Emphasizes written and verbal communication skills, leadership, and team-building required in professional settings More science (and math) than MBA; more professional skills than a traditional science master s degree Includes project or team experience vs. thesis Provides connections to potential employers through internships and employer/industry advisory boards 13

14 UGA Professional Science Master of Biomanufacturing and Bioprocessing From Science to Business in Biomanufacturing: The Missing Link for the US Biotechnology Industry Unique in its focus on the full biomanufacturing experience with hands-on training and exposure to industrial grade equipment Includes academic courses in science and business, along with professional training with cutting edge companies through case study projects and internships. 14

15 National Science Foundation UGA received National Science Foundation funding to launch the program (~$700,000, 3 yr ) mainly to support students Formed Industrial Advisory Board Developed a 38-credit curriculum, months for completion Industry-linked research projects Paid industry internships Intensive, industry-relevant training 15

16 Why the PSM for UGA? Employers want personnel with advanced science skills but not necessarily a PhD. Need midlevel leadership Interdisciplinary teamwork, flexibility, and leadership, computational and communication skills, business knowledge, legal and regulatory affairs Program is unusually flexible and fluid in adjusting to shifting workforce demands and to rapidly changing research strategies and technologies Curriculum is designed to be responsive to workforce needs with input from advisory committees of employers 16

18 New Courses Developed New courses provide hand s on training with sophisticated equipment: Bioprocessing and Fermentation Technology Downstream Processing Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology Techniques in Mammalian Cell Culture and Antibody production Developed interactive software modules integrating processing controls and equipment used in industry Currently developing an analytical techniques course for industrial processes 18
