1 Course #: MUSIC X 480 Course Title: Introduction to Logic Pro COURSE SYLLABUS Reg. # Units: 4.00 Credit Quarter/Yr: Winter 2015 Day/Time: Tot:10 meetings on Mondays (4 hours/week (No meeting 1/19, 2/16; 1 mtg. to be arranged) : 1:15pm to 5:15pm Dates: January 12 th to March 23 rd Location: Room B Westwood Center 1010 Westwood Blvd. Instructor: Maurizio OTTO De Togni Course Description This course introduces songwriters, composers, audio producers and sound engineers, to the primary features and basic user interface of Logic Pro X. Students learn the process of creating an actual song, from recording, editing with Flex Time/Pitch and arranging of MIDI sequences, to digital effects processing, mixing, automation, using Logic Pro s comprehensive array of software instruments, Apple Loops and DSP effects. This course covers the requirements necessary to successfully become an Apple Certified Pro, Level One in Logic Pro X. Objectives Veteran music producer/audio technologist (Apple Certified Trainer Logic Pro X Avid Certified Pro Tools Instructor), Maurizio OTTO De Togni ( uses step by step, project based instruction and straightforward explanations to teach everything from basic music creation to advanced production techniques. You will learn how to work and produce Music with Logic Pro X; Build a Song (Recording, editing, Arrange and Mix); Troubleshoot and Optimize. Prerequisite: Basic computer skills, and basic audio technology concepts. *: Certification (Optional) Certification (Optional) This course covers the requirements necessary to successfully become an Apple Certified Pro, Level One in Logic Pro X. By taking and passing the Apple Certified Pro exam, a user is given Apple Certified Pro status which allows them to distinguish themselves to colleagues employers and prospective clients as a skilled user of the chosen software application This certification gives individuals a competitive edge in today s ever changing job market. The exam is not available at UCLA. Unit 2 PRODUCTION (AUDIO): RECORDING: Recording Audio Settings; Recording Audio on a Single Instrument and on Multiple Tracks; Recording Additional Takes; Recording in Cycle mode and Punching in and out. Additional settings Unit 3: EDITING (AUDIO): Comp-ing Takes Techniques, Using Fades and Cross-fades, Using the Flex tool to modify and manipulate an audio file, Quantize audio Regions, Using the Audio Track Editor for editing audio, Using the Audio File Editor to reverse a sound. Deleting Audio Files in the Bin, Importing Audio Files. Unit 4: PRODUCTION PART 1 (MIDI): PRODUCE A VIRTUAL DRUM TRACK: Create a Drummer Track and choose and drummer and drum kit, Edit the drummer performance, Buid an arrangment and edit the new performances, Make the drummer play behind or ahead the beat, Customize and create your own drum kit, Tune and dampen individual kit pieces. Unit 5: PRODUCTION PART 2 (MIDI): RECORDING MIDI & USING CONTROLLERS: Record MIDI performances, Quantize MIDI recordings, Merge new recordings, Recording in Take Folders, Step-by-Step MIDI recording, Create Track Stacks, Layering Instruments, Smart Controls, Using Logic Remote on ipad, MIDI effects. Unit 6: CREATING & EDITING (MIDI): Creating & Editing in the Piano Roll Editor, Creating & Editing in the Score Editor, Time & Scale Quantize individual notes, Editing MIDI Continuous Controller Events in the event list and drawing region automation using the MIDI Draw Area; Importing MIDI Files.
