Integrating GIS-Based Videolog and Asset Data With Commonly Used Systems Provides Major Benefits With Minimal Effort Presented By: Debbie Burns, GIS Manager Michael Nieminen, Project Manager
Introduction Management systems are most effective when they are populated with useful, easy to access data and images, as well as location and attribute data to provide a true picture. GIS provides the ability to query, report and perform statistical analysis while also providing the benefit of visualization and geographic analysis that is uniquely offered by maps.
Introduction GIS technology allows you to analyze data by location thus revealing hidden patterns, relationships and trends. Once populated, a management system coupled with a GIS can be a powerful tool for querying, reporting and managing assets.
Roadware Group Inc. Established 1969 Paris, Ontario Specialized experience in Infrastructure and Pavement management technology Largest automated data collector in North America Design, build, support, and operate ARAN
Roadware Group Inc. Data collection Videolog Pavement condition Asset inventory Bridge under-clearances Road geometry All data is LRS and GIS-referenced Support for all common GIS formats Support for custom systems
Let s talk about Integrating GIS-based videolog, pavement condition and asset data with commonly used systems to provide highly accessible and powerful solutions. Integrating data with existing systems or with systems currently being developed. Explore specific examples including Hansen, ESRI s ArcView, Intergraph s GeoMedia, and GeoDecisions Inform, based on four distinct project case studies.
Case Studies Will Include: Georgia DOT - Transportation Explorer City of Hamilton - Hansen/GeoMedia Delaware DOT GeoDecisions/Inform Pennsylvania DOT GeoDecisions/iVidLog
Case Study #1 Georgia DOT Transportation Explorer
Georgia DOT Digital roadway images (videolog) can be integrated with: High accuracy GPS and linear referencing Pavement condition data (roughness, distress) Road geometric data Asset inventories Signs Guardrails Bridges
Georgia DOT GDOT s Transportation Explorer (TREX) fast and easy access to many data sets within a single web interface. Bridges GDOT facilities Traffic interruptions Traffic count stations Crashes Traffic cameras Permits Videolog 36,000 miles
Georgia DOT VisiWeb Web-based videolog application Synchronized roadway data and digital images Efficient deployment to all users within an agency Easily launched to specific section by external programs Successfully integrated with GDOT s agency-wide TREX program. TREX users anywhere within GDOT select road sections from a map and open panoramic videolog images corresponding to that segment.
Using pull-down menus, users can select to see Videolog records.
In this example, the application retrieved Videolog records in Cobb County on State Route , also known as Interstate 75.
Users can click the icon to launch the VisiWeb application.
VisiWeb automatically displays images for the selected segment.
Alternatively, users can map out areas of Videolog coverage and select records using the map toolbar.
Georgia DOT The combination of videolog with GDOT s existing application has proven very popular with users. Requests have already come in to put the videolog application on the internet for use by the general public.
Case Study #2 The City of Hamilton Hansen/GeoMedia
City of Hamilton - Hansen/GeoMedia When the City of Hamilton's Asset Management Department undertook to compile an asset inventory, Roadware was selected as the vendor of choice. Roadware inventoried 26,000 signs and 34,000 catch basins as well as videolog throughout the City s 3,600 lane miles. All asset information was loaded into the City's Hansen Asset Management module. Roadware also provided a video log of the surveyed area along with VisiData (for their internal use) and VisiWeb (external web based) viewing software.
Asset Attributes Collected Signs GPS position Sign dimensions (width, height) Digital image of each sign MUTCD code, sign category, sign text Curb present? (Y, N) Side of road sign is on (Left, Right, Overhead) Illumination device attached? (Y, N) Multiple signs on same post? (Y, N) Catch basins GPS position Digital image of each catch basin Catch basin type (Single, Double) Grate type (selection from list provided by the City)
City of Hamilton - Hansen/GeoMedia Linking asset data and images in Hansen to Intergraph s GeoMedia GIS software has provided City representatives with valuable tools to answer questions from customers, Council and management. City staff can track customer complaints (service requests and work orders) related to individual assets, while providing management with the ability to quickly view reports outlining accomplishments and costs as well as information regarding their assets -- either visually or in report formats.
Inventory 26,000+ Signs
Queries
Hansen Service Request
Asset Information from Hansen to GIS
Hansen Service Requests QUERY: Catch Basins with outstanding service requests that are located on major roads
City of Hamilton - Hansen/GeoMedia The City of Hamilton received InfraGuide s National Award of Excellence for leadership and innovation in municipal infrastructure management, utilizing InfraGuide s principles and guidelines for infrastructure sustainability. Hamilton has often been recognized as a forwardthinking leader in the area of asset management, and has developed a reputation as one of the leading municipalities in this field.
Case Study #3 Delaware DOT GeoDecisions
Delaware DOT GeoDecisions Linking videolog and pavement data with GeoDecisions INFORM web-based GIS software Plots road roughness (IRI) on a map for highlevel condition overview
Delaware DOT GeoDecisions Provides link to panoramic videolog images collected at 26.4 ft (8 m) intervals.
Delaware DOT GeoDecisions All data was delivered in a compatible format for easy import into INFORM. Data was referenced to Delaware s segmentation and to GIS.
Case Study #4 Pennsylvania DOT GeoDecisions
Pennsylvania DOT ividlog Roadware has been collecting videolog and pavement condition data for Penn DOT for over 10 years. GeoDecisions developed a web-based viewer (ividlog) to allow digital images to be streamed over the internet.

Pennsylvania DOT ividlog Penn DOT s system is being widely used throughout the state by DOT personnel and the general public. New data and images collected this year will refresh the system.
Final thought Data doesn t have to sit on a shelf. Videolog, pavement condition, and asset data are easily integrated with GIS systems, allowing agencies to manage their infrastructure needs effectively as they grow and change over time. Roadware s goal: To provide relevant data and make it easy for our clients to use.
