The benefits of cloud environments are not in question. However, as more and more environments are moving toward virtualization, one common challenge has emerged how to achieve the necessary visibility and control of a virtual infrastructure when managing a private cloud. To realize true cost savings from a virtualization or cloud investment, users must be able to run virtual machines densely enough to maximize consolidation, yet be assured that their workloads are still running as well as they were before being virtualized with plenty of room for expansion. To gain a complete understanding of resource trends and needs, capacity management must be integrated with resource management. Enter IBM SmartCloud Monitoring, the first tool designed to monitor the health and performance of a private cloud infrastructure, tracking the availability of shared resources on the host at the same time as it tracks the consumption of those resources by individual workloads.

This solution not only manages existing cloud infrastructures, but it provides the tools needed to assess current capacity and model expansion, as needed. Cloud begins with virtualization, and virtualization management is at the heart of SmartCloud Monitoring. Ease migration to private clouds As users consolidate and virtualize application workloads as part of their migration to cloud, SmartCloud Monitoring can help monitor and maintain the performance of those workloads in the move from physical to virtual machines. Meanwhile, a common fear when moving to a cloud environment is surrendering the infrastructure to automated processes and pooled physical resources. SmartCloud Monitoring tracks the status and trends of shared virtual resources, as well as the individual performance of virtual machines, looking at these workloads inside and outside simultaneously. Monitor heterogeneous environments At this point, few environments are completely virtualized, which means users need to monitor both physical and virtual infrastructures. Until now, this meant maintaining the skills to run different monitoring tools for the traditional data center versus comparatively new private clouds. SmartCloud Monitoring combined with IBM Tivoli Monitoring provides a comprehensive solution for complete monitoring of mixed environments, so users have visibility and control into all areas of the infrastructure physical, virtual and cloud. Eliminate time and costs of platform changes As private clouds mature and change, SmartCloud Monitoring can remain the common monitoring and management tool. SmartCloud Monitoring supports multiple hypervisor vendors and operating system platforms, thus reducing skills and licensing costs associated with changes in the datacenter. 4 SmartCloud Monitoring provides intuitive views into exactly what is running in a virtual environment, as well as the health of each component. Users gain integrated out-of-the-box contextual views of health and performance in the complete context of the virtual environment to include physical and virtual server, storage and network resources. Health dashboards Virtual infrastructures can grow very large, very fast, and with their virtualized pools of storage, networking and processing, a place to consolidate all of that information is essential. SmartCloud Monitoring enables this advanced visibility through health dashboards. These health dashboards provide a way to quickly view the overall health of the entire cloud, a view that would be impossible to see with traditional enterprise management tools, which allow only separate viewings of each host server. The SmartCloud Monitoring health dashboards enable users to quickly get a glimpse into the overall health of their cloud environment, while real-time proactive and predictive alerts help users identify and fix problems quickly. Click-in-context/drill-down capabilities The SmartCloud Monitoring solution s health dashboard goes a step beyond what is offered by competitors. The difference is that from its holistic dashboard view, users can click directly into the subject matter expert tools. They can then drill down into the actual physical component. For example, a cloud administrator who sees a storage problem on the dashboard can drill down into the IBM Tivoli monitoring tools for storage management and begin to address the issue from there. This feature enables more self-service and the ability to correct issues more efficiently. Take advantage of built-in analytics Much of the cost-savings expected from virtualization can be undermined by underutilization and poor management. And until now, monitoring tools have not provided predictive analytics and recommendations to proactively right-size cloud environments with room for expansion. Users have been unable to run workloads densely enough to maximize physical/virtual/ cloud environment consolidation. A major differentiator of SmartCloud Monitoring is its ability to provide visibility through analytics to enable accurate and far-reaching capacity planning and optimization of cloud and virtual environments. This is critical because while most organizations are already virtualizing, few are maximizing their potential return on investment. In addition, organizations need to know well in advance that they re trending toward necessary expansion, so they can make cloud infrastructure purchases strategically, rather than reactively. Capacity analytics One of the common pitfalls of virtualization is over provisioning, or creating virtual machines that are larger than they need to be. To combat this, capacity analytics provides workload right-sizing, or insight into existing workloads, either on identical or similar applications. Analytics then shows exactly how much resource that application is consuming, so users can model their new, virtual workloads with historical accuracy. This helps ensure that any new workloads that are created and added to the cloud are right-sized, often resulting in the need to buy fewer host servers. SmartCloud Monitoring is the first tool with this built-in capability to provide insight into how current workloads are running and how much more workload users could add to them and still be efficient. 4

5 In addition, capacity planning analysis helps to: Predict physical and virtual resource capacity bottlenecks Determine how many more customers or virtual machines can be serviced with existing resources (including a specified buffer factor) in a cluster or host Determine if there is enough capacity, and what the gaps are, to add more virtual machines to a server or cluster What-if analysis tools SmartCloud Monitoring includes what-if analysis tools that enable cloud administrators to make informed decisions through modeling. For example, whether it is possible to consolidate from three virtual hosts to two, or how many older hosts would be required to run desired workloads, versus upgrading to new ones. Users can model these scenarios to determine the most efficient, cost-effective route to take. Using actual performance data provides a much higher level of accuracy than traditional modeling, which was based on theoretical data. This feature enables users to make more informed decisions regarding upgrades, migration, consolidation and more. Policy-driven analytics A cloud infrastructure can create workload performance risks when placement is not optimized. That s why SmartCloud Monitoring includes policy-driven analytics to enable intelligent workload placement. It provides actionable recommendations on where to place workloads to gain the highest efficiency. There are many advantages to having this knowledge, including: Controlling hardware and software license costs Improving cloud density and knowing how much buffer to allow Allowing workloads to run for long periods without the need for costly tweaking or rearranging The policy-based framework enables users to apply custom or out-of-the-box policies to their analyses. Examples include growth rates, co-location/anti-location parameters, locating virtual machines with the same OS on a server and providing a reservation cushion for critical workloads.
