3 Our help in action: Efficiency Hewlett-Packard Hewlett-Packard s (HP) Vice-President of Customer Experience and Strategy, Maurice Fitzgerald, signed a deal with Portsmouth Business School to train its Black Belt champions. This elite group of individuals were hand-picked by HP to study for a specially adapted Master s programme focusing on lean methodology, with the aim of helping them turn HP into an even more responsive and efficient company. The technology company, which employs approximately 304,000 worldwide and operates in more than 170 countries, identified 21 high-flyers to study on the work-based learning programme. The students are now nearing the end of the course and have nothing but praise for the successful partnership that sees them gain a Master s in Strategic Quality Management. Benefits include $200,000 administration cost reduction, 10 per cent increase in sales conversion and a new global pricing policy. I m 56, so I initially questioned whether this course was going to make much difference to my career. But I have to say it s been fascinating to go back to university and learn about the theory that underpins a lot of practical business decisions. Leadership RAF Portsmouth Business School has a significant contract to help train all the Royal Air Force s leaders of tomorrow, in partnership with Cranfield University. Over the next five years, leadership and management experts from both universities with specialist knowledge of the military will develop the abilities of 3,700 RAF personnel a year as part of both initial officer training and senior officer development. Training will focus on international security and defence leadership, together with the RAF s own in-house training programme. The course is designed to refine and broaden the leadership knowledge, analytical ability and self-awareness of middle-ranking officers in the RAF with the ultimate aim of better equipping them for the demands of high-level appointments within the Ministry of Defence and beyond. That we let this contract at a time of significant fiscal constraint shows the Royal Air Force s commitment to developing our people to be among the best leaders of their generation Portsmouth Business School and Cranfield Defence and Security were worthy winners in the face of some stiff competition. 4 Our help in action continued: Leadership NHS A consortia of NHS trusts, city councils and voluntary providers worked with the University of Portsmouth to design a new Master s programme for their leaders in health and wellbeing services. Their aim was to provide relevant leadership training to meet new government targets for quality and cost. Research for the course design identified key barriers to improving patient health and wellbeing, which included lack of integration between different health organisations and lack of confidence by commercial leaders to persuade senior health professionals to change. Shared learning between management students from different health disciplines on this course proved effective in tackling both of these barriers. A great opportunity to gain academic recognition for 20 years of NHS experience. Alison Howett, NHS Commissioner My first year has been both daunting and exciting. The client was not interested in assessment or qualifications, just leading-edge content, which was based on units from our MA Sales Management and included sales planning, customer portfolio analysis, sales performance and motivation. Activities for participants were tailored to the client s development requirements and contexts. Delivery mode included online preparation and tutor-facilitated workshops, which were held at client locations in mainland Europe. Carol Foley, NHS Service Lead Courtesy of Vestas Wind Systems A/S No prior qualifications Vestas Vestas, a global environmental company, chose the University of Portsmouth to deliver a Foundation degree in leadership. This course was tailored to the needs of their shop floor supervisors in their prototype facility on the Isle of Wight, whose roles were being expanded to include set-up of new production lines in a variety of overseas locations. The course we designed blended company-specific requirements of technical skills as well as leadership confidence without difficulty.

5 Cost and fees The cost of the assessment of your current training and development programme, and the design of the academic content will be shared between our organisations. Course fees will then vary depending upon prior accreditation, but will be set at the mid-range level for UK universities please contact us to discuss this. Time commitment Our programmes are part-time, work-based courses, designed to ensure that participants can manage their work, life and study balance. We can tailor delivery to fit the work patterns of your staff. If a qualification is desired, depending on the level of prior accreditation, the programme will last approximately two years, with ten days of face-to-face learning per year and approximately eight hours of self-study each week.
