10 8 UPMC THEORY IN ACTION Building a leading transplant center in Italy: cross-continental partnership meets local needs and drives economic growth Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad Alta Specializzazione (ISMETT), a public-private partnership between the Cervello and Civico hospitals of Palermo and the Region of Sicily, was established to meet the area s urgent need for a comprehensive hospital and transplantation center. With UPMC s on-the-ground support and expertise, ISMETT was conceived, designed and built into a leading European health and research center, providing transplantations and other care to patients in their home region. Today, the center provides clinical excellence, supports leading research and serves as a major economic driver for Sicily. Bringing world-class cancer treatments to patients in southeast Ireland: UPMC collaborates to provide care closer to home To meet the need for advanced cancer treatment in rural southeast Ireland, UPMC entered into a joint venture with a local health care group to build an outpatient radiation oncology center. The center UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre in Waterford became part of the UPMC CancerCenter, an integrated network of comprehensive care facilities. As a result of the collaboration, the Cancer Centre now offers the most advanced radiation therapy treatments available and has set a precedent in Ireland for providing world-class cancer care to patients closer to their homes. Meeting the challenges of health care reform in Singapore: Asian American Medical Group partners with UPMC to deliver quality organ transplantation Following a shift toward hospital privatization and responding to demands to improve the quality of patient care, Singapore-based Asian American Medical Group (AAMG), one of Asia s foremost liver and gastrointestinal disease centers, engaged UPMC in a strategic collaboration. With UPMC s support, AAMG established the Comprehensive Transplant Centre (CTC), an intensive care until (ICU) for immunosuppressed patients, and a second-opinion clinical diagnosis process and pathology program, which adopted more innovative surgical procedures, advanced medical education and ensured that it was delivering the best evidencebased medicine.

11 READ THE FULL CASE STUDIES AT Improving emergency medical care for patients in Qatar: UPMC partners with Hamad Medical Corporation to establish a trauma center of excellence Facing growing demands from an increasingly diverse patient base, Qatar s Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) partnered with UPMC to improve the quality of emergency medical care in the country. The partnership focused on successfully creating a comprehensive, integrated emergency department and establishing a Level 1 trauma center. It also resulted in implementation of an integrated medical records and documentation system, development of new operational and managerial protocols and establishment of several educational programs. Today, HMC manages the trauma system independently, helping Qatar set the standard for emergency care in the Middle East. Providing world-class cancer care to patients in Italy: UPMC partners with San Pietro Fatebenefratelli Hospital to develop an advanced radiosurgery center of excellence San Pietro Fatebenefratelli Hospital, a private hospital in Rome, recognized the need to provide advanced cancer care for patients in the region, but faced significant operational challenges. Known for providing world-class care in Italy, UPMC was asked to partner with San Pietro to develop, manage and operate an advanced radiosurgery Center of Excellence. Once opened, the center became the first in region to offer advanced therapies including stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), a precisely-delivered, high-dose radiation used to treat inoperable tumors. San Pietro redefined cancer care in the region, giving patients greater access to innovative and effective treatments close to home. Sharing UPMC s cancer expertise to improve patient outcomes in China: establishment of a second-opinion pathology consultation service China experiences some of the highest rates of cancer in the world, and the experts there agreed that improving the quality of pathology services through collaboration was integral to countering this serious health threat. KingMed Diagnostics, the largest medical diagnostic laboratory in China, partnered with UPMC to provide remote, second-opinion pathology consultations and bring world-class expertise to rural areas across the country. The partnership resulted in enhanced cancer diagnoses, better guiding clinical treatment teams and improving cancer care outcomes. Today, UPMC and KingMed are working to increase the number of consultations, improve diagnostic accuracy and optimize care for more patients.
