4 FEATURED SPEAKERS Lynn Hamilton McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia Lynn Hamilton is an Associate Professor and Director of Management Communication Programs at the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia. She established the school s writing and presentation skills program in 1998 and oversees the faculty group that delivers communication instruction in the school s undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Lynn teaches in the McIntire School s Integrated Core Experience (ICE) program and the M.S. in Management of Information Technology and M.S. in Commerce programs. Her special interests include media relations, leadership communication, digital communication risks, social media, and professional and corporate storytelling. Lynn earned an MBA from Southern Methodist University and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Virginia. Her career has included working as a newspaper reporter and editor, a strategic planning analyst at a bank holding company, and a public affairs writer at Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson. She is a member of the national editorial review board of Business Communication Quarterly and co-author (with Mary Munter) of the 10th edition of Guide to Managerial Communication, published by Pearson in Her fiction has appeared in a number of literary journals. Sue Vargo Kelley School of Business at Indiana University Dr. Sue Vargo holds a Ph.D. in Speech Communication from Indiana University. Her 38-year career includes experience as a consultant, entrepreneur, administrator, and award winning professor. She has taught domestic and international graduate and undergraduate students the art of public speaking, interviewing, public relations and listening. Vargo has worked as a communication coach/consultant with an assortment of business professionals. She has been invited to speak to diverse audiences on topics including leadership development, listening, intercultural communication, negotiation, gender communication and nonverbal communication. Vargo is currently the Director of Communication and Professional Skills in the nationally ranked Kelley School of Business.
5 PRESENTERS AND PANELISTS Bonnie Auslander Kogod School of Business at American University Bonnie Auslander founded and directs American University s Kogod Center for Business Communications. She has worn two hats as a writer and as a teacher of writing for many years, having taught managerial communications at American, Duke University, and Cornell University and having worked with clients in marketing and public relations. A poet and essayist whose commentaries have aired on public radio, Bonnie has a BA from Wesleyan University and an MFA in creative writing from the UMass. Meghann Drury-Grogan Gabelli School of Business at Fordham University Meghann L. Drury-Grogan, Ph.D., M.A., H.Dip.B.S., is an Assistant Professor of Communication and Media Management in the Schools of Business at Fordham University. Her research focuses on business communication, project management communication and decision making. She has taught academic & practitioner audiences internationally, and published in leading international journals & conferences. Dr. Drury has received numerous awards, including an NCA 2012 Best Paper Award for her paper entitled Assessing the impact of a training simulation on participants self-perceptions, (co-author Travis Russ). Prior to Fordham, Dr. Drury worked for Deloitte Consulting LLP as an organization and change management consultant developing and implementing communication strategies. Melinda Knight Montclair State University Melinda Knight is a professor of English and the founding director of the Center for Writing Excellence at Montclair State University, which she joined in Previously, she directed programs and taught at the George Washington University, the Simon School of Business at the University of Rochester, and NYU s Stern School of Business. Since 2010 she has served as editor of Business Communication Quarterly. She earned Ph.D. and M.A degrees from NYU and a B.A. from Cornell University.
6 Christina Owings Fox School of Business at Temple University Christina Owings is the ESL Consultant at the Fox School of Business at Temple University. She has 15 years of international, ESL communications consulting experience in corporate, nonprofit, and academic sectors. Her past training clientele includes high level executives from many well-known companies. She specializes in accent modification, presentation skills, and multicultural business communications. Her coaching sessions use a customized approach that incorporates multimedia tools. Sana Reynolds Baruch College, CUNY Dr. Sana Reynolds (PhD, Tulane University; Doctorat d universite, Sorbonne; MA, Middlebury) is a communication expert and consultant with over 25 years of extensive multinational experience. Her areas of expertise include organizational communication (writing, document design, presentations skills) and cross-cultural communication (creating cultural synergy and partnering productively in a global environment). Dr. Reynolds books Guide to Cross-Cultural Communication and Guide for Internationals: Culture, Language and ESL (Prentice Hall) have been extremely well received. Travis Russ Gabelli School of Business at Fordham University Travis L. Russ, PhD, is an assistant professor of communication and media management at the Fordham School of Business. His research cuts across the fields of communication studies, organizational studies, and adult learning and education studies. The primary focus of his research examines how the dynamics of human communication and learning influence the implementation of planned organizational change. A second stream of his research examines the pedagogical implications of business-communication education. His research has been published in Management Communication Quarterly, Journal of Business Communication, Business Communication Quarterly, and other leading international journals.
7 Lorraine Ritacco Shaw Temple University Lorraine Ritacco Shaw is the Academic Coordinator of the Intensive English Language Program (IELP) at Temple University. After earning her Master s Degree in TESOL from the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania in 1994, she joined the Adjunct Instructor staff of the intensive ESL programs at both Drexel University and The University of Pennsylvania. In 2007, she began a private ESL coaching practice, working in area businesses such as GlaxoSmithKline and Chatham Financial Services. She was also the ESL Specialist at the Fox School of Business at Temple University before joining the full-time staff at the IELP. Virginia Sheridan Kogod School of Business at American University Virginia Sheridan is the Assistant Director at the Kogod Center for Business Communications at American University. She was a Vice President in credit cards of Citicorp for many years and more recently the President of VGS Corporation, where she provided marketing and management consultations to clients in the educational and real estate development industries. Her work with internationally recognized companies such as Colgate Palmolive, General Foods International, and Johnson & Johnson gives her a global perspective on product development and strategic planning. She holds a BA from Bryn Mawr College and an M.F.A. in creative writing from American University. Lisa Warshaw Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania Lisa Warshaw, Director of the Wharton Communication Program, has business, teaching and consulting experience in the U.S. and over 20 other countries. The Program she leads combines speaking and writing - teaching over 1000 MBA and Executive MBA students each year. Lisa has won two Wharton MBA teaching awards and is a two-time winner of the Whatever it Takes Award for her contribution to the Wharton community. Lisa has a B.A. with honors in economics from Duke University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
