7 Class Instructor: Wendy Spry, LVN Passionate about educating new and expectant parents about healthcare issues and the overall importance of cord blood preservation, Wendy Spry, LVN and Certified Perinatal Support Specialist (CPSS), is the resident Healthcare Educator at PacifiCord. Her primary role is to teach parents, as well as the surrounding healthcare community, including physicians, nurses and childbirth educators, about the benefits of cord blood preservation through classes, intensive training sessions, newsletters and facility tours at PacifiCord. Because cord blood preservation is just one of the many important decisions expectant parents need to make, Spry also provides seminars that focus on cord blood banking, as well as important parenting issues, such as infant CPR, infant car seat safety and breastfeeding. Concurrently serving as a nurse at the Women s Center & Newborn Nursery at Orange County s Coastal Communities Hospital, Spry is intimately connected to new mothers and their unique needs and concerns, as well as the latest advancements in stem cell therapy research. Spry educates expectant mothers on childbirth, breastfeeding, newborn care and parenting. Through her lactation work, Spry has contributed to the increased breastfeeding percentage at Coastal Communities Hospital, as well as overall patient satisfaction scores in the labor and delivery department. Prior to Coastal Communities Hospital, Spry worked at Birth Wisdom, an intensive training facility for CPSS and Professional Labor Support Specialists. While at Birth Wisdom, she developed and implemented training and curriculum for classes on childbirth education, lactation, advanced doula training, and newborn care. Spry also contributed to the development of the CPSS certification system, ensuring greater education and safety for those providing bedside care to laboring mothers. In 2003, Spry was quoted as an expert source in the book The Doula Advantage about the role of doulas in the childbirth process. Prior to entering the nursing field, Spry was an entertainer for Disney and ABC Television where she portrayed popular Disney characters, including Snow White, in various national and international shows, parades, commercials and television specials. An Orange County, Calif., native, Spry lives in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., with her three children: Tyler (age 16), Madeline (age 14) and Evan (age seven). A graduate of California State University, Long Beach, and Pacific College, Spry enjoys spending time with her children, her two dogs, target shooting, singing, ballet and staying fit.
