4 1 Dream diaries Warmer Write these sentences on the board: I had a good last night. A bad is called a nightmare. My is to travel around the world. Students copy them and decide which word can complete all of the sentences (dream). Students answer the questions. 5 Past simple: irregular verbs Write I looked around and I saw a tiger on the board. Ask students to tell you the infinitive of the two verbs. Review how we form the past simple of regular verbs. Tell students that some verbs are irregular and change in the past, for example: see saw. 8 Adjectives of opinion Warmer Draw two large speech bubbles on the board. In the first, write: What do you think of...? In the second, write: It s... / They re... Think of some names that will provoke a strong reaction from students (e.g. pop stars, sports teams, politicians, types of food, etc.). Ask the question several times using different names and write their answers in the second speech bubble Students decide if the adjectives are positive, negative or neutral. Students own answers Reinforcement Students make a list of 12 things of their choice - one for each of the adjectives in exercise 1. Then, in pairs, they compare their lists. Are any of their ideas similar? Extension Students choose three of the names from the warmer and write sentences giving their opinion and explaining why they have that opinion. In pairs, they take it in turns to read out their sentences. Does their partner agree or disagree? Students look at the photograph. Ask: What can you see in the picture? What do you think these two people are talking about? Explain that it is Monday, and Martin and Jane are talking about the weekend Students listen, and write what Martin and Jane did at the weekend. Highlight that each person did more than one thing. 9 Past simple: questions Write this question on the board: Did Martin have a good weekend? Can students answer the question? Write the short and long answers on the board: Yes, he did. Martin had a good weekend. Explain that the word order for forming questions in the past simple is: Did + subject + infinitive for all subjects. Write the question Did he buy the shirt? and introduce the negative short answer No, he didn t. Tell students we use the same form for all subjects. Check that students can form the positive and negative short answers Yes, I did. and No, I didn t. 1 Students complete the questions using Did and the verbs. Explain that the word order for forming Whquestions in the past is: Question word + did + subject + infinitive Students order the words to make questions. Then they complete the dialogue by writing these questions in the correct place. Play the CD to check answers. Past time expressions Ask students to find two time expressions in the dialogue in exercise 2 and write them on the board: last weekend, at four-thirty. Explain that we often use time expressions when talking about the past. Check students understand the meaning of the time expressions in the box. Point out that we use yesterday with parts of the day (e.g. yesterday afternoon), but we say last night (not yesterday night). Also explain that we use ago to say how far in the past something happened (e.g. two months ago). 3 Students answer the questions. Jennifer Love Hewitt 800s: Early diaries came from East Asia. One of the first diaries was by Li Ao. He wrote about his travels in China in the 9 th century : Samuel Pepys wrote about life in London. He described important events like the Fire of London in Samuel Pepys : Colonel Ernest Loftus of Zimbabwe started his diary when he was twelve. He wrote it until he died when he was 103! : Anne Frank, a Jewish girl, wrote her diary in an attic in Amsterdam. She lived there to escape from the Nazis. It was her special friend and she called it Kitty. Anne Frank : Zlata Filipovic started her diary when she was ten. She wrote about life during the war in Sarajevo. 12 1 Famous diaries CLIL objective: Students look at people who wrote diaries during important moments in history. Warmer Tell students that you are going to describe something. Can they guess what it is? Say the following sentences one by one. After each sentence, ask students to make a guess. It s a type of book. Ordinary people write this type of book. They usually write it at night. Some people write it online. It contains personal information. 13 Describe a process Background The word blog is a contraction of Web log or weblog. A blog is a personal web site that is regularly updated with a person s news, thoughts, photos, etc. A person who keeps a blog is called a blogger. A lot of teachers keep blogs. Warmer Find out if anyone in the class writes a blog or if they know anyone who writes one. Ask students if they know how to start a blog. They can explain in their own language. Write the words a password, a provider and a weblog site on the board and check that students understand them. 1 Students order the steps to start a blog.
