2 Required: *Text: COST ACCOUNTING, Sixth Canadian Edition by Horngren/Foster/Datar/Gowing My Accounting Lab, through Pearson Education, available on-line MonocleCAT software license: ISBN see below COURSE OBJECTIVES AND THEME: This course is a continuation of BUS*2230, an Introduction to Management Accounting. The issues addressed and analytical tools taught are practical in application. Each student is encouraged to adopt the role of a business manager confronted with a real-life situation. The student will learn how to apply management accounting tools to accounting data. Students will use the tools to address issues and make appropriate and applicable decisions. While the text literature and many of the problems focus on a manufacturing setting, the concepts are applicable to all enterprises. An attempt has been made to introduce as many service industry examples as possible. This course is the second of the three Management Accounting Courses required for the Certified Management Accounting (CMA) designation in Canada. The emphasis in this course is on learner-centredness, in accordance with the University's Mission Statement, and as such, there is a significant element of self-teaching involved. The time commitment will be commensurate to other types of courses but the benefit to students working on the problem components outweighs the time commitment. CLASS WORK: Class time will be spent predominately on end-of chapter problems. It is assumed that each student will come to class prepared, having read all the assigned material before class and having attempted all of the assigned problems each week. Should you need to miss a class e.g., for religious purposes, please advise the instructor in advance. ON LINE QUIZZES: There will be four online quizzes based on previous weeks materials and their application. Each quiz will be in MyAccounting Lab, similar to the problems undertaken in the preceding weeks. Check the MyAccounting Lab to confirm times available and to assure oneself of the availability of the material and service to maximize your performance in the course. 3 CLASS CONTRIBUTION: The class work will include the use of the monoclecat software that enables and encourages student engagement in the class problems during class time. These short quizzes are worth 10% of the final grade. The full 10 marks will be assigned to each student that attempts a minimum of 60% of the inclass monoclecat quizzes. STUDENT TEAM SUBMISSIONS: There will also be two short problem/reports handed in by teams. These submissions will occur one before the midterm exam and the other after the midterm. Students will placed in teams early in the term with the task of undertaking two assigned Comprehensive Problems. Details of the requirements will be posted on courselink. As these assignments are team responsibilities, the grades received are for the team. A peer evaluation form will be provided for those desiring to use it. It is recommended that the teams establish appropriate methods of coordination and collaboration to complete the tasks assigned. To ensure success in the team assignments, teams recommended to conclude a contract on their operating procedures and regularly meet to attempt the earlier assigned work such that team members can become familiar with each other and one another s work style and strengths. Material handed in for grading must include all team members names and student numbers. Ensure that all spelling and grammar is correct and that what the team wishes to say, is being said clearly and succinctly. Business writing styles are acceptable and preferred. For further resources on business writing please refer to the learning commons in the library. Students are reminded that representing the work of others as his/her own (plagiarism) constitutes academic misconduct. MID-TERM EXAM: The midterm exam will be held on Tuesday February 26 th from 5:30 6:50. The location will be announced in class and posted on courselink. 4 FINAL EXAM: The examination time is set by the Registrar. The exam is on Saturday April 13, 11:30am-1:30pm. It is the student s responsibility to resolve time conflicts. The examination may encompass any material covered during the semester. RECOMMENDED PROBLEMS: In addition to the in-class problems, a list of recommended problems will be provided and the solutions to these problems will be posted on courselink. These problems will be similar to the ones taken up in class and make excellent review problems. They are there to provide extra practice. As a student s father once said, You don t read accounting, you do accounting. In other words, for most people it comes down to practice, practice, practice. 6 MONOCLECAT MonocleCAT will be used to establish the class contribution marks for this course. MonocleCAT is a web-based system that allows immediate interactive feedback to both aid and assesses understanding of the course material. MonocleCAT feedback, questions and simulations are launched on demand by the professor during class. Students can participate using their laptops, netbooks, ipad, smartphones, or cell-phones. MonocleCAT questions and answers can also be reviewed by the student throughout the semester should they be made available by the professor. We anticipate utilizing a number of questions in many classes. MonocleCAT is licensed by student subscription, with unlimited courses per student. Subscription keys are available at the university bookstore or directly on the Top Hat Monocle website at Tutorials and technical support is available on the website once you login. A limited number of free MonocleCAT licenses are available for students in financial need contact either Lynn Carty or Matthew Gerard as soon as possible but no later than January 17, Should you have financial need which may prevent you from purchasing the hardware necessary to use MonocleCat, contact Lynn Carty or Matthew Gerard for alternate arrangements. As well, students who do not wish to pay for a MonocleCAT license and/or a MyAccountingLab subscription a will have the weight allocated equally over their midterm and final exams.
