3 The clever connection When uing the OK coupling for haft connection, you take advantage of our powerful oil injection method. Preparation of the haft i imple. No keyway to machine, no taper and no thrut ring. When mounting the OK coupling, a thin inner leeve with a tapered outer diameter lide onto the haft. thick outer leeve with a matching tapered inner urface fit onto the inner leeve. Ordinary mineral oil i then injected between the leeve. built-in hydraulic jack drive the outer leeve up the taper of the inner leeve. When the outer leeve ha reached it final poition an interference fit i created jut a if the outer leeve had been heated and hrunk on. But no heat i required, and the coupling can be removed a eaily a it wa mounted. Thi powerful ue of friction enable the OK coupling to tranmit torque and axial load over the entire area of the haft. There are no tre raier at the keyway. nd no fretting when high hock or revering load exit. Make it the clever way! Let the OK coupling work for you. You ll ave both time and money! 3

4 The OK coupling explained With the OKC and OKF coupling SKF preent benefit impoible to achieve with traditional coupling. The implicity of mounting and dimounting and the high torque tranmiion capacity characteried by the OK coupling are achieved uing a powerful friction joint. The five tage below illutrate the principle. Up to 2011 more than coupling have been delivered for ue in many variou application. The OKC coupling (ee figure 1 on page 5) ha been on the market ince the early 40. OKC coupling are the tandard with many well-known controllable pitch propeller manufacturer in the world, but are alo ued for other application uch a rolling mill, pump, dieel engine, etc. The OKCS coupling evolved from a pecial deign for engine builder where the torque requirement were le tringent compared to the haft diameter. The OKF coupling (ee figure 2 on page 5) wa developed to create a imple connection between a cylindrical haft and engine or gearboxe having a flanged at the thrut haft. The OKF coupling i available with or without a built-in tool for mounting/ dimounting. Since the coupling i mounted on a cylindrical haft and not fixed by keyway, it can eaily be adjuted axially and rotated to the deired poition. The OK coupling higher torque capacity i obtained due to the entire contact urface tranmitting torque a oppoed to conventional coupling. Since there i no need for keyway, the dimenion of the haft and the coupling can be reduced. The OK coupling aure a implified mounting and dimounting procedure. Very large coupling, which previouly could only be hrunk on after heating, can now be aembled cold with the OK method. Typical intallation with OKC and OKF for a propeller haft line. nd thi i what happen The coupling i put into poition. High preure injector are connected to, and a low preure to the hydraulic chamber B. 2. Oil i injected into under high preure, building up an oil film between the inner and outer leeve, eliminating metallic contact and reducing friction force. 3. When there i a good oil film between the leeve, oil leak out at the thick end of the inner leeve. Oil i pumped into B and the outer leeve tart moving up the taper. Oil i continuouly injected between the leeve (), in order to avoid metallic contact. B B 4. The coupling ha reached it final poition when the outer diameter of the coupling ha grown by a predetermined value. The oil pump i topped, but preure in B mut remain. Preure in i releaed. B 5. When oil ha drained from the contact urface of the two leeve and friction ha been retored, low preure B i releaed. ll oil connection are plugged. The expoed part of the coupling hould be covered with a rut preventive and the coupling i ready for year of trouble-free operation. 4

14 Tailor-made OK coupling Beide tandard erie of OK coupling, SKF Coupling Sytem deign and manufacture tailor-made OK coupling for haft diameter from 100 mm and up. 15 Power tranmiion capacity Torque tranmitted by the OKC coupling i directly proportional to the urface preure between the inner leeve of the coupling and the haft after the outer leeve ha been driven up axially. The neceary driveup, which i reached when the diameter of the outer leeve ha increaed by dimenion D for OKC and OKCS coupling, and the tated drive-up length for OKF coupling given in the table, will enure a preure of 120 N/mm 2 for OKC coupling, and 100 N/mm 2 for OKF coupling. 17 Hollow haft for OKC coupling The outer leeve mut be driven further up with hollow haft than with olid one if the ame preure and power tranmiion capacity are to be achieved. The haft mut alo be reinforced by mean of leeve hrunk into rece turned beneath the coupling eating. Thi will prevent the tree, which arie in the haft material when the coupling ha been mounted, from exceeding the permiible value. The reinforcement leeve hould be made of toughened teel with a yield point of at leat 850 N/mm 2. The length of the leeve hould be 15 mm longer than the preure length (= mm). The outide diameter, the required interference between the leeve and the haft, and the increae in the drive-up ditance (the reduction in dimenion 3 ) can be obtained from the table below for variou value of diameter ratio d c /d a. Suitable tolerance range for the outide diameter of the leeve and the recee in the haft are IT6 and IT7 repectively. Note that the coupling eating hould be machined to the precribed diameter tolerance only after the reinforcement leeve have been fitted. 22 The Supergrip bolt cut down on downtime t a time when maintenance cot efficiency in heavy indutrie i a make-or-break factor in operational economy, the time-aving Supergrip concept can cut cot dramatically. When you connect your coupling with Supergrip bolt, there i no uncertainty about the length of downtime for removing the bolt. No worry about whether the bolt have jammed or eized in the hole. You know that once the tenion and expanion preure have been releaed, each bolt will lide out a eaily a it went in. Ninety percent reduction of downtime tudy releaed by the Swedih State Power Board on the comparion of individually fitted bolt with Supergrip bolt howed a 90 % reduction in the time required to diaemble and reaemble the coupling of two turbo et (eight coupling). The unit equipped with Supergrip bolt wa reconnected to the power grid 48 hour earlier than the unit with conventional bolt. Total aving were kwh (48 hour x 400 MW). Oil injection method The Supergrip bolt are a uperior olution for connecting rotating flange coupling. Compared with traditional bolt ytem, Supergrip bolt are eaier to intall and remove, take much le time and hold the coupling halve together much more ecurely. The torque in a coupling connected with Supergrip bolt i tranmitted in two way: by hear trength of the expanded bolt in the hole, and by the friction effect at the flange face created by pre-loading the bolt. Deigned pecifically for uch high-torque application a propeller haft, rudder aemblie, turbo generator, the Supergrip bolt offer ignificant advantage. Simplified machining of the hole and no grinding of the bolt. You eliminate re-reaming and re-honing. The bolt are deigned to be inerted and removed with an initial clearance fit. There i no rik of eizure. It i eay to ee why we have delivered ome bolt over the year! For more detailed information and deign recommendation, pleae ak for our Supergrip brochure. 22
