2 FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear future students, At the dawn of the academic year, the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya will be in the midst of implementing the strategic plans for its future. Over the past sixteen years, our schools and research institutes have won international recognition while our alumni have taken impressive steps toward changing the face of Israeli society. In a recent survey conducted by the Council for Higher Education on student satisfaction throughout Israeli academia, IDC Herzliya was ranked number one in sixteen out of the twenty categories. Our schools of law and computer science ranked number one in income by alumni and the school of business was ranked number two. We will be building upon these accomplishments and expanding our academic programs and activities to exciting new heights. The members of the ninth class of the Raphael Recanati International School will be joining one of the leading academic institutions in Israel. An era of renewal is taking shape within Israeli society. Joining IDC Herzliya now means being a part of this fascinating process, which will infuse a commitment to constitutional and governmental reform as well as economic growth; will address the challenges presented by new media technology; and will reevaluate Israel s diplomatic strategy and policies as well as the country s social and moral agenda all of which are intrinsic to our academic mission. We already see a number of our graduates gaining leading positions in key areas of the country, who are committed to making Israel a better place to live. IDC Herzliya has led this academic avant-garde movement since its inception. We combine the study of theory with real-world experience. Our educational method is based on an interdisciplinary approach, information technology and openness to the international horizon. Our outlook, which is rooted in the concepts of liberty and responsibility, emphasizes initiative and leadership alongside community service. International students will benefit from this focus in addition to an all-encompassing introduction to the State of Israel and its scenery, history and roots. Next year IDC will have twelve hundred students from sixty-three countries at the Raphael Recanati International School. I am convinced that everyone who joins us from abroad will obtain an excellent education and will also develop meaningful friendships with students from Israel and dozens of other countries an experience that will accompany them for the rest of their lives. 4 VALUES FOR A NEW ISRAEL There were no private educational institutions of significance in Israel until 1994, when IDC Herzliya was founded. Modeled on distinguished small colleges in the United States, IDC Herzliya is a non-profit corporate entity which is not subsidized by the government and is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in education and research. Its founders aimed to create an Israeli university for the third millennium a university where personal achievement goes hand in hand with social responsibility. As a new immigrant serving in Israel through Garin T zabar I was grateful that IDC accepted international students with grades from abroad. 8 INSTITUTE FOR POLICY AND STRATEGY (IPS) THE HERZLIYA CONFERENCE SERIES The Herzliya Conference on The Balance of Israel s National Strength and Security is unique among the plethora of Israeli and international conferences. The very concept of strength (hosen in Hebrew meaning strength, endurance, and resilience) is the central theme of all the Conferences and has become a widely used coin of expression in public discourse and in many official declarations. Since its inception, the Herzliya Conference has become the annual summit meeting of the most influential Israeli and international leaders. Participants at the Conference include: government officials, Knesset members and ministers, senior defense officials, leaders of the Israeli business community, senior academicians, media representatives from Israel and abroad, representatives from various leading Jewish organizations in the Diaspora, dignitaries from abroad and the diplomatic corps in Israel. The Herzliya Conference is a year-long work cycle which includes the following three consecutive stages: preliminary research and analysis conducted by task forces and commissioned experts; the Conference where major policy statements and initiatives are delivered, followed by debate on the issues and on the reports presented by the task forces. An executive summary is then presented to key policymakers, summarizing the Conference s proceedings, findings, and major policy recommendations. 9 THE INTERNATIONAL POLICY INSTITUTE FOR COUNTER-TERRORISM (ICT) The International Policy Institute for Counter-Terrorism (ICT) is the leading academic institute for counter-terrorism in the world, facilitating international cooperation in the global struggle against terrorism. ICT is an independent think tank providing expertise in terrorism, counter-terrorism, homeland security, threat vulnerability and risk assessment, intelligence analysis and national security and defense policy. ICT holds a World Summit for Counter-Terrorism which is one of the most influential events in the field of counter-terrorism today. The conference is a vital opportunity for high-profile experts from a diverse background of disciplines to establish professional relationships and serves as a platform for the formation of international cooperation. Speakers and participants at our previous conferences have included current and former ministers, members of parliament, heads of security agencies and police departments, first responders, academics, professional experts in the field of counterterrorism, jurists, businessmen and students. ICT also serves as a joint forum for international policymakers and scholars to share information and expertise through research papers, situation reports and academic publications for worldwide distribution. A number of international seminars, workshops and conferences are organized monthly by ICT to discuss and educate on global and regional issues.
