7 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September Is Infant Mortality Awareness Month Department of Health Recommends Healthy Steps to Help Protect Infants September is National Infant Mortality Awareness Month. Infant mortality is the death of a baby who is less than one year old. Jinlene Chan, M.D., M.P.H., Health Officer for Anne Arundel County, says, While it does not make the headlines every day, the fact is that infants die at a higher rate here than in most other industrialized countries. Many of these deaths are preventable. In 2013, there were 5.6 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in Anne Arundel County for all races. The rate was 10.5 infant deaths per 1,000 live births for black infants in Anne Arundel County. Preterm birth (birth at less than 37 weeks) and low birth weight (5.5 pounds or less) are the leading causes of death among infants in the County. Pregnant women and women wishing to become pregnant can take these steps to help protect their babies: Stop using tobacco, alcohol and drugs. Avoid secondhand smoke. Eat a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Drink plenty of fluids. Take a multivitamin daily that contains at least 400 mcg (micrograms) of folic acid. Achieve or maintain a healthy weight. Manage chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma. Speak with your prenatal care provider about any questions or concerns that you have. The Department of Health offers free Healthy Pregnancy and Baby Care Kits to County residents. To order the free kits, or for more information about having a healthy pregnancy and baby, Anne Arundel County residents can visit August 27, 2015 # # # Media Contact: Elin Jones, Public Information Director, , hdjones@aacounty.org Anne Arundel County Healthy Babies * 3 Harry S.
