1 Review of School Nursing Services Secondary Schools and Colleges - Parent and Carer Feedback Mon 2 September 2013 Fri 30 November 2013 Your chance to influence change Health and Wellbeing Big plans for the health of our people
2 Introduction Following the publication of the national document Getting it right for children, young people and families maximising the contribution of the school nursing team: Vision and Call to Action a local review of school nursing in the context of school aged healthy child services is taking place. This will ensure Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council delivers the best possible services for children and young people across the Borough now and in the future. Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council recently published its Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy which influences a variety of services delivered by Stockton Borough Council. This strategy outlines the following key priorities in relation to school nursing: Give every child the best start in life Enable all children, young people and adults to maximise their capabilities and have control over their lives Strengthen the role and impact of ill health prevention Background to the School Nursing Review In Stockton-on-Tees the school nursing service is provided by North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust (Community Services Division) for all school aged children and young people across the Borough. School nursing is a universal service which means that every child and young person can get support directly around common health issues. The service also helps make sure young people with more complex needs can receive extra support when they need it; and works with other providers of health services to offer support to children and young people. The role of a school nurse is to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people by delivering or offering support around: Keeping healthy Immunisations Emotional health Risk taking behaviours such as drugs and alcohol Sexual health education (appropriate to the child s age) Health checks Healthy eating and weight management The Healthy Child Programme Nationally early intervention is recognised as a key priority in both education and health settings for young people. Providing health services that promote positive lifestyle choices to all school aged children is seen as a successful tool in tackling potential future health issues. The Healthy Child Programme is a Department of Health initiative, which focuses on early help to keep children and young people safe and healthy. The programme also provides access to a wider range of specialist support when a child or young person has additional health needs. The programme recommends that education; health and other services work together on national health priorities including emotional health, promoting healthy weight, long term illnesses and disability, sexual health, drugs and alcohol. School nursing is a key part of the school age healthy child programme. In order for the programme to continue to meet the needs of children, young people and families. Stockton Borough Council s Public Health Team will be working with parents, stakeholders, children and young people to ensure they have a voice in developing services that are right for them. Tell us what you think The consultation will begin on Monday September 2 and will run for 12 weeks with a deadline of completing the survey of Friday 29 November. During this time we are interested to hear the views of people who are interested in or directly affected by the school nursing service. You can let us know your thoughts on these proposals in a variety of ways, as detailed below. Please note this survey aims to capture the views of parents/carers about the school nurse service/healthy child services for school aged children and young people as a whole not about individual professionals. 2 Review of School Nurse Services

Please note all answers you give will remain anonymous (nobody will be able to identify which views you expressed or which comments you made) information you give will be used to help Stockton Borough Council review health child services for school aged children in the Borough; and, all information will be stored and used in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998 and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council s Information Security Policy.
