Challenges Development effort shifts more and more to software and IT Connect to a near future proof platform? Inter device communication profiles Hardware development Who is going to design and manufacture 25 billion devices in the coming 5 years? ( per minute) 9

Typical WPAN requirements Low power (often battery operated) Medium data rate Networked topologies (Mesh, star etc) Short range (0,1 10 meter) 10

WPAN technologies for IOT WiFi Bluetooth Zigbee 6LoWPAN Zwave Myrianed RFID NFC 11

Wifi Wi-Fi, is a local area wireless technology that allows an electronic device to exchange data or connect to the internet using 2.4 GHz UHF and 5 GHz SHF radio waves. The Wi-Fi Alliance defines Wi-Fi as any "wireless local area network (WLAN) products that are based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) standards. Pro High data throughput Worldwide standard Con Power consumption Unit price Dependency on 3 rd party access points High software maintenance cost 12

13 Examples

Bluetooth 4.0 Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances (using short-wavelength UHF radio waves in the ISM band from 2.4 to GHz) from fixed and mobile devices. It can connect several devices, overcoming problems of synchronization. The Smart Mesh study group has been created to define the Feature Requirements for a Smart Mesh networking within the Bluetooth SIG. It is expected that the initial FRD will concentrate on lighting. Pro Low power Smartphone compatible Con Limited range Gateway needed for internet connection Upcoming mesh networking (2016) Limited bandwith Additional functions (Beacon) 14

15 Examples

Zigbee ZigBee is a specification for a suite of high-level communication protocols used to create personal area networks built from small, low-power digital radios. ZigBee is based on an IEEE standard. Though its low power consumption limits transmission distances to meters line-ofsight, depending on power output and environmental characteristics, ZigBee devices can transmit data over long distances by passing data through a mesh network of intermediate devices to reach more distant ones. Pro Mesh networking Con Heavy stack (>60Kb) Almost no inter operability Gateway needed for outgoing connection Issues if mesh > ~40 pieces (latency) 16

17 Examples

6LoWPAN 6LoWPAN is an acronym of IPv6 over Low power Wireless Personal Area Networks. The 6LoWPAN concept originated from the idea that "the Internet Protocol could and should be applied even to the smallest devices, and that lowpower devices with limited processing capabilities should be able to participate in the Internet of Things. Pro Con IP adress for all nodes Same heavy stack as Zigbee (IEEE ) Backed by big players 18

Examples No high volume consumer product available yet. All under development. Major players have joined the Thread group. 19

Z-wave Z-Wave is a wireless communications protocol designed for home automation, specifically for remote control applications in residential and light commercial environments.. As of 2014, there are more than 1100 different products certified by the Z- Wave Alliance. Products and applications from the Z-Wave Alliance span all major market sectors for residential and light commercial control applications. Pro Mesh network Lot of products in market Con proprietary radio system from Sigma designs Mostly smaller OEMs interoperable 20

21 Examples

Myrianed MyriaNed is a wireless sensor network (WSN) platform developed by DevLab. It uses an epidemic communication style based on standard radio broadcasting. Messages are sent periodically and received by adjoining neighbors. Each message is repeated and duplicated towards all nodes that span the network, it spreads like a virus (hence the term epidemic communication). Pro Mesh networking Self organising Build by FHI members Con Not a lot of large companies involved (yet) 22

RFID Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is the wireless use of electromagnetic fields to transfer data, for the purposes of automatically powering, identifying and tracking tags attached to objects. Pro Power harvesting, no battery Low cost Con Short distances (or large antenna) Old technology (weak security) Only live when read or need of battery 23

NFC NFC technology is a newer, more finely honed version of RFID. It operates at a maximum range of about 4 inches (10 centimeters) and can be set up for one- or two-way communications. Pro More secure then RFID Supported on smartphones Con Short range Not supported by Apple 24

25 Upcoming tech for IOT
