3 Thinking of Having a Baby? When is the best time to prepare for pregnancy? Long before conceiving. As soon as a woman decides that giving birth is in her future, she should be aware that proper health before becoming pregnant is almost as important as maintaining a healthy body during pregnancy. One of the most important steps is a pre-pregnancy examination, which may include: An assessment of personal and family medical history Blood tests for Rh factor and immunity to rubella, hepatitis B and toxoplasmosis A discussion about immunizations that may be needed, such as chicken pox or rubella An infection screening to determine sexually transmitted diseases or urinary tract infections that could be harmful to the fetus and the mother Other steps that can help reduce the risk of complications and help prepare for a healthy pregnancy and delivery include: Stop smoking and avoid second-hand smoke. Follow a nutritious diet, maintain proper weight and exercise regularly. Manage pre-existing medical conditions. Help prevent birth defects. Take folic acid to help reduce the risk of birth defects to the brain and spinal cord; avoid exposure to alcohol and illegal drugs; and be sure to inform your physician of any current medications (prescription and over-the-counter). Avoid exposure to toxic and chemical substances and radiation. Avoid potential sources of infection such as undercooked meat, raw eggs, and exposure to cat feces, cat litter or insects that may have been in contact with cat feces. Begin taking a daily prenatal vitamin prescribed by your physician. Identify domestic violence issues. Seek assistance through your physician if necessary. Also, consider meeting with a genetic counselor to evaluate your risk of having a child with a birth defect if you are over age 35, have a family history of a genetic disorder, or are adopted and do not know your family health history. To select a Palomar Pomerado Health physician for your pre-pregnancy and pregnancy care, or to register for a PPH childbirth preparation class, please call The HealthSource at For a physician referral, or to register for a class, call The HealthSource at

6 Baby Sign Language 6:30 9 p.m. Monday, April 18 Do you find it difficult to understand what your baby or toddler is feeling or trying to communicate? Try learning and teaching baby sign language to your little one. Baby sign language is an early communication tool for hearing babies and toddlers. Starting as early as 7 months, before verbal skills are developed, your baby can begin to learn to express his or her wants or needs through the art of signing. Studies have shown that signing babies may learn to speak earlier; develop larger vocabularies; have stronger parent/ child bonds; show more interest in books; engage in more sophisticated play; have less frustration, crying and tantrums; and have increased IQ scores. Palomar Pomerado Health will present a special session on Baby Sign Language from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Monday, April 18 at. Monta Briant, a Sign2Me Certified Instructor, will teach 50 to 60 signs during the class and provide couples with a copy of her book, Baby Sign Language Basics. Under California law, children must be secured in an appropriate child passenger restraint seat (safety seat or booster seat) until they are at least 6 years old or weigh at least 60 pounds. Follow these guidelines to keep your child safe: Infants Infants should ride rear-facing and reclined at a 45-degree angle until 1 year old and at least 20 pounds. Never place an infant in the front seat of a vehicle with an airbag. Never hold your infant on your lap when riding in a vehicle. Toddlers Toddlers over age 1 and 20 pounds may ride forward-facing and upright with a harness until 40 pounds. Children Children who are over 40 pounds or have outgrown the harness system may use a lap and shoulder beltpositioning booster seat. Children who are over 80 pounds and at least 4 feet 9 inches tall usually fit in a lap and shoulder belt. Children age 12 and younger are safest in the back seat. Installing a Safety Seat Select a seat that fits your child one type does not fit all. Choose a seat that fits in your vehicle and is easy to install correctly. Always follow the child safety seat and vehicle instruction manuals. Be sure the vehicle s seat belt is routed correctly. Fasten safety seat tightly with vehicle seat belt. Fit the child safety seat harness snugly to the child. Never use a safety seat or booster seat if you don t know its history or if it has been involved in a crash. The San Diego Police Department offers free, no-appointment car seat safety inspections on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month beginning at 8 a.m. (first 25 people) and 11:30 a.m. (first 15 people) at Cypress Canyon Road in San Diego. My desire to learn more inspired me to become an instructor. I wanted to help other expectant couples prepare for the arrival of their new babies. Lamaze, a childbirth-training program that involves a birthing coach, is the method that Knudsen teaches at PMC. Expectant couples learn how to be active participants during labor and delivery exploring the signs and stages of labor, hospital procedures, breathing and relaxation exercises, medication options and Cesarean birth, as well as infant feeding and postpartum adjustments. Expectant fathers benefit from childbirth classes as well. Knudsen says they frequently comment on how much more involved they feel because of their participation in her classes. My instructor was very down to earth and helped to relax me. That s what one class participant had to say about their experience with Regina Knudsen, a certified childbirth educator (CCE) who has been teaching childbirth classes at Palomar Medical Center (PMC) since This class should help to ease any fears a couple may have about childbirth, says Knudsen, who delivered her own children at PMC. The information they learn here, combined with the expertise and support of the hospital staff, will help ease them into their new role as parents. 10 January - April
