Educational Technology (University of Ilorin) PGD Computer Science (University of Ilorin) MNAEMT, MFAAN Department of Science Education, Faculty of Education University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Kwara State Office Location: - Department of Science Education Building, University of Ilorin Consultation Hours: 2-30pm Tuesdays & Thursdays Course Content Advanced work in drawing, printing and painting; further exploration and development of lettering calligraphy and further experience with colour and its application. 15h (T); 90h (P); C Course Description: This is an advance course for graphics design with more practical oriented approach. Graphic design generated media will be produced and displayed through projector. Student will be required to design this graphic media adhering to the rules of bringing into play, all the knowledge acquired from Graphic Design I (EDT 201). This course will involve the production of informational materials, training materials and learning aids. The selection of appropriate calligraphic lettering style for the production of any one of the textual materials listed above will form the basis for this course in relation to promoting visual literacy. The role graphic design play in instruction will be extensively explained and discussed at this level. The following will also be given adequate attention in connection to graphic design for instructional purpose; Letter spacing, colour (analogous & complementary), figure-ground contrast, serif and sans serif letter type faces amongst others. Computer generated graphic design will as well enjoy attention in relation to the production of informational materials, learning aids and training materials. The production of multimedia requires the accurate representation of instructions through its element; printed text, animation, graphic e.t.c., to affect concrete learning that will reduce cognitive load for effective and efficient working memory. Thus, students will be exposed to strategy adopted in the design of instruction in a multimedia environment in relation to multimedia elements listed above.
2 Course Justification: The integration of visual aids for teaching and learning has been found to be indispensable as it contribute to the concretization of knowledge. The presentation of instructions in the status of abstract, iconic or enactive requires a sound knowledge in the graphical representation of instructions for better and meaningful understanding in students. The transmission of meaningful information involves the selection of accurate text style, letter size and spacing, grounded with well illustrated drawing or pictures. Therefore, there arouse the need to put student of Educational Technology through the rudiments of integrating the foundation knowledge acquire from Graphic Design I (EDT 201) with the advancement in drawing techniques, painting processes and printing methods Printed media is a vital learning and instructional materials that has contributed to the profession of teaching. Books, magazines, comics, newspapers, journals e.t.c. are few example of printed materials that students of Educational Technology will be requested to produce, and it should be easy to comprehend by the reader/learner. Thus, this course will equip student teachers in preparing them for the task of being successful as a teacher and as well play a supporting and advisory role to their colleague in the production of LIMS. Computer Aided Learning is prevalent, thus the design of multimedia learning environment through the computer is fast growing. In this wise, there is need to introduce student to the inputs of graphic design in multimedia instruction. Course Objectives: The general objective of the course as an essential element of the B.Ed. (Educational Technology) is to prepare and turn out graduate in possession of variety of skills with self-will and command of designing and producing learning and instructional materials (LIMS) as well as to render support services to practicing teachers at all strata of education. At the end of the course, students will be able to:. Produce any textual material for teaching a particular concept.. Design visual aids well grounded with pictures/images.. Integrate all required skills & rules to the design of instruction. Course Requirement:. This is a compulsory course for all students studying Educational technology. In view of this, students are expected to participate in all the course activities, including the practical and have a minimum of 75% attendance to be able to write the final examination.. Practical designing and production of learning and instructional materials by will be carried out by individual student.. Students will as well be expected to treat the study questions and assignments.. Students will be required to possess graphic design and drawing equipments.
3 Methods of Grading: No Item Score % Practical Class assignments/test Comprehensive final examination Total Course Delivery Strategies: The course will be delivered through the face-to-face method, theoretical materials, e-materials (lecture note) provided during lecture and practical studio sessions. Students will be encouraged and required to design and produce learning & instructional materials (LIMS) like pattern making, posters, book cover jacket, paper bags, greeting cards, emblems, border design, books or story illustration in practically conducted class lectures/assignments/test. Practical Schedules:. The practical session involves the introduction of students to graphics design studio with all the variety of equipments/tools and materials available for engaging in graphical design act of producing learning and instructional materials (LIMS).. Students will engage in a self-effort practical designing and production of learning/ instructional materials under the tutelage and supervision of course lecturer. The practical will be conducted as follows:. Advance lettering and calligraphy (pen lettering).. Advance drawing in instructional materials design. Advance painting in instructional material design. Advance printing in instructional materials design.. Designing and producing learning and instructional materials I. Designing and producing learning and instructional materials II. Designing and producing learning and instructional materials III. Application of advance graphic design knowledge to production of LIMS I.. Objective: Student will identify and apply the sense of legibility and visibility for arousing the learners attention while using pen lettering for text design. Description: Graphical production often requires the use of lettering to complete the message carried by visual materials. Lettering should always be prepared within adequate visual standards. Lettering should be simple, probably block letters and with the right type face (serif or sans serif). Information will be available for students on how to determine selection for the right type of lettering style in the design of instruction for teaching-learning purpose. 1. Design the word instruction using calligraphy method 2. Use any type face of your choice for Q1 3. Use sans serif to design educational technology
5 Week 2: Advance Drawing in Instructional Materials Design. Objective: Students will be able to draw images in a layout manner. Layout means the appropriate arrangement of components, elements and details of visual message for the control and accomplishment of stated/desired objective. Description: Drawing is the illustration of image or object with lines in graphical manner. The image or object so represented must contain details about the message to be transmitted to students. Students will be taught on how to accommodate words, symbols and pictorials with the right magnification for a measurable distance of the viewers. 1. Draw to specification of your choice, the front view of Ed-Tech building 2. Write and design the inscription Edu-Tech Center on the drawing in Q1 Week 3: Advance Painting in Instructional Material Design. Objective: Painting involves colour, and colour should be used for reasons but not for just colouration purpose. Students will be able to use colour for reasons that promote learning in students. Description: Reasons for painting are numerous, but in the case of learning purpose, paintings are base on attractiveness, increased visibility, separation of part of visuals, direction of eye movements, and recapture of the eye for recycling, realism, emphasis and impact. Students will be exposed to how to apply colour (painting) in an illustrated image for any one of the simple reasons listed above.
6 1. Select appropriate colour to paint Ed-Tech building drawn above Week 4: Advance Printing in Instructional Material Design. Objective: Students will be able to print information on a paper/cardboard/clothing material for instructional purpose. Description: Printing involves the making of an impression of words with pictures on a paper/cardboard/fabrics with hand or other available technology. And printed materials, irrespective of the materials contribute immensely to education. So, students of Educational Technology will be successfully integrated into the processes that are involved in the production of printed materials. Week 5: Designing and Producing Learning and Instructional Materials I Objective: Students will be able to produce informational materials for teaching a particular concept in their teaching subject.
7 Description: Informational materials are categories of printed materials consisting of brochures, newsletters and annual reports. These materials involve production that require acquisition of basic graphic design skills. Students will therefore be exposed to the necassary skills required for a communicable informational material. 1. What do you understand by informational material? 2. Design the back cover of an annual report 3. Design and produce the center page of a newsletter. Week 6: Designing and Producing Learning and Instructional Materials II Objective: Students will be able to produce training materials for training teachers on how to teach a particular concept in their teaching subject. Description: Training materials are forms of printed media that provide directions, information and activities for instructional purpose. Example of training materials include; handout sheets, study guides and instructional manuals. Student will taught on how to design each of these, and with highlighted features peculiar to them in respect to graphic design. 1. What do you understand by training material? 2. Design an instructional manual. 3. Design and produce a study guide material.
8 Week 7: Designing and Producing Learning and Instructional Materials III Objective: Students will be able to produce learning aid materials for particular hardware/software assemblage and operational usability. Description: Learning aid materials are designed to provide step-by-step instructions for performing a task. The purpose might be to assemble and then operate equipment, troubleshoot for repair or maintenance or to apply to the steps of a procedure. Example of learning aid include guide sheet, job aid and picture series. Students will be trained in the specificity, simplicity and clarity of informational and directional content contained in learning aid material for individual application. 1. What do you understand by learning aid material? 2. Design a job aids material 3. Design and produce a picture series.. Week 8: Class Test Description: Students will be assessed from the practical aspect on all the topics taught in this course so far.
9 Week 9: Application of advance graphic design knowledge to production of LIMS I. Objective: Students will be able to identify and select appropriate lettering styles in multimedia designed learning environment. Description: Multimedia learning environment has gained tremendous attention and support in the education industry globally. Thus, printed text is one of the elements of multimedia instruction. The advancement of graphic design in its contribution to multimedia will be highlighted and explained, which will provide information in the perspective of selecting lettering style in such learning environment. 1. Design an informational material of brochure type on graphic design 2. The brochure should contain information on the topic taught so far Week 10: Application of advance graphic design knowledge to production of LIMS II. Objective: Students will be able to identify and select appropriate lettering style in multimedia designed learning environment. Description: At this point, the positive implication of graphic in multimedia learning instruction will be given priority. Students will be trained on the principles guiding the integration of graphic representation of information in multimedia instruction in order not to reduce the cognitive load for effective functionality of the working memory. 1. Design a training material of on how to operate a projector. 2. Also, state the troubleshooting procedure for projector s malfunction.
10 Week 11: Application of advance graphic design knowledge to production of LIMS III. Objective: Students will be able to design and produce multimedia instruction packages for their teaching subject. Description: Using the knowledge acquired from graphic design generally, students will be stimulated to design a simple multimedia instruction in their teaching subject area. 1. Design a learning aid material of picture series 2. Give step-wise information on how to perform the task.
11 Week 12: Class Test Description: Student will be assessed from the theoretical aspect of all the topics taught in this course Week 13: Production of Graphic Design Materials. Description: Students will be required to produce any graphic design material of their choice, with a particular impression / message sent to the viewers. Week 14: Classroom Exhibition Description: The graphic design materials produce by students will be exhibited in the classroom with an external evaluator grading each of the students s work. Scores will be awarded for each work in regard to simplicity, specificity and clarity of message. Week 15: General Revision on Graphic Design.
