1 Course #: MUSIC X 480 Course Title: Introduction to Logic Pro COURSE SYLLABUS Reg. # Units: 4.00 Credit Quarter/Yr: Winter 2015 Day/Time: Tot:10 meetings on Mondays (4 hours/week (No meeting 1/19, 2/16; 1 mtg. to be arranged) : 1:15pm to 5:15pm Dates: January 12 th to March 23 rd Location: Room B Westwood Center 1010 Westwood Blvd. Instructor: Maurizio OTTO De Togni Course Description This course introduces songwriters, composers, audio producers and sound engineers, to the primary features and basic user interface of Logic Pro X. Students learn the process of creating an actual song, from recording, editing with Flex Time/Pitch and arranging of MIDI sequences, to digital effects processing, mixing, automation, using Logic Pro s comprehensive array of software instruments, Apple Loops and DSP effects. This course covers the requirements necessary to successfully become an Apple Certified Pro, Level One in Logic Pro X. Objectives Veteran music producer/audio technologist (Apple Certified Trainer Logic Pro X Avid Certified Pro Tools Instructor), Maurizio OTTO De Togni ( uses step by step, project based instruction and straightforward explanations to teach everything from basic music creation to advanced production techniques. You will learn how to work and produce Music with Logic Pro X; Build a Song (Recording, editing, Arrange and Mix); Troubleshoot and Optimize. Required Media and Materials Apple Pro Training Series: Logic Pro X: Professional Music Production, by David Nahmani, Peachpit Press, (book and/or ebook) Buy Logic X: Personal Computer (Apple with Intel: 4GB ram (8GB recommended) OSX.8.4 or later 40GB of disk space available to install Logic X and media content + 8GB space available for class material):

(Optional) Audio Interface (Optional) MIDI/USB Musical Keyboard with USB Cable Note The Introduction to Logic class at UCLA extension will be teaching on a Logic X system on an imac computer. Prerequisite: Basic computer skills, and basic audio technology concepts. *: Certification (Optional) Certification (Optional) This course covers the requirements necessary to successfully become an Apple Certified Pro, Level One in Logic Pro X. By taking and passing the Apple Certified Pro exam, a user is given Apple Certified Pro status which allows them to distinguish themselves to colleagues employers and prospective clients as a skilled user of the chosen software application This certification gives individuals a competitive edge in today s ever changing job market. The exam is not available at UCLA. For more info: Grade Calculation (Grade mode: Web) Course grades will be based the on the completion of exams, assignments, and classroom participation as follows: Assignment/Exam #1 (quiz): 35 % Assignment/Exam #2 (project): 45 % Attendance/Punctuality (2% x meeting): 20 % Total % must equal % Letter/Grade % A+ (98-100) A (93-97) A- (90-92) B+ (88-89) B (83-87) B- (80-82) C+ (78-79) C (73-77) C- (70-72) D+ (68-69) D (63-67) D- (60-62) F (<59) A grade of C or better is considered a passing grade. Certificate students must take 400 level courses for a grade. Please note that ALL COURSE GRADES ARE FINAL. PRE-PRODUCTION: MAKING MUSIC WITH LOGIC X, NOW: (Building an Arrangement using Apple loops, mixing & exporting the mix). Unit 2 PRODUCTION (AUDIO): RECORDING: Recording Audio Settings; Recording Audio on a Single Instrument and on Multiple Tracks; Recording Additional Takes; Recording in Cycle mode and Punching in and out. Additional settings Unit 3: EDITING (AUDIO): Comp-ing Takes Techniques, Using Fades and Cross-fades, Using the Flex tool to modify and manipulate an audio file, Quantize audio Regions, Using the Audio Track Editor for editing audio, Using the Audio File Editor to reverse a sound. Deleting Audio Files in the Bin, Importing Audio Files. Unit 4: PRODUCTION PART 1 (MIDI): PRODUCE A VIRTUAL DRUM TRACK: Create a Drummer Track and choose and drummer and drum kit, Edit the drummer performance, Buid an arrangment and edit the new performances, Make the drummer play behind or ahead the beat, Customize and create your own drum kit, Tune and dampen individual kit pieces. Unit 5: PRODUCTION PART 2 (MIDI): RECORDING MIDI & USING CONTROLLERS: Record MIDI performances, Quantize MIDI recordings, Merge new recordings, Recording in Take Folders, Step-by-Step MIDI recording, Create Track Stacks, Layering Instruments, Smart Controls, Using Logic Remote on ipad, MIDI effects. Unit 6: CREATING & EDITING (MIDI): Creating & Editing in the Piano Roll Editor, Creating & Editing in the Score Editor, Time & Scale Quantize individual notes, Editing MIDI Continuous Controller Events in the event list and drawing region automation using the MIDI Draw Area; Importing MIDI Files. Unit 7: ADVANCED EDITING: EDITING TIME & PITCH: Matching the Project Tempo to an Audio File s Tempo, Add/Insert Tempo Changes and Curves, Time Stretching and Tempo Matching with Flex Time Editing, Pitch Editing & Tuning vocals with Flex Pitch, Create Apple Loops, Apply Turntable sound-effects, Using Varispeed, Follow the groove feature. Unit 8:

5 ARRANGEMENT & EDITING: Loop regions and convert loops to individual regions, Repeat regions in the workspace, Pack regions into folders, Save alternative arrangements, Insert silence to create a new section, remove a section, Remove silence or background noise from a region Unit 9: MIXING: Preparing for Mixing, Using the Mixer, Using Plug-ins, Adjusting Levels, Choosing Pan Positions, Choosing EQ Settings, Using Delay and Reverberation, Using Dynamic Processing Plug-ins. Use folders and summing stacks. Using Bus sends and Aux channel strips, Using screensets, Tips and Tricks. Unit 10 (week 10): AUTOMATION: Track-based Automation, Writing and Editing Offline Automation, Recording Live Automation, and Using External Controllers, Export your MIX (bouncing techniques), External MIDI devices. KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS. His background includes wide experience as a musician, composer, arranger, programmer/pro Tools operator, and audio technologist for Italian, American, and international artists in the classical, pop, rock and dance fields as well as international commercials (Heineken, Subaru, Campari ). For Macworld@ magazine and Macworld Online@, he wrote almost a hundred of articles on music data processing and audio-pro solutions (which includes the "ilife-pro" book). He worked as a foreign contributor on many prestigious events (NAMM show, AES, MAcWorld WWDC ). He is a member of: SIAE (Italian Society of Authors and Publishers) and NARAS/GRAMMY (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences). He lives in Beverly Hills with his lovable wife and adorable daughter. With 46 certifications that make him "the most certified man in the planet", Otto's Apple Logic Pro and Avid Pro Tools credentials include "Apple Logic Pro X Certified Pro" (since v.7), "Apple Distinguished Audio Professional" and "Avid Certified Pro Tools Expert" (since v.7) along with qualifications as an "Apple Logic Pro X Certified Trainer" and "Avid Certified Pro Tools Instructor".
