2 OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY PAGE A2 Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018 Chamber of Commerce News Montgomery County s small business sector just got a little bit bigger with the addition of 3 Pink Poppies boutique in downtown New Market. The new women s boutique held a grand opening event on Jan. 27. The store initially opened in December just in time for the holiday season and has received positives responses from the public. January s grand opening event will mark the official opening of the store with discounted items and drawings for prizes just for visiting the store. 3 Pink Poppies is a partnership among three local women, Jennifer Fry, Becky Nelson, and Kathleen Nelson, who wanted to bring affordable fashion to the community. Several Boutiques have been popping up in surrounding counties, but none in Montgomery County, and we saw an opportunity to bring a fun shopping experience to women of all ages close to home, says Kathleen Nelson. Boutique shopping has become a niche industry and people travel just to find a small store with an inviting atmosphere for a more personal shopping experience, states Jennifer Fry. 3 Pink Poppies brings that small-town type of experience a little closer to home with modest prices, adds Becky Nelson. With that said, I don t think we backed down, but they put a great amount of pressure on our guards, he continued. With their length, we couldn t see past the defense. Crawfordsville s first field goal didn t come until the 1:47 mark of the second quarter on a Lauren Kellerman 3-pointer to cut the Bison lead to We went in at halftime and told them that although the pressure is really hard to overcome right now, it s going to make us better moving forward, Bean said. I thought we responded to their pressure a little better after the half. The Athenians best quarter was the third. Kellerman started it with a basket, while Melia Tomlinson had 2-points and Chloie Livesay three in the quarter. However, BC still outscored the Athenians Benton Central (19-6), who led wire-to-wire, had two in double figures led by Emma Fisher s 12 and Abigail Cooley s 11. They outrebounded the Athenians Crawfordsville (2-21) was led by Kellerman s 8 while Livesay and Peyton Sinnet each had 3. I apologized to them that we could have a little more success but reminded them that they weren t defined by the win-loss record, Bean said. Their great leaders, and I think the experience of being on the team will make them better people in the future. Bean said he is also excited about the program going forward. We have some girls that want to be good basketball players coming up, and they ll be ready to get to work, he said. We have some good freshmen and sophomores that will be ready to step Delivered Daily and Available Online at up, and a strong eighth grade class. Competition for next basketball season starts right away, and that s exciting. Benton Central advances to Friday s semi-final game two, where they will face North Montgomery. 6 A6 Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018 of Montgomery County Dr. Roberts talks shoulder pain - part 2 Welcome back to part two of my series on shoulder pain. First, I want to do a quick review of shoulder anatomy (see diagram of the right shoulder from the front view). The upper arm bone (humerus) joins to the scapula at the glenoid and is held in place by two structures: (1) a rim of cartilage (glenoid labrum) that forms a shallow cup for the head of the humerus to sit in, and (2) the rotator cuff which is made up of four tendons that wrap around the head of the humerus. As I stated last week, in order for the shoulder to move in so many directions, it has to be inherently unstable. Since it is so unstable, two of the most common injuries are dislocations and subluxations. Dislocations result when the ball on the head of the humerus slips out of the glenoid cup and stays there. This typically happens when a person s upper arm is hit from behind when the arm is raised to the side and the shoulder is cocked and ready to throw. A subluxation is less severe than a dislocation. The ball does not completely come out of the cup. Subluxations are usually brief events and the ball returns to its normal position spontaneously, but can feel unstable afterward. Dislocations sometimes reduce spontaneously, but often require manipulation by a doctor to get the head of the humerus back in position. When a dislocation occurs, it can damage structures in the shoulder. The connective tissue capsule around the joint can be torn. One or more tendons in either the rotator cuff, or those attached to other muscles, may be stretched or torn. The glenoid labrum may be torn as well. When these structures are disrupted, it makes the shoulder even more unstable and more likely to cause additional damage and even dislocate again. Treatment for dislocations usually involves rest, bracing, and strengthening the shoulder muscles with Ladoga Elementary Honor Roll ST SEMESTER High Honor Roll 1st GRADE Job Bradley, Emelia Fenton, Callaway Garlock, Layla Grimes, Benjamin Gurule, Gavin Mason, Grace Pendleton, Korbin Perry, Grant Reeves, Carson Vaught, 2ND GRADE Layla Bauman, Andrei Cozaciuc, Lucian Cozaciuc, Quentin Hartman, Ella Largent, Claire Mc- Cutchan, Kynzi Powell, Astrid Rabeyrin, Amy Roeder, Haylyn Wallace, 3RD GRADE Trent Reeves, Tyler Thompson, 4TH GRADE Jaysa Crull, Aubrey Lyon, Carson Powell, Luc Rabeyrin, 5TH GRADE Gabe Brenda, Paul Hazlett, Mallory Mason, Emma JOHN R. ROBERTS, M.D. Montgomery Medicine physical therapy. Surgery may also be required to repair a torn labrum or tendons. Another very common cause of shoulder pain is bursitis. Most of our joints are surrounded by fluid-filled sacs that pad the structures around the joint, particularly tendons. These sacs are called bursae (singular bursa). Bursae can become irritated, inflamed, and sometimes infected. Irritation of the bursae in the shoulder can occur following repetitive motion of the shoulder. This is commonly referred to as an overuse injury. I see this frequently in weekend warriors; not just the folks participating in throwing sports, but also MARKING PERIOD 3 7th Grade High Honor Roll Faith Allen, Carson Chadd, Kion Cornelius, Adam Cox, Elle Gray, Ethan Harden, Abigail Korhorn, Gabriel Little, Lopati McQueen, Samantha Mooday, Cailin Phillips, Emma Phillips, Olivia Powell, Regan Remley, Simon Sharp, Emily Smith, Stella Snook, Dara Watson, Ella Watson, Lee Whitecotton, Saylor Woods. 8th Grade High Honor Roll- Tiffany Dittmer, Brooke Ellenberger, Alexandria Hieston, Gerald Hutson, Trent Jones, Isabelle Miller, Raevan Million, Van Powers, Chaney Scott, Trevor Surface. 7th Grade Regular Honor Roll-Nolan Allen, Tayler Anderson, Mackenzie Arnold, Emma Bowers, Shania Bowman, Eric Brewer, Olivia Brock, Brennden Busenbark, Gavin Conrad, Abigail Cox, Grace Cronley, Nicholas Curtis, Rebekah Davis, Jorge Diaz, Wyatt Ellenberger, Chesney Foster, LillyAnn Gardner, Rylan Gayler, Rylan Gentry, Jordan Gilstrap, Harrison Haddock, Mason Hall, Logan Harman, Jasmine Hayes, Kiya Heimbach, Chayce Howell, Donovan Johnson, Caylin Kirk, Samuel Line, Chloe those participating in other repetitive arm motions, like painting their house, trimming trees or shoveling snow. Treatment of bursitis can be difficult. Standard treatment consists of rest and anti-inflammatory medication as well as icing. Doctors usually recommend non-steroidal medications (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Advil Motrin ) or naproxen (Aleve ). If those conservative treatments fail, we may recommend more potent steroids, either taken orally or delivered into the bursa with an injection. The final cause of shoulder pain I want to discuss is impingement. This term refers to structures in the shoulder coming into contact with one another resulting in pain. Impingement can be bone-on-bone, or bone pinching or rubbing a tendon or bursa. While this occurs more commonly in people who have suffered shoulder injuries, it can also occur in an uninjured shoulder where anatomic structures are naturally close together. Tendons that have been injured can swell, making them more likely to be pinched or rubbed with Myers, Kylee Reeves, Jayden Thompson, 6TH GRADE Nolan Boyer, Jessica Bradley, Ella Brewer, Carter Hubble, Chloe Jenkins, Hanna Long, Harmonee Margison Honor Roll 1st GRADE Hayleigh Boots, Harrison Cass, Ayden Crull, McKenzie Gleason, Owen Grimes, Caiden Halstead, Nehemiah Holmes, Jaclyn Kelly, Bruce Leahy, Jaylean Lowery, Cori Lynn, Lamont Pedrey, Brynlee Pruett, Bailey Richmond, Ellee Wethington, 2ND GRADE Zoee Arthur, Ayden Burger, Carson Chandler, Ben Gleason, Bryor Johnson, Abigail Smith, Hunter Thompson, Allison Turner, Kaylee Wallace, Ruby Zimmerman, 3RD GRADE Savannah Bradley, Edwin Burris, Joanna Castillo, Peyton Cornell, Landon Dagley, Kayden Davis, Landon Grimes, Rylee Lyon, Keanu McQueen, Owen Newkirk, Chayton Pitman, Cooper Scott, Macy Scott, Makinzie Wood, 4TH GRADE Samuel Crum, Taylan Dinius, Isabella Elless, John Lock, Chazz Long, Madisyn Posthauer, Tovi Powell, Avery Stokes, Griffin Troy, Emilee Wethington, 5TH GRADE Jayden Dagley, Micah Kiger, Haley Scott, Anna Stokes, Kelsey Thompson, Ally Wallace, 6TH GRADE Oliver Bradley, Alex Burkholder, Haley Burton, Mason Cass, Caydence Chandler, Kamden Dinius, Skyla Lynn, Conner McKinney, Ryley Mitton, Alec Myers, Kaden Newgent, Lillianne Odum, Scarlet Overfelt, Madison Perigo, Ashtin Pickett, Daniel Reeves, Caden Sixberry, Bracy Slavens, Cooper Smith, Heaven Smith, Kirsten Soglin, Brady Spencer, Luke Tesmer, Brennen Thornburg, Chelsea Veatch, Alexis White, Alivia Williams, Isabella Wilson, Skyler Wood. 8th Grade Regular Honor Roll- Justin Bachmann, Bailey Barker, Karter Blankenship, Roger Brady Boller, Levi Brush, Kaitlyn Burkholder, Nickolas Busenbark, Jalyn Caldwell, Madison Chadwick, shoulder movements. The bones in the shoulder may also develop arthritis with bony overgrowth as a result of injury or age. These overgrowths can lead to impingement as well. Treatment of impingement varies based on the structures involved. Swollen, inflamed tendons or bursae are treated like bursitis. Occasionally, surgery must be performed to make more room for the structures being rubbed or pinched. This can usually be done through small incisions using an arthroscope. As always, prevention is the best medicine. If you are involved in sports or work activities that involve a lot of shoulder motion, get involved in a fitness plan to keep your shoulder muscles strong, particularly your rotator cuff. Exercise programs are readily available on the Internet by searching rotator cuff exercises. Dr. John Roberts is a Crawfordsville physician.
