3 Introduction This guide provides an overview of Glow Web Hosting and its potential use in learning and teaching. There are instructions on setting up Glow Web Hosting and exploring its functionality. Glow is web-based and can be used wherever users have access to an internet connection. Each Glow user has their own unique username and password which gives access to information and resources appropriate to the user s role; thus, a pupil s access to Glow will differ from staff users. What is the Glow Web Hosting service? The Glow Web Hosting service allows a Glow user to own, add content to and publish a web site. A web site is a group of related web pages published on the world wide web or within an intranet such as Glow. The various pages of a web site are interconnected using hyperlinks which, when clicked, will navigate the user to another area of the web site. Most web sites have a home page as their starting point. To complete any of the tasks in this guide the user must be logged on to Glow as a user with the permission to use Glow Web Hosting. This permission is set by the Glow Accounts and Services Manager (ASM) for your school or your authority if you have any queries regarding the permissions that have been set for you, please check with your ASM. Why use the Glow Web Hosting service? Schools that do not already have a web presence could take advantage of the Glow service in order to publish their school web site for the world to see. Users can make various types of content visible to a much larger audience. For example, work could be shared across schools within Glow without the need to invite Glow users into a group, good practice could be highlighted to the wider internet community, school events could be publicised to the local community. Author: Glow Team Page 3 of 22 Ref: GC349_v1.1
4 The service could also provide Glow users with an additional area for distributing files if their portal space allocations have been used up. For example, a Glow user could create a basic web site for the purpose of storing files for upload and download. The flexibility of publishing web pages could allow for more creativity in the presentation of information. Pupils who have the knowledge to create web pages could be allowed to present their work in this format rather than using more traditional methods. Author: Glow Team Page 4 of 22 Ref: GC349_v1.1

All requests for web site approval or amendments to web sites, such as extending the expiry date, have to be approved. The approval of requests is carried out by the Accounts and Services Manager. Typically, this task will be carried out by the local authority ASM. In this tutorial you will: Use the Web Hosting Web Site Management web part to request approval to set up a web site Requesting a web site 1. Log on to Glow. 2. In the left-hand navigation bar click on My Glow. 3. In the Web Hosting Web Site Management web part, click on Request a Web Site. Author: Glow Team Page 8 of 22 Ref: GC349_v1.1

Note: the following special characters are not permitted in the web site name: \ / : *? < >, Storage Requested: The maximum storage space for a requested web site is 50MB. Please note: if you initially request a lower storage space for your web site, you can make a request to increase storage space at a later date. The Accounts and Services Manager responsible for approving web site requests can change the value of storage allocated to a web site during the approval process. Web Site Expires: This box is ticked by default. For a web site request with no expiry date you would remove the tick. Please note: the Accounts and Services Manager responsible for approving web site requests can change the expiry date for a web site during the approval process. Expiry Date: If the default tick is left in the Web Site Expires box, you will need to enter an expiry date for the web site. Web Site Access: This drop-down menu allows you to choose between letting only selected Glow users see your website (Internal intranet) or publishing your web site for all web users to see (Public Internet). Select groups from the chosen establishment: This option will only appear if you selected Internal intranet from the Web Site Access dropdown menu. The establishments you can select groups from are: your school, your local authority and the national portal. Available Groups: This option will only appear if you selected Internal intranet from the Web Site Access drop-down menu. This screen will change to display the groups from your school. 11 Viewing web site requests All requests for web site approval or amendments to web sites, such as extending the expiry date, have to be approved. The approval of requests is carried out by the Accounts and Services Manager. Note that you will need to wait for the Accounts and Services Manager to approve your request. Your web site requests are listed at the bottom of the Web Hosting Web Site Management web part. Web site request waiting for approval Viewing approved web sites Once a web site request has been approved, the details will appear near the top of the Web Hosting Web Site Management web part. 12 1. Click on the Web Site Name to go to the Web Site Details page. 2. This page provides additional functionality such as requesting more storage space for your web site or changing the expiry date. Click on the Web Site URL. Web Site URL 3. When a new web site is approved, Glow automatically creates a home page for your site called default.htm. The home page contains the following message: If you know how to edit HTML pages, you can change this page to reflect the home page of your web site. This guide does not cover editing of HTML pages. Tutorial 3 will guide you through the process of uploading ready-made HTML pages. You will need to use your browser buttons to return back to the web site details screen. 14 Tutorial 3 Managing the content of an approved web site A Glow hosted web site is suitable for publishing: Pages written in HTML HTML pages using technologies such as Flash and Shockwave HTML pages containing Javascript A Glow hosted web site is not suitable for, or may not support: Active Server Pages (ASP) Pages published with Microsoft FrontPage Extensions CGI scripts Glow Web Hosting does not provide tools for creating HTML pages. For the purpose of this tutorial, you could create your own HTML pages using proprietary software (e.g. Microsoft FrontPage, Adobe Dreamweaver) or HTML code (generated by Notepad or another HTML editor). This guide makes use of sample HTML files created for use in Glow training. Please check with your trainer for the location of these files. Glow on a Mac supports the upload of content to the web hosting server using secure file transfer protocol (ftp) via a suitable third party software client. Ftp clients allow you to upload multiple files and folders in a simple operation. In the event that ftp is blocked in your school, Glow provides a tool for managing and uploading your files. The Glow Manage Content tool uploads a single file at a time. Please note: modern web design software packages often provide the additional functionality of publishing the web pages created by the software to a web server using ftp thereby bypassing the need for third party ftp clients. Please refer to the relevant software documentation for further instruction. Author: Glow Team Page 14 of 22 Ref: GC349_v1.1
15 In this tutorial you will learn how to: Use a secure ftp client to upload web pages to your approved web site Use the Glow Manage Content tool to upload web pages to your approved web site Uploading content using Secure File Transfer Protocol Content for web hosting can be transferred to the server using a secure ftp application. These are not provided within Glow and must be installed and set up before the uploading of content can take place. The screenshot used in this guide is from the ftp client FileZilla version Different ftp clients may have a different look and feel but they all tend to operate using similar principles. To set up the client you should refer to the help for whichever client you choose. 1. Launch the ftp client. 2. The ftp client FileZilla uses a site manager to manage connections. 3. The connection needs to be configured to allow the transfer of files to take place. Glow supports the transfer of files using the TLS protocol which in simple terms is a secure method of communication between computers over a network. The configuration settings required are: Host address/url: ftp1.glowscotland.org.uk Username/password: Glow username and password Port (if required): 21 Servertype or protocol option: TLS or FTP over TLS Author: Glow Team Page 15 of 22 Ref: GC349_v1.1
16 4. A successful connection will display your web site in a windows style interface allowing you to copy files and folders by dragging and dropping from one location (e.g. your computer) to the web hosting server. 5. The web site can now be accessed using a browser and the URL shown in the Web Site Details screen (see page 12). Uploading content using Glow Manage Content The content management page has basic functionality to upload content, create folders, rename content and delete content. This solution should only be considered when uploading a small number of files or if the use of ftp is not permitted in your establishment. 1. Log on to Glow. 2. In the left-hand navigation bar click on My Glow. 3. In the Web Hosting Web Site Management web part select Manage content next to your approved web site details. 4. A new browser window will open. The Managing site window details all files and folders associated with your web site. The screenshot above is displaying the default.html page that is automatically created when a web site is approved. Author: Glow Team Page 16 of 22 Ref: GC349_v1.1
17 5. Select the default file by clicking on the radio button to the left of the file name. Click on Delete to allow the uploading of a new default file for the web site. 6. Confirm the deletion of the default.html file. 7. Click on Upload. 8. Click on Choose File. 9. Navigate to where the sample (or your own) HTML files are stored. 10. Select the file called default. This will be the home page for your web site. 11. Click on Upload File. 12. Repeat steps 7 to 11 to upload the sample files page1, page2 and page The graphic images used by these web pages are stored in a separate folder. You need to create a folder in the Managing site window to store the graphic images. Click on New Folder. 14. Name the folder: images. (note: lowercase letters only) Author: Glow Team Page 17 of 22 Ref: GC349_v1.1
18 15. Click on Create Folder. 16. Click on the images folder to open it. 17. Repeat steps 7 to 11 to upload the files band, boulangerie, running, mcdonaldsfr and teacher_whiteboard to the images folder. 18. Click on Up to return to the top level of the Managing site window. 19. Return to My Glow via the browser History menu or browser back button. 19 20. Click on the web site name to return to the Web Site Details screen. 21. Click on the web site URL to test the web site. 22. Use your browser back button or the history menu to return back to My Glow. 23. Note: To let others (the groups allocated) see your web site you will have to pass on the web site URL. This could be done by copying the URL and ing it or setting up a Glow Group for the authorised users and adding the URL as a Web Link. Author: Glow Team Page 19 of 22 Ref: GC349_v1.1
20 Tutorial 4 Requesting changes to your web site In this tutorial you will: Use the Web Hosting Web Site Management web part to request additional storage space for your web site It is also possible to request approval for changes to the permissions (who can see your web site) and to change the expiry date of your web site. To request approval for more storage space 1. Log on to Glow then in the left-hand navigation bar click on My Glow. 2. In the Web Hosting Web Site Management web part click on your web site name. 3. Click on Request More Storage. Note that if your web site is already set to the storage space maximum of 50MB, you will be unable to request additional storage space. 4. From the drop-down menu, request a new storage value. It is good practice to add a comment for the approver explaining why you are requesting a change to your web site. 5. Click on Submit Request to return to the Web Site Details page. You will need to wait for the administrator to approve your request. Your web site requests are listed at the bottom of the Web Hosting Web Site Management web part. Author: Glow Team Page 20 of 22 Ref: GC349_v1.1
