7 Town of Wake Forest History The town began in 1832 when the North Carolina Baptist Convention, intent on establishing an educational institute to train future ministers, purchased Dr. Calvin Jones' 615-acre plantation north of the existing community of Forestville for $2,000. The town's first industry, the Royall Cotton Mill, was built in 1899 by three brothers-in-law, W.C. Powell, R.E. Royall and T.E. Holding, to produce muslin sheeting from local cotton. The mill and the operatives' homes that were soon built were just north of the town boundary. Wake Forest Region's atmosphere can be described in one word: "festive." From January through December, one can always find a reason to celebrate life beyond the traditional holiday celebrations. Whether it's cheering for your favorite sports team, participating in Wake Forest's "Six Sundays in Spring" or the annual "Meet in the Street" festival that draws over 10,000 residents to our downtown area the social calendar will never be boring. Over the years, the Wake Forest Farmers' Market has grown into a lively community event each Saturday morning. We offer our own fresh-off-the-farm produce; pasture-raised beef, poultry, and pork; free-range eggs; fresh and dried herbs; honey, jams, and preserves; freshcut flowers; and delicious baked goods. The majority of our farm products are raised using environmentally sustainable agricultural practices, which are healthy for the soil, water, air, animals, and you!
8 Town of Wake Forest The Wake Forest Parks & Recreation Department manage 561 acres of parks, open space, natural land and trails. This includes five baseball/softball field, dog park, the Wake Forest Community House, Flaherty Park Community Center, and more than six miles of greenway trails. Wake Forest Town Hall earned LEED Platinum certification in November It is one of only a handful of municipal buildings in the United States to receive Platinum status.
