An elective course that integrates some basics of regional economics with practice and policy of technology based economic growth in a spatial frame of cities and networks. Module 1 Introduction to regional economics - Input-output analysis - Regional-economic growth theory (including trade theory); convergence and divergence - Distance, ICTs and the death of distance (Amsterdam as a case study) - Clusters, learning regions, and knowledge policies (SMEs) - and EU regional-economic policy (content and process) - Innovation (company level), nodes and networks, and policy evaluation - Product life cycle, company strategies and spatial implications (chemical industry and biotechnology). There is also a brief analysis of a relevant problem (small report). Module 2 Project evaluation in a regional context - Innovative approaches to policies for cities as nodes (public-private cooperation) - Regional strength-weakness analysis (benchmarking) focusing on innovation, cost-benefit analysis - One/two subjects to be selected by students. There is also a brief analysis of a relevant problem. Module Own Work - Analysis of a regional-economic problem and concomitant policymaking (the Netherlands or a country abroad, if sufficient data available). Examples: technology- based economic growth, foreign direct investment (FDI) and impacts on growth, Science parks and incubation centres as tools in regional-economic policy. The end result of this module is a report. To provide understanding of different economic growth in regions, e.g. core regions and peripheries, using various explanatory theories (Module 1) - To develop practical skills to analyze spatial-economic transformation processes (use of analytical tools) (Module 1) - To provide understanding of national (regional) policymaking, e.g. on the knowledge economy, and competitiveness of SMEs (clusters) (Module 1) - To provide understanding of company growth based on old and new technology, barriers to innovation and the role of knowledge networks (Module 1). - To understand new trends in policymaking for nodes (cities) and evaluation methods of regional economic projects (Module 2). - To develop practical skills to analyze a regional-economic problem, to identify solutions and potentials for policymaking (Module Own Work). Lectures by staff (9) in Module 1; lectures by staff and students (7) in Module 2; Instruction and consultation by staff in Module Own Work. The course material is in English. (1) Key chapters from Armstrong, H. and Taylor (2001) Regional Economics and Policy. Oxford: Blackwell (3rd edition). (2) Articles in Journals and sheets (hand-outs). Module 1 and Module 2: for each of these modules a written exam. Module Own Work: a grade for the report. If Module 1 and Module 2: the final grade is the combination of both (50%-50%). If Module 1 and Module 2 and Own Work, the final grade is 66% (Modules 1 and 2) - 33% (Own Work). There are three modules of 4 ECTS. Module 1 is compulsory for access to Module 2 and Own Work. Module 2 and Own Work are optional. The minimum work is Module 1 (4 ECTS) and the maximum is Module 1 + Module 2 + Own Work (12 ECTS). In case of a large number of International MSc students, the teaching language is English. *There are three codes: Module 1: spm9306 (4 ECTS) Module 1 + Module 2: spm9307 (8 ECTS) Module 1 + Module 2 + Own Work: spm9308 (12 ECTS). 4 WM0615TU Environmental Economics 4 5 4/0/0/0 WM0623TU International Business Management 4 5 0/4/0/0 Course Contents Study Goals International Business Management aims to identify and analyze international business activities (e.g. international trade, foreign direct investment, international finance transactions, international marketing). The course will describe how the international environment affects individuals, organizations and companies as well as the extent in which the latter shape and transform the global economy. International Business Management aims to: - provide students insight in the international environment in which (multinational) companies operate. -investigate the different modes of business activities in the global economy. Education Method Literature and Study Materials Prerequisites Assessment Enrolment / Application - Demonstrate the distinction between the performance of individual multinational firms and the international performance of countries and the complex mechanisms through which both interact. Teaching will take place through interactive classroom meetings. The first part of the course consists of theories on international economics and international business. The rest of the meetings will be interactive and consist of the presentation of a real world business case by the students in which the theories are applied. To be announced.
