KRNET /29 Why IP (1/2) Most of the IP based technologies already exist, well known and proven to be working. The pervasive nature of IP networks allows use of existing infrastructure. Intellectual property conditions for IP networking technology is either more favourable or at least better understood than proprietary and newer solutions.
KRNET /29 New Radio Why IP (2/2) Barriers Risk Mitigation to deployment New CSMA/CA MAC only CSMS/CA MAC plus GTS/Beaconing AODV New Network and IP AODV plus Cluster Tree New Sockets API and Zigbee SNMPAPI plus ZDOs New Application Vs.
KRNET /29 IPv6 Why IPv6 Pros: More suitable for higher density (futuristically 2 orders of magnitude larger than traditional networks) Statelessness mandated No NAT necessary (adds extra cost to the cost prohibitive WSN) Possibility of adding innovative techniques such as location aware addressing IEEE 64 bit address subsumed into IPv6 address Cons: Larger address width (Having efficient address compression schemes may alleviate this con) Complying to IPv6 node requirements (IPSec is mandated) IPv4 Limited address space Not as compressible NAT functionality needs gateways, etc leads to more cost Statelessness not mandated
KRNET /29 IETF Stuff Related Works (Standard) A new BOF was held during 61 st IETF at D.C. 6lowpan (IPv6 over IEEE ) Invensys, Hellicom, Intel, Sun, Panasonic An official Working Group begun on March of this year. Motivations Business aspect of several company leading embedded wireless networking (e.g., homenetwork, sensor network, home control. Etc.) Intel has been looking into sensor networks it originally was looking into ZigBee Emphasized vision of Invensys is not about smart home pejorative term, but more about convenient home!
KRNET /29 Characteristics of 6lowpan Related Works (Standard) Small packet size ( at most 81 octets for data packets) MAC (16-bit / 64-bit) Low bandwidth/power/cost Topologies (star and mesh) Ad-Hoc fashion Inexpensive modules Low Cost Low Power Consumption Internet connectivity Open standard
KRNET /29 Related Works (Standard) 6lowpan Goal Transmission of a small packet over IEEE PMTU, Header Compression IPv6 Auto-Configuration Generating an Interface Identifier from the EUI-64 assigned to the IEEE device A routing protocol AODV IP management SMNPv3 Security AES link layer security from the IEEE Supporting end-to-end security

KRNET /29 Why IPv6? Use Case : Helicomm (1/3) Rapid growth in networked devices throughout Asia Additional network address space, IP compatibility Selective demand in US & EU for IPv6 feature set Zero configuration, network self configuration Why Helicomm? Strong market presence in Asia Deploying one of world s largest Wireless Home Control solutions with Haier Customers looking for integrated solutions (technology agnostic) Modules, networking software, gateways (optional), tools View ZigBee & IPv6 as Complementary ZigBee for system interoperability & large / complex hybrid networks IPv6 for IP back-office system compatibility & proprietary applications
KRNET /29 Home Control AMR Use Case : IPv6 Application Scenarios (2/3) Wireless Lifestyle for integrated IP-based wireless solution (e.g,. Haier) Standalone products that do not require / can not afford ZigBee gateway Primarily for Commercial & Industrial electric meter aggregation Current customers use GPRS & paging network for WAN Security Other IP-based video monitoring solutions commonplace (e.g., Sony) IP-based wireless image capture / low rate video a natural fit Access Control (leverage existing IP infrastructure) Parking Meters (integrate with IP-based WWAN)
KRNET /29 Use Case : IPv6 Architecture (3/3) Commercial targeting (2Q/2005) ICC Application Module-Level View BSD API ioctl API ZigBee Profiles ZigBee NWK Proprietary Applications IEEE IPv6 Goal: Provide market with standards-based choice Helicomm IP-Net Design Target (Optimized) < 16KB ROM <1KB RAM TinySNMP Agent & MIB IPv6 / ICMPv6 (subset) / UDP AODV Mesh Routing 15.4 TinyMAC MCU / 15.4 RF Drivers 15.4 RF IC 2.4GHz 15.4 RF IC 868/915MHz
