2 OSU Bands The Oregon State University Wind Ensemble ~ MUS 150/350/550 Section 1 Conducted by Dr. Christopher Chapman, the OSU Wind Ensemble is a 43-member auditioned ensemble featuring the most outstanding brass, woodwind, and percussion players on campus. Wind Ensemble is open to all OSU students by audition. Auditions are held prior to the start of the academic year. The band requires a year-long commitment. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Focusing on new literature and performing masterworks of the wind band ensemble genre, the group s latest commissions and consortium partnerships include works by award-winning composers including Billy Childs, Dana Reason, Kevin Walczyk, Gregory Youtz, Michael Coolen, DJ Sparr, James Mobberly, Dan Welcher and David Gillingham. Recent concerts have included numerous pieces of original music for wind ensemble by prominent wind band composers. The OSU Wind Ensemble s reputation of excellence extends well beyond campus. Recent performances have included a concert tour in Japan, as well as at the College Band Directors National Association West/Northwest conference in Reno, Nevada; the All-Northwest Music Education Conference in Portland, Ore.; the Oregon Music Education Association Conference in Eugene, Ore.; and at Carnegie Hall in New York City. This year the group will release its second commercial recording on Mark Records. 1 Fall 2014

3 Wind Symphony ~ MUS 150/350/550 Section2 Wind Symphony is a 62-member, auditioned ensemble conducted by Dr. Jason Silveira and Dr. Dana Biggs. The band performs music written for the modern wind symphony, including pieces by notable composers such as Ticheli, Schuman, Barber and Del Tredici. The ensemble is open to all students on campus, with auditions held prior to the beginning of the academic year. Chamber Winds Conducted by Dr. Christopher Chapman, OSU Chamber Winds is a small, flexible ensemble comprised of select members of the OSU Wind Ensemble. This ensemble gives players an important chamber music experience, placing much responsibility on each individual. Students are exposed to the standards of the chamber wind repertoire, including classic works by such composers such as Mozart, Krommer, and Beethoven, as well as more contemporary works by Hindemith and Milhaud. The ensemble meets winter and spring terms. Additional chamber music opportunities exist with Clarinet Choir, Saxophone Choir, Double Reed Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Horn Choir, Trumpet Choir, Flute Choir, Trombone Choir and Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble. Jazz Ensemble ~MUS 158 Conducted by Ryan Biesack, the 20-member OSU Jazz Ensemble features the most outstanding jazz saxophones, trumpets, trombones and rhythm sections players on campus. This group performs professional level repertoire and holds concerts on campus and elsewhere in the Northwest. Recent performances have included music by Kubis, Menza, Parker, and Bellson. The ensemble rehearses winter and spring terms, meeting on Wednesdays from 6 8 p.m. in Benton Hall. Auditions are held the final week of classes during fall term. BANDS OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY 2

4 Campus Band ~ MUS 151/351 The Oregon State University Campus Band is conducted by Dr. Robert Brudvig. This member band is open to all students on campus and meets once a week on Tuesdays from 7 9 p.m. in Benton Hall. There is no audition required. The band performs classic wind band literature from composers such as Reed, Holst, Sousa and Ticheli, as well as classic transcriptions of the orchestral repertoire. Campus Band gives a free concert each term in the Memorial Union Lounge. Marching Band - MUS 150 Section 1 Founded in 1890, the Oregon State University Marching Band was the first band organized in the Pac-12 conference. Growth and quality of the OSU athletic bands program has garnered regional and national respect in recent years, as the program serves over 450 students each year through marching, pep, concert, and jazz bands. The OSU Marching Band, known as The Spirit and Sound of OSU, it is comprised of students representing majors across campus and performs at all home football games and select away games. The band prides itself in presenting energetic, entertaining performances, bringing something new to every game, and taking a big part in the game atmosphere at Reser Stadium. 3 Fall 2014

5 Basketball Pep Band - MUS 154 and MUS 152 Winter term, students who had performed in the Marching Band in the fall are eligible to participate in Pep Band. Pep Band plays for all men s and women s home basketball games at Gill Coliseum. A rotation of players affords students a schedule that is workable with classes and other commitments. The diversity among the students in the OSU bands makes for a great learning environment. The band program is very welcoming to all student musicians, not just the very best student musicians. This creates an environment where students are encouraged to grow and constantly work to improve their skills. Kappa Kappa Psi, the national honorary band fraternity that we have here at OSU, has given me a chance to work with a lot of different directors, which is beneficial to me as a future educator. Sarah Massey, junior Rhythm & Beavs - MUS 152 Rhythm & Beavs is a small, auditioned group of students from the OSU Marching Band that plays for athletic and other special events. This ensemble performs for the Beavers PAC-12 tournament games and follows teams to any post-season tournament games. Students who are selected register for Music 152 and receive one credit and a scholarship. BANDS OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY 4
