will to capture it on film.
