Dr.DebraTupecollaboratedwithMs.DanielleButintodevelopacomprehensiverehabilitationprogram thatincludedaninitialongsiteneedsassessment,aservicedeliverymodel,aplanfortraininglocal Haitianparaprofessionalstaff,aplanformaterialresourceacquisitionanddistribution,andprogram evaluation.columbiaoccupationaltherapyand physicaltherapystudentsvolunteeredtheir servicestorefurbishwheelchairs,mobilityaides andadaptiveequipment.students,alumniand occupationaltherapypractitionersthroughoutnyc donatedfundsandsupplies.afterconductinga needsassessmentinhaitiinfebruary 10,an interdisciplinaryteamofoccupationaltherapists, physicaltherapists,andarehabilitationmedicine residentarrivedinportauprince,haitiamonth later.underdebtupe sleadership,thisteam triaged,evaluatedandprovidedservicesinatent onthegroundsoflescentregheskio.lescentre Gheskioisaninfectiousdiseaseclinicthatexpandedtheirpracticetomeettheneedsoftheclientsthey served.theywereconfrontedwithseriousinjuriesanddisablingconditionsasaresultofthe earthquake.haitianrehabilitationtechniciantraineesworkedsidebysidewithdeb steamand participatedinmorningandafternoonclasses.asaresult,5ofthe23traineesarenowemployedatles CentresGheskio. ServiceLearninginNicaragua InMay2010threesecondyeargraduatestudents,BriannaLewis,EllenOseiand ElizabethCohenparticipatedintheNicaraguaServiceLearningelectivecourse.The focusoftheelective,whichtookplaceinmanagua,nicaragua,wastoprovide educationalandtechnicalsupporttothe familiesandstaffatthelospiptoscenter.thestaffatlos Piptosidentifiedaneedtofurtherdevelopandexpandtheir knowledgeandskillrepertoireinmeetingtheneedsof childrenwithbehavioralconditionsandtheirfamilies. PartiallyfundedbyandincollaborationwithGlobalHealth Partners, theotstudentsassisteddebtupeinthe developmentoftheprogramcurriculum,ledsmallgroup discussion,anddemonstratedoccupationaltherapy interventionsandtechniques. Ourstudentsalsohadtheopportunitytoexploretheroleof Nicaragua sculturalandsocialcontextontheopportunities availabletofamiliesandchildrenwithdisabilities.
8 Cuba WhenDebTupefirstwenttoCuba,littledidsheknowthatshewouldbemaking numerousfollowguptrips,eventuallycenteringherdoctoraldissertationthere. HerinitialjourneystoCubaweretoconducteducationalexperiencesforOTfaculty andstudentsfromthomasjeffersonuniversity,whereshewasafacultymember,andthenwithfaculty andstudentsfromcolumbia.theseexperiencesandtherelationshipsheforgedwithelcentrode RehabilitacionyNeurodesarrollo,inCardenas,ledtoresearchsheconductedonThe$Lived$Experience$ of$caring:$structure,$context$and$typologies.$ DebwasaskedtoreturntoCubaandpresentaScientificSessionatElCentrodeRehabilitaciony Neurodesarrollo.Thesessionisopentophysicians,neonatologists,educators,andtheCenter sstaffof rehabilitationpersonnel.thesessionfocusesonthefindingsfrom thecollaborativestudyfromelcentro,andcoverstheresultsofthe surveyofmothers perspectivesoftheserviceselcentroprovides, howmothersandtherapistsinteractduringtreatmentsessions,the mothers narrativesthatfocusontheirunderstandingoftheir children sdisabilities,andtheactionstheytakeinordertoacquire resourcesandservicesincuba. Beginningin2008,ourprogramenteredinto anagreementwithcaribbeankidsand FamiliesTherapyOrganizationinanexciting, ongoinginternationalfieldworkprogram. Whilewehavebeenplacingstusdentsin internationalsettingsformanyyears,thisisthefirsttimewehave establishedanongoingpartnershipwithaspecificsite.through theeffortsofpammilleranddebtupe,weestablishedalevel2 pediatricfieldworkexperienceforselectcolumbiastudents.spending12weeksimmersedinthe Trinidadculturewhilelearningaboutpediatricoccupationaltherapyinthiscountryhasbeenan invaluableandrewardingexperience.inadditiontoourstudentsprovidingotservicesundersthe supervisionofannbcotboardcertifiedtherapist,theyalsoareinvolvedwithprogramdevelopment, occupationaltherapyadvocacy,andparticipateintheassociationforcarribeanoccupatinaltherapists.
