4 TEACHER EDUCATION STREAM (B.A. OR B.Sc.) This dynamic program allows students to complete an undergraduate degree in the arts or sciences while providing an outstanding foundation for later application to a Bachelor of Education program. Students gain practical and theoretical knowledge through course work, participation in workshops, and experiential placements. Trent s B.Ed. program holds a number of direct entry spots for graduates of the Teacher Education Stream. THE TEACHER EDUCATION STREAM HAS THREE MAIN ELEMENTS Completion of the 1 Emphasis in Teacher Education; a series of courses that provides a foundation toward teaching 75 hours of experience-based 2 learning (which students may elect to do outside of the traditional classroom; arrangements are made by student with coordinator approval) Participation in two 3 workshops per year on themes such as environmental education, indigenous knowledge, and social justice, as approved by the School of Education 4 TRENTU.CA
5 EMPHASIS IN TEACHER EDUCATION The Emphasis in Teacher Education provides a strong foundation and competitive advantage to undergraduate students who plan to apply to a Bachelor of Education program and pursue a teaching career. To complete the Emphasis, students must enrol in specific courses throughout their Honours degree at Trent. The Emphasis does not guarantee admission to any Consecutive B.Ed. program; however, the transcripts of students graduating with an Honours degree, who have successfully completed the requirements of the Emphasis, will contain the notation with an Emphasis in Teacher Education. The required courses vary depending on whether the student wishes to pursue a career in the elementary or secondary stream. Required courses can be found online at trentu.ca/education/emphasis.php Students must apply and be accepted to the Teacher Education Stream whereas there is no application to the Emphasis in teacher education; you can register during your first year of studies at Trent. ADDITIONAL EDUCATION-RELATED OPPORTUNITIES IMPACT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM Impact is an innovative program that prepares students to assume a wide variety of leadership roles within the Trent community and beyond. Students can select an area of focus, depending on the type of skills they would like to develop. The stream options include: Foundational Leadership Social Justice Leadership Outdoor and Environmental Leadership Professional Leadership Biishkaa Indigenous Community Leadership TRENT PENPALS PROGRAM This program promotes literacy skills of Peterborough elementary students and provides Trent students with a wonderful mentorship and teaching opportunity. Participants in this program will write and receive letters from an assigned PenPal throughout the year and will also have the opportunity to meet their PenPal during PenPal Fun Days. See Page 12 for Admissions Information SCHOOL OF EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
6 CONSECUTIVE BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (B.Ed.) Trent University is widely respected for teacher certification across Canada and around the world. In the Bachelor of Education program, students will be exposed to recent advances in theory and research and immersed in a community of learners who are driven to make positive change in the world. trentu.ca/education PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS The B.Ed. program provides an exceptional practicum experience for students and prepares them to be educational leaders on a global scale. The unique combination of classroom placements provides the most diverse learning experience possible and the opportunity to build a wider range of personal connections. The practicum/school placements consist of: 90 days of classroom placement in four different classrooms 15 days of placement in a school OR 75 hours in an alternative field experience placement 10 days (equivalent) of one-on-one tutoring in the Supporting Literacy and Learners with Special Needs program Supporting Literacy and Learners with Special Needs This placement involves tutoring two students individually twice a week for approximately three months applying theory to practice. This field experience enables an in-depth view of students who struggle with literacy, developing an awareness of, and ability to reach, students with special needs. Alternative Field Experience Placement This program is designed to provide exposure to a setting other than the normal classroom environment. It is customized to your personal interests and will expand your repertoire of teaching experience beyond the typical classroom setting. Build a school, design educational videos, or work with a specialized educator the choice is yours. Alternative Placement Example: The Learning Garden Through this partnership with The Peterborough Garden Network and Ecology Park, you will gain the knowledge and skills to develop your students eco-literacy and environmental leadership skills. You will participate in garden-based activities at a school-community site and learn about local food sustainability. Alternative Placement Example: Learning from the Land and Indigenous People You will experience land-based activities in Burleigh Falls and Lovesick Lake to personally develop your connection to the environment and an awareness of the Anishinaabe culture. 6 TRENTU.CA
7 Social Justice and Diversity Education How do you create a lesson plan that includes representation of same-sex families and gender-non-conforming individuals? How do you teach literacy in a way that challenges discrimination on the basis of social class? What types of math problems incorporate issues of mental health? The Trent School of Education & Professional Learning addresses questions like these and incorporates social justice and diversity education throughout our program. The Eco-Mentorship Certificate Program A unique collaboration between the School of Education and Camp Kawartha, this elective course integrates outdoor activities and nearby green spaces into your teaching practice. As an Eco-Mentor you are signalling to principals your commitment to environmental education and your ability to use your knowledge to build social capital in the school community. Gaming Lab The School of Education has established a Gaming Lab equipped with an Xbox 360 and Kinect sensor as part of the course Supporting Literacy and Learners with Special Needs at the Intermediate/Senior panel. As a resource, simulation and gaming experiences can have a positive impact on the learning process, enhancing digital literacy, creativity and problem solving. PROGRAM OPTIONS Programs of study are offered for students interested in teaching at the Primary/Junior level (K-Grade 6) and at the Intermediate/Senior level (Grades 7-12). For those pursuing the Intermediate/Senior division, the following teaching subjects are offered at Trent: Biology Chemistry Computer Studies Dramatic Arts English French as a Second Language Geography Health and Physical Education History Indigenous Studies Mathematics Physics Visual Arts Equity Admission Trent University is committed to social justice, and seeks applicants who are under-represented in the teaching and wider community.
