1 WSC DIESEL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM REVIEW: FALL 2012 The career opportunities for students graduating from the Williston State College Diesel Technology Program are overwhelming. The demand for graduating students is extremely high where ever the students want to work, locally, statewide, countrywide, and worldwide. The students can go to work in the agricultural, industrial, mining, oilfield, trucking, construction, private repair shops, and some students run a business of their own. The students interest ranges from high school graduates to older than average students. As of the Fall of 2009 the employment rate around the area is very good and a lot of people are presently working, so enrollment in the program is down, but the demand for diesel technicians is still very high, most companies are hiring students with a 2-year degree from an institution like WSC, not just anybody off the street. There are a few companies that WSC Diesel Technology Program is working with to do customized training now and for them in the near future. The community benefit/economic impact is very good. You always hear about graduating students leaving from other educational programs leaving the immediate area or North Dakota as a whole, there is no reason to leave the area of the state to find good paying, good benefits, steady work for diesel technicians because the JOBS are here NOW!! The instructor also talks to the employer of all graduating students from the program to see how the student is performing for them, also to see if the instructor should make changes to the program to improve the program.

6 2.1C ANALYSIS: Student Orientated Goals: 95% of the program major students have met the certification standard for those courses that have consensus standards. Program Assessment Goals: A. Student satisfaction with the program has been high using the standards on the evaluation form, B. Upon NATEF certification, the program is now CERTIFIED and will be certified for 5 years. C. Employment of completers of the program is extremely high. Direct conversations with the present employers of the completers indicate the program graduates are obtaining the desirable education. 3.0 STUDENT ENROLLMENT DATA: 1. Trends and Barriers: As of the year 2011 the Energy Job Opportunities have been very great and the student enrollment has decreased, because most of the prospective students are going to work in Energy related occupations making a lot of money and not looking to continue their education after graduating from high school, the Diesel Technology Faculty have been talking to prospective students encouraging them to finish their education and then go out in to the workforce, reason being if the energy related job opportunities should ever decrease, with their education being obtained here at WSC they are going to retain the better jobs and advance further in their companies faster. 2. Action Plan & Strategy: The WSC Diesel Faculty will continue to meet with prospective students at area and local educational facilities. The WSC Diesel Faculty will continue to talk with energy related job employers encouraging them to utilize WSC Diesel Program for future training for their technicians, long term or short term, depending upon their specific business needs. B. As of right now the Full-time faculty is adequate to meet the program needs, but if the Lab space is Increased, the program will need to employ at least one more full-time faculty. The student/faculty ratio is mandated by NATEF Certification which is 14 students per instructor max. The faculty needs to stay current with technology, so the faculty attends factory sponsored training which is provided by Professional Development Funds on campus.
