8 elearning Status in the Corporate Sector - 1 elearning market is small and highly competitive. elearning is more focussed and meant mostly for staff training, examples: using video-based content for continual medical education for family physicians case studies for marketing and sales staff in a beer making company telephone training for Call Centre operations staff 8

9 elearning Status in the Corporate Sector - 2 Generally, MNCs (Multi-National Corporations) adopt the elearning systems from their HQs SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) need help from the Government. The eleap (elearning Early Adopters Programme) provided some subsidies for elearning implementations. However, eleap have ended its run. 9

10 elearning as a Business - 1 Some consolidation, e.g. 4 competitors in the elearning business recently formed a joint venture to provide digital interactive learning resources to all the schools. 12 elearning as a Business - 3 Local companies in the education business formed a consortium called Singapore Education International in Oct Intention is to internationalize the education & training services of companies in Singapore. elearning forms part of this international drive. 12

Examples: Using TabletPCs to do field work on Science experiments Teaching Chinese language using the electronic dictionary Getting students to write their blogs Other interesting initiatives: Trying out the Semantic Web for resource discovery Exploring the use of the Learning Activities Management System (LAMS) 13

14 elearning Trends in Singapore - 2 Games and simulations, e.g. using the Learning Director which allows you to create media-rich gamebased learning, marketing, presentation, surveys and quizzes in multiple languages. General direction: Moving away from just pure content delivery but more towards student engagement and activities Teachers using more of templates rather than doing everything from scratch Singapore s approach: TEACH LESS LEARN MORE 14

15 Summary elearning infrastructure is in place New generation of young people is very technology savvy Emphasis is more on learner engagement, not just acquiring the skills Teachers emphasize more on the pedagogy aspect in using ICT Companies more interested in staff training elearning companies going overseas to create new elearning markets Thru elearning, we must make teaching & learning fun and enjoyable! 15
