Information Leaflet for parents Bone Anchored Hearing Aid Programme (BAHA) & Facial Prosthetics (FAITEC) This Information Leaflet is available in Large Print and on Computer Disk (it is also available in Braille, Other Languages and on Audio Tape on request). Please contact the Child & Family Information Centre on Revised September 2003
Bone Anchored Hearing Aid Programme Your child has been referred to our service as they may be helped by having a Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA) and/or a facial prosthesis (artificial replacement). A group of staff from different teams work together to provide this service. You and your child will meet members of that team, and this leaflet helps to introduce them to you. Consultant ENT Surgeons, Tel: /8114 We will meet you and your child to explain the underlying problem and to talk about treatment. We will be responsible for and carry out any surgery that is needed, and will follow up your child for as long as necessary. We also have an adult practice at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and will continue there after the age of 16. ENT Advanced Nurse Practitioner,..... Tel:
I will support you and your child before, during, and after the admission to hospital. I will also tell you about how to look after the abutment site after the operation. Audiologist,... Tel: Along with the rest of the Audiology team, I will assess the hearing levels and provide information and support about the BAHA (Bone Anchored Hearing Aid). I will see you throughout the assessment process and for regular reviews once the BAHA has been fitted. Speech and Language Therapist,.... Tel: I will assess your child's speech, language and communication skills, before and after the BAHA is fitted. I will provide treatment if required and refer to local agencies. I am also able to provide advice on your child's feeding if you are worried about this.
Maxillofacial Prosthesist,... Tel: Some children who have hearing problems have been born with problems with their external ears. I provide advice to those children and their parents on the treatment options available, and I make prosthetic ears. Secretaries,... Tel: /8114 We will co-ordinate any outpatient appointments with the team. We will also arrange any hospital admissions your child may need. Other associated members of the team You may also see staff from Clinical Genetics in the clinic. From time to time we also have students with us, please tell us if you do not wish a student to be in the clinic when we are discussing your child's case. You may also be referred to other clinical teams, such as the Craniofacial Team, or the Cleft Palate Team.
What can you expect from the team? Your child will attend at least one clinic where you will meet most of the team. The assessment procedure for a Bone Anchored Hearing Aid will take place through a number of appointments at Birmingham Children's Hospital If your child is having a Prosthetic Ear made, this will be done at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Edgbaston, Birmingham. You will be able to spend time with the medical and nursing staff to discuss any surgical procedures and preadmission details. You are welcome to take your child to visit the ward. You will have an opportunity to meet another child and family who have had a BAHA and/or prosthetic ear. We will make every effort to be in contact with your child's local service.
Please use this space to write down any notes or questions you might have
Data Protection Act 1998 We collect information about your child and family relevant to what is causing their health problem and the treatment they need. We store it in their written records and on computer. Sometimes we may need to share your information with other people and organisations. If you have any questions please speak to the person looking after your child or contact the PALS Officer (Patient Advice and Liaison Service). Further Information If you require further information, please contact a member of the team or the Child and Family Information Centre. Internet access is also available in the information Centre.
