3 What is a Key Worker? A Key Worker is a person who takes a key role in coordinating a patient s care and promoting continuity for example, making sure the patient and family know who to contact for information and advice. For most patients with lung cancer or mesothelioma the specialist nurse is your Key Worker. However, this may change over time as your needs change. If you have any questions about the Key Worker role please contact the specialist nursing team. What is the Specialist Nursing Team? The specialist nurses consist of Advanced Nurse Practitioners and a Specialist Nurse Practitioner who are qualified nurses with specialist training and experience in lung cancer and mesothelioma. The team includes Melanie Rogers, Hannah Ball and Charlie Buckle. For surgical patients Jenny Mitchell is also an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in lung cancer surgery and surgical follow up care. We are there to support you and your family and carers. We work as part of the Multi-Disciplinary Team, offering advice and support to lung cancer and mesothelioma patients at any stage of their illness. page 3
4 What can the Specialist Nursing Team offer me? Emotional support in dealing with diagnosis and the future. Information and advice about lung cancer and mesothelioma. Information about treatments for lung cancer and mesothelioma. Advice about symptoms, treatment side effects and their management. Someone to talk to about feelings, worries, concerns and problems. Coordinate your care by being a link with other staff and services concerned or involved with your care, now and in the future, including relevant advice on whom to contact if needed. Basic benefits advice and put you in touch with dedicated benefits advisors. To act as your Key Worker at appropriate times in your care. page 4
5 How to contact the Specialist Nursing Team We provide a service to patients throughout the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust (Churchill Hospital, John Radcliffe Hospital, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Horton Hospital) but are based at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford. We can be contacted by telephone on: Tel: , Monday to Friday 9am - 4:30pm. On this number there is a confidential answerphone to receive messages if we are out of the office, in clinic, or elsewhere in the hospitals seeing patients. During these hours we also carry a bleep. The bleep can be contacted by phoning the hospital switchboard on: Please ask the switchboard to bleep us either by name or by bleep number For general questions we are also contactable by [email protected] This account may not be accessed every day and should not be used for urgent advice. For surgical patients, Jenny Mitchell is based at the John Radcliffe Hospital and is contactable between the hours of 8am to 4pm. Telephone: or bleep 1184 via the hospital switchboard. The specialist nursing team are not an emergency service. If you need urgent help, advice or support please contact your GP / on-call GP or emergency services. It aims to improve the quality of care for patients with lung cancer and mesothelioma, supporting patient welfare and education. The support fund helps us achieve this in several ways: Ensuring patients have access to quality, free, information. Provide funding for the development of support groups. Provide funding to develop holistic patient care. Purchasing equipment for patient care, e.g., nebulizers (when not provided by the NHS). Education and training for the specialist nursing team (when not accessible through the NHS). If you would like further information about this fund, or how to donate, please contact Dr Alastair Moore (Lead Lung Cancer Clinician) on or one of the Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma Specialist Nurses. page 7
