This is update # 4 on NRN-Canada s programs and activities NRN-Canada convention and Annual General Meeting NCC meeting scheduled on March 1 st, 2014 has decided to have our AGM 2014 in Vancouver, BC and a local organization NCSBC is hosting our AGM. One day event will be held on Saturday August 9, 2014 at Mirage Banquet Hall, Avenue # Suit 201, Surrey, BC V3S 1Z2, Phone: (604) A board meeting assigned Western VP to coordinate the AGM in Vancouver. After the series of consultations, VP created a task force as follows to organize the event. 1. NRN-Canada life member Mr. Anil Pradhan, 2. Western VP, Co-Chair 3. NCSBC s Mr. Khem Dahal, Co-Chair 4. Open University Nepal (OUN) NRN-Canada, Advisor and Dr. Mohammad Ally, Representative of Athabasca University had a conference call meeting to get an update of OUN. Anil mentioned about meeting with Dr. Pramod Dhakal, who is trying his best to implement and run OUN in Nepal very soon. 2. Model Village Development Program NCC member Dr. Betman Bhandari informed that ENPHO has completed their work in Surkhet and declared Surkhet as an Open Defecation Free (ODF) zone. NRN-Canada has provided a financial support to ENPHO. 3. Nepal Library Project Nepal Library Project is an ongoing project of NRN-Canada. Please support! 4. New logo of NRN-Canada After the registration of NRNA in Nepal, NRNA issued a note to all NRN in 65 countries to change their logo into a new logo and Canada got a new one. Old Logo New Logo
2 General NRN-Canada Activities: 1. NRN-Canada fulfillment with their Ambassador, Advisers and Committees NCC board meeting has appointed Mr. Sudarshan Gautam as a brand Ambassador of NRN- Canada. NRN-Canada team attended a Convention The 43 members of NRN-Canada had shown their interest to participate on the 6 th NRNA Global Convention that held in Nepal on Oct 19-22, 2013 but actually 22 members attended and voted to make a history of NRNA. NRN-Canada led the team along with VPs,, NCC member, life and general members. During the convention, our participants met with several dignitaries and business personalities of Nepal.
3 General NRN-Canada met with the Honorary Consul General of Canada to Nepal at his office to find out the services that offered from his office. 3. NRN-Canada and Sahitya Samaj honoured Mr. Modnath Prashit NRN-Canada Language and Literature Committee and Sahitya Samaj, Canada jointly organized a felicitation program to honor famous author and former Education Minister Mr. Modnath Prashit and his wife Ms. Kabita Paudel in on February 22, A large number of Nepalese living in an around GTA area attended the program. of NRN- Canada Mr. Birendra Lams al welcomed everyone to the event. A felicitation signed by NRN- Canada VP Mr. Ramhari Khadka and General Tulsi Sapkota was presented to Mr. Prashrit. During the occasion, Mr. Prashit s wife and writer Kabita Poudel was also honored. Mr. Mukti Gautam, of Sahitya Samaj chaired the function and Mr. Ramesh Thapa was the master of the ceremony. During the function, DIYALO magazine, published by the Nepalese Community Network of Canada (NCNC) was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Mr. Modnath Prashrit.

An interaction program between NRN-Canada and the Nepalese Embassy An interaction program between NRN-Canada delegates and Embassy of Nepal in Canada was held on Wednesday Feb 19, We are grateful to Nepalese Embassy for taking initiation to communicate and showing the interest to work closely with the community organizations and the community members. NRN-Canada would also like thank all delegates for their time to travel from GTA to Ottawa and making the program successful and memorable. This interaction program brought us together for the benefit of Nepalese living in Canada and the Embassy of Nepal. 5 General 5. NRN-Canada raised a fund for Punam Giri and Anish Rai NRN-Canada opened their online paypal account to collect donations for an emergency fund to Late Punam Giri s funeral. Within a week, more than $20,000 was donated from across Canada. Please read page 8 for the details of the donations and the expenses. NRN-Canada also appealed to save a life of Anish Khaling Rai, who is sentenced for a death penalty in UAE. To pay a blood money, NRN-Canada raised $5200 and transferred all money to NRNA Emergency Fund. Special thanks to and Nepalese for their generous donations. 6. NRN-Canada celebrated 104 th International Women s Day in Ottawa NRN-Canada Women and Children Affairs celebrated 104 th International Women s Day in Ottawa at the premise of Nepalese Embassy on Sunday March 9 th, 2014 with the support of Embassy of Nepal and local organizations. Thanks to NRN-Canada Adviser Ms. Radha Basynat for taking this initiation to organize the event to empower and educate women. More than 40 women attended the ceremony. Dr. Ishara Mahat chaired the program and Mrs. Rita Poudyel (Wife of an Acting Ambassador) was a special guest of the function. NRN-Canada Women and Children Affairs also spoke about the activities of NRN-Canada and Women and Children Affairs since NRN-Canada initiated one on one meeting with all organizations NRN-Canada took an initiation to communicate with all local organizations to work together to the benefit of community and it started with the Canadian Newa Guthi (CNG). On March 2 nd, 2014 NRN-Canada and General met with the Canadian Newa Guthi (CNG) s Mr. Prakash Lal Pradhan and General Mr. Bimal Man Shrestha in. Both parties agreed to work together for the local benefit and unity of the community. NRN-Canada will join CNG on their fifth Free Tax filing to the newcomers and low income families. NRN-Canada and General met with the Executive members of Nepalese Canadian Heritage Centre (NCHC) in on March 9, NCHC s Mr. Bishnu Parajuli, Mr. Ravi Sapkota, Mr. Laxman Shrestha and Mr. Okendra Budhathoki were presente at the meeting. NRN-Canada emphasized on their interest to work together to build a community centre including a temple in GTA that is initiated by NCHC. NRN-Canad requested to become an associate membership to NCHC Activities of the Organizational Canadian New Guthi organized several functions in GTA from September 2013 to February CNG was established in to promote the Newari culture and celebrate the traditions and address various social issues in the community. On September 21, 2013, CNG opened their Chapter and conducted their meetings to focus on the potential community based health and fitness training, interaction program on health issues. Similarly, CNG celebrated 9th Annual Mha Puja and New Nepal Sambat 1134 on November 3rd, 2013 in, Ontario.
6 General On November 23 rd, 2013, CNG organized an informational session on Osteoporosis disease. It was conducted by the chapter. On December 28 th, 2013, CNG- chapter celebrated Yomari Punhi in Scarborough, Ontario for the first time.
7 General The function was celebrated at Mr. Naresh Tamrakar s residence in, a public relation officer of Canadian Newa Guthi. Speaking at the program, Mr. Bimal Man Shrestha, General -CNG said that it was organized specially to preserve Newari culture and its importance for next generation. He also informed that this is the first time CNG has organized such kind of program in and it will be continued in coming years. Many children were also informed about how importance is this in term of nutrition we can get from this food and in terms of season on which it is celebrated in Newari community. This festival resembles with Halloween culture of North America as children go around the neighbourhood for collecting YOMARI and other stuffs like candies by singing and dancing Newari traditional songs in a group, he added. Recipe and cooking YOMARI were also demonstrated to the new generation of the community during the program. In February 2014, CNG organized a welcome program for the newcomers.
8 General At function, Mr. Prakash Lal Pradhan, a of CNG welcomed all newcomers. He highlighted the policies and program of CNG. Nepalese Community Society of (NCSC) celebrated a Sarsowti Puja on February 8, 2014 in. Nepalese Community Association (CNCA) organized and celebrated several functions in, Alberta. On November 4, 2013, CNCA celebrated Mha puja and Deusi/Bhailo program. On December 28, 2013, the association celebrated Lhosar and New Year. As a community organization, CNCA did a volunteering on January 1 and 2, 2014 in Casino as part of the fund raising campaign. Nepalese Canadian Society of (NECASE) celebrated a Family Day with seniors on Monday February 17 th, 2014 at NECASE hall. The event helped to know each other and welcomed newcomer s family in. This function was coordinated by Ms. Jaya Corson Jha. On Jan 18, 2014 Magar Association of Canada (MAC) organized their annual event Maghesakranti Sanjh in at Royal Banquet Hall. More than 300 members of the GTA community participated to enjoy the cultural program. A cultural program was performed by local talents. NRN Canada Mr. chaired the function as a chief guest. He wished the community people on the occasion of Maghe Sakranti. Other participants were Vice- Mr., General Tulsi P Sapkota, Mr. Dipak Gautam and NCC member - Mr., Mr. Tulsi Paudel and Mr. Rishi Ram Tiwari on behalf of NRN Canada. On February 9 th, 2014 the Nepalese Janajati Association of Canada (NJAC) conducted a program that promoted the Nepalese businesses in GTA and close relationship with consumers and service orientated business personalities. The workshop theme was to promote FIRE (Finance, Insurance and Real Estate). On March 9 th, 2014, Nepalese Canadian Community Services (NCCS) conducted their AGM in. The AGM selected a new team to lead the organization for The AGM also amended a new article on by-laws that allowed Mr. Anjani Bhattarai, a Chairman of Board of Directors and Mr. Gopal Bhandari as a new of the organization. Both of them are life members of NRN-Canada. NRN-Canada would like to congratulate both of them and we are looking forward to work with them closely. Death of Nepali in Nepali community was deeply shocked by the unfortunate news that one of our community members, Ms. Punam Giri passed away on January 02, She was living in and was working as a full time caregiver. According to the doctor s report Ms. Punam Giri had heart-attack while she was sleeping at her apartment, which was provided her by the employer. After the post mortem, her dead body has been taken care by the hospital. Late Punam Giri has a daughter, who is pursuing her postsecondary education in New Delhi, India. As she was willing to come to Canada to see her late mother, NRN Canada and NCWA sponsored through the support of Barrister Mr. Atul Subedi and The Embassy of Nepal in Canada. At this critical situation NRN Canada and Nepalese Community Organizations in Greater Area collectively appealed with the Nepalese community people for financial support needed for the process of document in order to bring the one and only daughter of Late Punam Giri to Canada and complete her funeral and all required legal process.
9 General Emergency Fund Raising Committee was formed to handle all the required processes for the funeral. The committee members were: Mr. Gopal Bhandari - Mr. Ramesh Kumar Prasai - Member (, NCCS) Mr. - Member (, NRN-Canada) Mrs. Sushila Bhandari - Member (, NCWA) Ms. Radhika Kharel - Member Fund Raising Committee informed about the post funeral situation to all followed by an important community meeting on Saturday 25 Jan, 2014 from 02:00 pm 05:00 pm at 120 Eglinton Avenue East, Suite # 707. The meeting was called by NRN Canada and endorsed by all community organizations in Greater Area (GTA). It was attended by 33 individuals including Honorary Nepalese Consulate General Dr. Kunjar Mani Sharma, Lawyer Mr. Atul Subedi, representatives of NRN-Canada and other community organizations, daughter of Late Giri, Ms. Nancy Gautam and community members. The meeting updated the community about the total fund raised. It also updated about the final total expenses that occurred to manage the funeral of Late Giri. The detail of the total collected donation and the expenses is as mentioned below: 1. Total collected amount as donation (Through PayPal + Cash): CAD$ 20,901. (Twenty Thousand Nine Hundred One Only) 2. Total expenses (Two-way Airfare for Nancy Gautam, Visa Fees & Funeral Cost): CAD$ 7, (Seven Thousand Six Hundred Thirty Two and Ninety Cents Only) 3. Total Remaining Amount: CAD$ 13, (Thirteen Thousand Two Hundred Sixty Eight & Ten Cents) NRN Canada Mr. summarized the participants about the incident, initiatives taken by NRN Canada, Community organizations and individuals to raise fund in the community and further legal steps that can be taken to support the family of Late Giri. After a meaningful discussion among the participants, the meeting has mandated the Fund Raising Committee to decide how to manage the remaining amount Meeting of Funeral Fund Raising Committee held on Sunday 9th Feb at 276 Hiawatha Rd. to discuss on how the collected fund can be properly utilized in the best interest of Nepalese Community and the family member of Late Giri. The meeting has decided as follows: 1. The committee members along with Ms. Nancy Gautam passed a vote of thanks to all the community members who have generously donated to complete the funerals of Late Giri in. 2. The meeting decided to help Ms. Nancy Gautam with the amount of CAD $ (Six Thousand Two Hundreds Seventy Nine and One Cent Canadian Dollar) to support her studies in India. The committee will transfer money to the bank account of Ms. Nancy Gautam upon her return to Nepal within the period of one month from the day of this meeting. 3. Ms. Nancy Gautam consented to the fund raising committee to utilize the rest of the amount CAD $ (Six Thousand Two Hundreds Seventy Nine and One Cent Canadian Dollar) to initiate Community Emergency Fund in GTA. The fund will be made in the memory of late Punam Giri.

The fund will be used in the emergency situation for Nepalese community people within Canada and required policies and operational procedure will be finalized by the meeting of Nepalese community organizations within Canada and will be duly notified to all the Nepalese community members by . This meeting was attended by all committee members and Ms. Nancy Gautam. Community news Everest Shito-Ryu Karate After the establishment of Everest Shito-Ryu Karate in Milton in 2011 by a Master Surendra Lal Shrestha, 2 nd runner up of World Karate Championship, Japan 2000, this institute had won lots of medals in the provincial level. Canadian Newa Guthi (CNG) has supported to open their class from February Everest Shito-Ryu Karate is located inside of Shopper World Mall in with the help of another Nepalese Instructor Dhan Bahadur Shrestha. On September 29 th, 2013, their 5 students were able to secure the 7 medals: Manish Devkota (Gold medal on Kumite), Sahan Shrestha (Bronze medal on Kumite), Ghirmey Lama (Silver medal on Kumite; Bronze medal on Kata), Kshitij Gyawali (Silver medal on Kumite; Bronze medal on Kata), Sarina Gyawali (Bronze medal on Kumite), Everest Karate did it again On December 8 th, 2013, Everest karate kids participated in Karate Championship. Altogether 6 medals won by four participants. In 7-8 age group, Pasang Sherpa won Gold medal in Kumite and Silver medal in Kata; in 9-10 age group, Chrischal Dhungana won Bronze medal in Kata; in age group, Debendra Sapkota won Silver in Kata and in age group, Gaurav Tiwari won Gold medal in Kumite and Sliver medal in Kata. In Karate, people use thier own skills and utilize it in a maximum level for self-defense without any weapon. This popular sports need a high level of discipline to perform well from the beginning of the training. 8 Gold and more for Everest Shito-Ryu in Seiwa Kai Open Tournament Everest Shito-Ryu Karate (supported by CNG) won 8 Gold medals and 7 Silver medals in Seiwa Kai Open Tournament on 16 th Feb, 2014 in Hamilton, Ontario. This is the 3 rd participation in official tournament and one further steps of successes of Everest Shito-Ryu Karate in Karate training since medals: 4 Gold in Kumite, 3 Gold in Kata, 1 Gold in Novic Team Kata, 3 Sliver in Kumite and 4 Silver in Kata scored in the tournament. Below are the participants on behalf of Everest Shito-Ryu who won the medals and able to be a proud of Nepali community.

12 General 50 th International Human Rights On Dec 8, 2013 NRN- was invited as a Chief Guest at the 50 th International Human Rights. The program was organized in by the community and human rights activist Mr. Govinda Shiwakoti. All participants discussed about the Human rights situation in Nepal and the Globe. Photo Exhibition On Jan 18, 2014, a solo photo exhibition of Artist Surendra Lawoti was organized in. Trucker s Night Nepalese Canadian Trucker s Association (NCTA) organized an event which was divided into two phases.the first phase program was the interaction program of NCTA among Canadian government representatives, Nepalese associations and Trucker's association members which can be described as a milestone in the history of NCTA towards an initiation of relationship with the Government of Canada and political parties. The second phase of the program was cultural program. The Honorable Minister of State (Sport) Bal Gosal, Honorable M.P. Kyle Seeback and Honorable M.P. Parm Gill addressed the program. of NRN Canada Mr. was the guest in the program and he addressed the program as well. of NCNC Mr. Bal Chandra Shrestha, of Canadian Newa Guthi Mr. Prakash Lal Pradhan, and the representatives of Sherpa Sangh, NJAC, MAC and Concern Nepal were also the guests in the program. The other participants from NRN Canada were Mr. Tulsi P Sapkota (General ), (NCC Member), Mr. (NCC member), Mr. Tulsi Paudel (NCC member) and Mr. Rishi Ram Tiwari (NCC Member). Mr. N B Tandan received the recognition letter from the Honorable Minister of State (Sport). In the second phase Hon. Consular General of Nepal to USA Mr.Prem Raja Mahat was the chief artist. The local talented artists Ram Kaji Moktan, Buddhi Sagar Basyal and Tsring Lama also performed at the show and Hari Siwakoti assisted in sound and media.
13 General Interaction Program in Kitchener/Waterloo On Feb 16, 2014, the community of Kitchener/Waterloo invited NRN-Canada to answer on some of their queries. Nepali Topi Event Nepali Literary Society organized 2nd Nepali Topi Event to honor Prof. Dr. Khagendra Luitel in. With the representation from various organizations, the event was successfully organized. The theme inspired Dr. Luitel to spread this event to other parts of the globe and tell NRN how the Canadian Nepalese are organizing Topi event for their feelings and adorations towards the nationality. Basanta Panchami event was celebrated before the Topi event. NRN Canada General Tulsi Sapkota, and NCC Member participated at the function. Lhosar On March 1 st, 2014, United Sherpa Association Canada (USA-C) celebrated a Lhosar program in. More than 200 peoples from the GTA community were participated at the function. Mr. Dilip Poudel, an acting Ambassador of Nepal to Canada was a chief guest and NRN-Canada was the speaker at function. Both of them emphasized to change a hand-written passport to Machine Readable Passport (MRP) by November 24, 2015.
14 General 104 th International Women s Day Nepalese Canadian Women s Association (NCWA) celebrated 104 th International Women s day in, Ontario on March 8 th, Member of Parliament from Pickering, Ontario Honorouble Chisu was a chief guest and NRN-Canada was an honourable guest of the function. In short period, NCWA has done lots of works for the community and especially for the women resided in GTA. Mrs. Sushila Bhandari, of NCWA thanked everyone for participating and celebrating the event together. Shiva-Ratri Nepalese Canadian Heritage Centre (NCHC) celebrated a Shiva-Ratri function at the resident of Kedar Basnet in Malton,. The Ganesh idol is located at his residence to do puja on the first Sunday of every month. NCHC is planning to establish a temple and community centre to serve the community in GTA. Upcoming Events and Activities 1. NRN-Canada is organizing a networking event for Canadian, a tea reception on Nepali New Year, Nepali Calendar with all information of associate organizations, a business diary in April 2. The fifth annual Nepali Film Festival will be launched on Friday March 21 st, 2014 at the Carlton Cinema and a full day of festival will be held the following day, 22nd of March at the Inns Town Hall of University of (2 Sussex Avenue, ). For details, please visit 3. Nepalese Janajati Association, Canada is planning to organize a Nepali New Year party on Saturday April 12, 2014 with a popular singer Dhiraj Rai. 4. AGM of Canadian Newa Guthi will be held on April 12, 2014 in Bharat Mata Mandir. CNG is organizing several Free Tax filing events in March 2014 in GTA 5. The Nepalese Canadian Society of BC (NCSBC) is participating on their annual event Surrey Fusion Festival on July 21 and 22, CNCA is organizing AGM and Nepali New Year party on April 12, 2014 NRNA s News NRNA had organized a health camp on "Uterine prolapse project", on the occasion of 104th International Women's Day in Bodhe Barsain, Saptari (March 1 and 2, 2014). This health camp was sponsored by "Nari Nikunj, Moscow" (NRNA Russia). Patients were checked and screened by professional Medical team (Dr. Mohan Chandra Regmi, Dr. Ajay Agrawal, Dr. Anamika Das from B.P.Koirala memorial Hospital, Dharan; Dr. Shiv Shankar, Dr. Kavita Shah - from Phul Kumari Memorial Hospital, Siraha; Dr. Jaya Ram K.C. from Prasuti Griha, Kathmandu and full nurse s team. The health post of Bodhe Barshain along with it's staffs also helped during the camp. WOREC Nepal's team from Lahan and Udayapur also participated in the health camp. They held an awareness program - health mela. of constitutional assembly - Dr. Birendra Mahato, Ms. Laxmi Kumari Chaudhary, Surendra Prasad Yadhav chief of Janswastha Karyalaya - Dr. Bijaya Kumar Jha, of the VDC and other dignatories participated at the health camp.
15 General A total of 210 patients were screened and distributed free medicines. 27 patients among them are diagnosed to be operated.
