IBM Software Cloud service delivery and management Rethink IT. Reinvent business.
2 Cloud service delivery and management Virtually unparalleled change and complexity On this increasingly instrumented, interconnected and intelligent planet, organizations are under tremendous pressure to improve agility and adapt to a rate of change that seems to be increasing every day. This change, and the resulting complexity it generates, is fueled by globalization, new competitors entering marketplaces from other industries, greater regulatory mandates and heightened consumer expectations. It is no wonder that 79 percent of CEOs anticipate even greater complexity ahead, and more than half of CEOs doubt their ability to manage it. 1 Technology React with agility to competitive landscape As a result, executives are looking for ways to satisfy three fundamental imperatives for their organizations: Seize new opportunities ahead of the competition Achieve highly efficient execution while reducing cost and risk Improve precision in business outcomes Technology Execute with reduced risk and cost Achieve desired business outcomes Technology Technology will play a critical role in helping organizations both satisfy these imperatives and embrace change and complexity. In fact, organizations that build greater competencies in managing technology and align IT investments to well-defined business outcomes will be in a better position to help ensure the success of their business. Now, perhaps more than ever, the evolution of IT from a cost center to a center of strategic business value is critical. Figure 1: The challenges facing businesses today
IBM Software 3 Increasing adoption of cloud computing To address these challenging business imperatives, many lineof-business and IT executives are turning to solutions, such as cloud computing, that enable continual optimization of increasingly complex and dynamic business services, processes and relationships. In fact, 60 percent of the CIOs that IBM surveyed said they planned to implement cloud. That s up 45 percent from just two years ago. 2 It s easy to see why. By design, cloud enables the standardization and automation of shared computing resources, speeding the delivery of innovative products and services while fundamentally changing the economics of business infrastructures. Emerging cloud adoption patterns Across industries, IBM is seeing a common set of cloud adoption patterns emerging, such as cloud-enabled data centers being used to cut IT expense and complexity as well as cloud platform services designed to accelerate time to market for cloud services. A new class of cloud service providers has emerged to capitalize on innovative business models, and companies are taking advantage of business solutions on cloud to rapidly access needed applications and services. Figure 2: Businesses are realizing the value of cloud today.
4 Cloud service delivery and management Paramount to cloud success is the need to answer some fundamental questions on how to deliver and manage cloud services: How do we maximize utilization of cloud resources to reduce cost? How do we ensure and improve cloud performance and service quality? How do we scale and accelerate the deployment of cloud workloads? How do we ensure a security-rich and resilient cloud environment? How do we achieve continual delivery for cloud applications? In the past year alone, IBM has helped more than 2,000 clients address these questions and move beyond basic virtualization to automated cloud service delivery and management. IBM SmartCloud Foundation IBM SmartCloud Foundation technologies provide clients with a holistic and proven set of cloud service delivery and management capabilities for implementing successful private, hybrid and public cloud environments. Foundation capabilities provide the fundamental building blocks for smarter cloud solutions, enabling organizations to virtualize, automate and transform service delivery across virtualized infrastructures and achieve agile and cost-effective cloud environments. Organizations of virtually any size can leverage foundation capabilities to easily build and rapidly scale private, public and hybrid cloud environments with practically unparalleled time to market, integration and management. Through the use of IBM SmartCloud Foundation capabilities, organizations gain the visibility, control and automation needed for effective cloud service delivery and management: Visibility to see and understand the business in real time Control to transform and adapt while managing risk Automation to support greater efficiency and quality by standardizing best practices IT organizations can use IBM SmartCloud Foundation offerings to create or enhance an infrastructure as a service (IaaS) cloud model or a platform as a service (PaaS) cloud model.
IBM Software 5 Infrastructure as a service technologies Platform as a service technologies Infrastructure platform Management Availability and and administration performance Security and compliance Usage and accounting Application lifecycle Application resources Application environments Application management Integration Figure 4: The IBM SmartCloud Foundation portfolio delivers solutions across IaaS and PaaS. Infrastructure as a service IBM SmartCloud Foundation solutions provide the critical starting point needed to transform a virtualized infrastructure into a highly automated IaaS. They move the data center beyond virtualization to on demand, cost-effective IT service delivery by providing the following: Infrastructure platform Supports improved utilization, cost and performance of server, storage and networking assets Management and administration Delivers a flexible and automated management command center Availability and performance Holistically sees and understands quality of service metrics and continually improves performance Security and compliance Helps protect cloud services and data from malicious threats and addresses compliance mandates Usage and accounting Understands cloud service and resource usage, effectively managing against financial metrics Platform as a service IBM SmartCloud Foundation offerings also support PaaS implementations by facilitating business agility at a lower cost through agile deployment of applications. Application lifecycle Collaboratively develops applications to support predictive and error-free deployment Application resources Simplifies cloud application delivery by leveraging shared services Application environments Accelerates application delivery with purpose-built services Application management Optimizes the deployment and management of third-party and in-house applications Integration Manages and integrates traditional, private and public services on a standards-based platform These IaaS and PaaS capabilities also allow service providers to put in place the foundational components needed to capitalize on new revenue opportunities, such as carrier class software, as a service to their clients.
6 Cloud service delivery and management The IBM SmartCloud Foundation portfolio proven solutions for private, public and hybrid clouds IBM cloud solutions are proven in the marketplace. As a case in point, we helped a transaction services client slash server provisioning times and speed development cycles to put new features and enhancements in the hands of customers more rapidly. The client was responsible for more than 50,000 physical and virtual servers located in more than a dozen data centers. These servers include nearly 9,000 development servers serving tens of thousands of internal application developers. This massive development team is responsible for improving customer experiences through thousands of new development initiatives annually. Unfortunately, these developers have historically had to wait as long as a month and a half to receive a provisioned server they had requested a natural symptom of dealing with physical infrastructures. The client was able to build an internal cloud using IBM software solutions, enabling self-service request, automated provisioning and internal chargeback capabilities while at the same time boosting utilization rates and improving operational efficiencies. And the client cut server provisioning times from more than 40 days to less than a half-hour. Why IBM? Cloud computing can enable organizations to provide reliable, on demand services in a flexible and affordable manner offering the benefits of open standards, scalable systems and serviceoriented architecture. With these benefits also come new complexities that must be properly managed. IBM offers the solutions and expertise to retool the world s intelligent global infrastructure to accelerate innovation, connect people, provide an effective and creative service delivery model, and leverage a global network of skills and technology. IBM s global breadth and depth of experience in infrastructure, applications, processes and information spans virtually all technology platforms. IBM has joined more than 250 leading cloud organizations to form the new Cloud Standards Customer Council (CSCC), which is managed by Object Management Group. IBM is inviting all of its users to participate in the CSCC and work together in addressing the challenges faced while implementing cloud computing. IBM has a depth of knowledge and experience in industryspecific business processes. IBM is a trusted source of innovation that is here to stay with the track record to build and deliver highly secure and resilient solutions. IBM has real-world implementation experience on rapid service innovation with clients, with service providers and as a service provider itself.
