One way to address this is to reduce the number of tools and skillsets required to manage their IT assets. While many organizations still rely on separate tools to manage their distributed and data center environments, the basic lifecycle management needs of each environment are quite similar. For example, software distribution, patch management, operating system deployment, and hardware and software inventories are required for both environments. Instead of doing all of this manually, Endpoint Manager for Server Automation now enables users to leverage their own best practices to automate the task sequence, freeing up their resources to focus on more critical tasks. Task sequencing Critical for server builds, custom automation to match best practices, and patching operating systems of multi-tiered applications, automated task sequencing is now available through Endpoint Manager for Server Automation. This highly anticipated feature is designed to extend software lifecycle management capabilities beyond distributed devices to data center servers, allowing organizations to save valuable time and reduce operational costs. Task sequencing can be used for critical tasks like server builds (for example, deploying operating systems, configuring settings, deploying simple software, changing the host name and restarting computer) or it can be used for other common system administrator tasks that need to be carefully sequenced. Oftentimes users need to carefully sequence a set of operations across a group of systems. This is especially true for middleware applications running in data centers that have dependencies and relationships between systems. An example would be a banking application that has three web servers, two application servers and two databases that all operate together to provide a service. Examples of typical task sequencing would be operating system patching, in which the user would remove Webserver 1 from a cluster, patch it, restart it and then re-add that server to the cluster. Once this is done, the user can move on to Webserver 2, then move to the application servers and database servers. 3
