7 E N E R G Y M A N A G E M E N T I N T H E H O M E If electricity produced by new renewable sources is fed into the network, occurring fluctuations need to be balanced. This is either possible by adjusting conventional energy production or by adjusting the demand for electricity. If heat pumps, hot water systems and electrical heaters of many participants are connected to a virtual power plant, it can have a capacity similar to one of the existing nuclear power plants. Often the new renewable energies are producing when there is no demand. IoT Presstour Page 7

24 T I M E L I N E In 1926 Nikola Tesla envisions a wirelessly interconnected world. When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain. In March 1989 TimBerners-Lee wrote a proposal to develop a radical new way of linking and sharing information: the World Wide Web. The first website at CERN - and in the world - was hosted on Berners-Lee s NeXT computer. In a 1999 presentation, Procter & Gamble employee Kevin Ashton used the phrase Internet of Things to link RFID technology to the Internet. He is known for inventing the term The Internet of Things to describe a system where the Internet is connected to the physical world via ubiquitous sensors. In 2000 LG announces it s first Internet refrigerator plans. In 2011 Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) launches, which provides 2128 unique Internet addresses, or addresses, which corresponds to over unique addresses per square millimeters of Earth surface. We could assign an IPV6 address to every atom on the surface of the earth, and still have enough addresses left to do another 100+ earths. IoT Presstour Page
25 I O T M A R K E T P O T E N T I A L Forecasts _ 50 billion things by 2020 connected to the internet (Cisco) How big is the Internet of Things? In CY12, there were roughly 8-10 billion internet-connected devices globally mostly Smartphones, PCs, Tablets and Networking Equipment. _ Piper Jaffray estimates there will be 23.7 billion connected devices _ IDC forecasts 212 billion connected to networks by 2020 _ 750 million buildings connected to networks _ According to Gartner there will be nearly 26 billion devices on the Internet of Things by 2020 What type of devices? _ Sensors and actuators in homes, buildings, factories, cars, health monitors, medical _ Digital pills _ Identification tags _ Sensors in wearables _ According to ABI Research more than 30 billion devices will be wirelessly connected to the Internet of Things by 2020 IoT Presstour Page
